Love the discussion guys, really good reading...

Just on the 2 Grubby's topic, anyone who underrates these guys will do so at their peril.. Individually, I agree with Footymad, Leigh when on his game is, to me, one of the 3 best on ballers in the competition, he has consistency that not many others can display and an underrated level of courage. While Mark is still rated by many, myself included as one of the top 5 players in the competition when firing. :thumbsu:

Would like to know the other 2 onballers that you rate..

I rate everyone that plays onball Billy... Just have 3 that I think are the best onballers in the league... :D

At this stage of the season my top five players are:

1. Lee James
2. Matt Robertson
3. Mick Lacy
4. Ryan Connellan
5. Brian Wheelahan

Please note that I have yet to see Diggers Rest, Riddell or Macedon play.

Think we were talking about onballers???

And the reason for each player please Matt. (seriously)

Lee James - only needs the ball to come in his vicinity to be a genuine threat up forward. Kicks straight and although I hear his "specky" game has faded slightly, still has to be the premier full-forward in this comp.

Matt Robertson - he's a tall midfielder who can play both ends of the ground with terrific success. Has an enormous engine and reads the play exceptionally well. Although he has a tendency to just boot the ball forward from the backline and stoppages, he can kick them 55-60 metres. Would fill a lot of holes in any club's side.

Mick Lacy and Ryan Connellan - as ruck/forwards, Lacy and Connellan are the best in the competition at getting the job done on a weekly basis. They give their sides confidence to kick to a contested area because they know these two blokes have terrific dukes and can kick the ball a mile. Although Connellan is more of a "thump" ruckman, the Redbacks still win a lot of clearances through his good work. The Hawks look a much better team with Lacy in it, and if Matt Stacey ever returns, I think they'll be a genuine threat to the Bombers.

Brian Wheelahan - I'm basing it on one game this season, and I know it was only against Kilmore, but this little fella did it all in round one. Melton Central hadn't beaten the Blues at J.J. Clancy Reserve for 10 years. They did so because of Wheelahan. He can play as a full-forward, midfielder, winger, back-flanker. His skills are sublime and he reads the play exceptionally. For his size, he is an exceptional footballer.

As if you wouldn't want to see Lee James play as a midfielder :D

I saw Jamesy start in the ruck 2 years ago in a game, think it might have even been a final against Diggers and he jumped over the opposition ruckman, as soon as that contest finished he was back at FF though.. The amount of ball Jamesy gets as a forward would see him wasted as a midfielder, and take away the crowd's entertainment...

The best 5 midfielders I believe, not in order (Leaving out the Kangas)

Adam Kearney (Romsey) - Big strong midfielder
Brian Wheelahan (Centrals) - Pure class
Justin Belleville (Riddell) - With the recruits everyone has forgotten him, still the best midfielder at Riddell. Think you even named him as interchange yes Matt?
James Climas (Riddell) - Always where the ball is at stoppages.
Adam Johnstone (WH) - Quality leader, quality ball winner.

Haven't seen Sam Young and Sipthorpe played mostly forward on the weekend.

Seeings that you have not seen riddell play this year i guess u are saying lee is the best player at the moment going by stats?
Im not saying lee is not a great player but he does have the best midfield in the comp feeding him the ball, climas, robertson, young, belleville, blade etc.
Im sure there would be a couple of forwards in this league who would love to get the ball delivered by these guys and i am positive there numbers would go up, not saying lee james numbers but they would be up.
I wont have a go at a top 5 because i havnt seen many games but i did see riddell first hand at the weekend.
I know its your opinion matt and thats fine, just thought i would give my opinion on what i think.

17th of May IMS - Sam Young will be in your top 5. Exceptional talant. Belleville is very good but has lost the number 1 spot at Riddell.

You watched him kick a lazy 9 goals with doubts on his fitness and there is question mark on him being one of the premier players in the comp?

Nothing between James and Sippy as the 2 best for me.

I actually never questioned him being ONE of the premier players, i questioned wether he was number one going by stats.
Plenty of other great players that dont kick goals.

Can you put some names down? If your desputing he is number one then this is what this forum is for. You can even name yourself.

I put him equal 1 and I am not just going by stats.

Smartest thing you've said for a while Kingy. These 2 when fully fit (even 3/4 fit in Sippy's case) are ahead of an emerging pack of very good footballers. No doubt the comp has continued to improve every year for the last 6-7 years. The group inc Belleville, Sims, Lacey, Dettman, Donovan, Dawson etc are also very good footballers who would play seniors at most levels other than VFL and above. The depth of all teams is what is making our comp continually stronger though.

No alias here, my name is Steven Davis, I used to play in this league 15 years ago and have a step son that does now.

Just my opinion, no cheap shots just an opinion. Its sad if you cant get on here and have an opinion with out cheap shots flying at your....

no offence intended no need to get personal guys. I just think looking at other players on list that are ahead of them both. It will be interseting to see how they go up against Riddell then I guess

I wasn't at that game, so he can keep his anzac day medal lol

Credit where credit is due. Good on ya pal for declaring your name and clarifying your position. An opinion can never be wrong!

I actually have very little doubt KA.. Is he playing on ball though or on a wing?

hey pickles just wondering if your west team you named is the actuall team, or is the one on the rdfl website the real one. was asking coz my name is on yours but not the website!
cheers

Footy foes fight for the club

GET set for an engrossing encounter between Wyndhamvale Falcons defender Ashley Fletcher and Rockbank Rams key position player Brent Henry in the ring in Rumble in the Jungle 11 at Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre on June 27.

The much-anticipated footy fight is expected to attract hundreds of fans from the Western Region Football League and Riddell District Football League given the clubs' recent history with each other.

Several Falcons have flocked to the Rams in the past season including former coach Brett Cook, who was sacked by the Falcons mid-season last year.

The Falcons and the Rams are also cellar-dwellers of their respective leagues, both sitting at the bottom of their league's ladder and struggling financially.

It is understood both teams were scrounging for every dollar in the lead-up to this season.

Fletcher and Henry are looking to raise money for their clubs.

"It's a bit of fun. Hopefully, the fans will get down there and raise a bit of money for the club. We're both low in the leagues so we've got to do something for the club,'' Fletcher said.

Fletcher, 20, has the eyes of someone who is not a person to back down.

Henry, 21, has a proven record on the field, reinforcing that he is a wild man for the Rams.

"Over the past four years I've been suspended for about 18 weeks. I decide to take some anger out when I probably shouldn't,'' Henry said.

The two local football identities will train once a week at Team Ultimate Kickboxing Gym.

Fletcher said he was hoping to make the fight more exciting than watching the Falcons.

"We've been losing by over 100 points every week. It's hard but all the boys down there are top blokes.

"Half the teams in the league are just too good.''

Rumble in the Jungle 11 also features Mark French defending his Australian title, the return of Andre Meunier, Cuong Tran and Matt Samartzis, and Wyndham's female kickboxers.

He is an on baller - if he comes off the wing at times he will still follow the ball. If you love your old fashion tough in and under footballers he will be high on your list. The grubs and sam out in the open chasing a loose ball would be a super clash.

As above the good players coming into the league is a great result. I watched a lot of Gis and Sunbury last year and I watch the good RDFL players to see if they would play at that level. Watching this year there are more than I thought.

Back to Mark Mc - would play in the midfield at in both clubs - gun!

Thats why I asked about the BOG in the granny over the last few years. Good coaches put circles around the players that have played at a higher level - these are the ones that will win a grand final for you. No matter how old or broken they maybe.

Matt's team is just his idea of a team Burger.. The list on the website is the selected squads.

Fully agree with this statement.

Maybe after round 10 when i have seen everyone play, at the moment would be very biased as i have only seen a couple of teams play, but Sam Young was unbelievable on saturday when he wants it, he gets it, which is pretty much most of the game.
Jeremy Jose would have to be up there in the top couple, imagine if he had of played more than 3 years of footy.
Sipthorpe would be 1 or 2 can play anywhere and does it easily.
lee would be up there because i never doubted he was a very good footballer and after 9.9 on the weekend i would be losing the plot if i didnt think that.

He has been playing on the wing, half back, half forward plus had stints on ball.
On Saturday he even played as a leading forward....... a roll that I think he is just not suited to.
Id'e play him on ball every time, the bloke just oozes midfielder.
Hard at it, in & under ball winner who never ever wastes a kick by turning it over.
Seems like a really nice Clubman too, has been an outstanding acquisition & an ever increasing asset to the Club.
