While we are on the Bowen Medal topic, I might as well bring up a pet peeve of mine.

The reserves best and fairest should not be called the Scarborough Medal. I bring this up every year and with due respect to Matt Martin and other recent winners, they should not be placed in the same category as the likes of Marty Lakey, who won it when it was the senior best and fairest in the second division of the RDFL.

Past Scarborough medalists should also be recognised as elite players of the RDFL, as often the best player in the entire competition was in second division. Once again I'll use Lakey as an example.

Maybe it's too late, but I'm a massive fan of history and I just think we are recording history pretty poorly at the moment. When someone goes to do a book on 200 years of football in the Riddell District, they'll look at old newspapers, RDFL annual reports etc to gather their info. We must get it right now before it is too late.

I hate to say I told you so, but this is what was published in the April 4 edition of The Free Press this year, and also on BigFooty.

Tigers look solid

by Matt Nicholls

LANCEFIELD footballers kicked off their 2008 campaign in style last Saturday, winning their practice match against Newlyn with ease.
In excellent conditions at Lancefield Park, a relatively new-look Tigers outfit was full of running, aided by the ruckwork of new recruit Tom Waters, who dominated the hitouts.
The lanky 21-year-old from Bulleen Templestowe in the VAFA was simply too good for his Newlyn counterparts, and was instrumental in Lancefield kicking six unanswered goals in the opening quarter.
His ability to dominate and ruck all game allows the Tigers to play club stalwart Phil Conway on a wing or in a key position, which effectively means two new recruits for the club.
Midfielders Chris Collins, Simon Choate and Jay Shewan showed their class through the centre, while up forward, Scott Smithwick and recruit John Baker (Romsey) both looked potent in front of goal.
Rick Dowling (Woodend-Hesket) enjoyed his first hit out since the Hawks dropped him on the eve of the finals last year, but appeared rusty.
The small forward kicked 42 goals last season, but was controversially axed from the side for the finals series, with Woodend-Hesket coach Mick Giddings favouring youngster Daniel Salpietro for the pocket role.
In what was a brilliant day for the Lancefield Football Club, all three sides were victorious.
The reserves held off Newlyn in the senior curtain raiser, while the Tigers’ Under 18 side defeated Woodend-Hesket in the morning.
With a handful of senior players still to come into the side, Lancefield’s season appears to be promising.
Although Newlyn, who compete in the Central Highlands Football League, are probably not as strong as most of the RDFL sides, it was a great opportunity for the Tigers to dust off the cobwebs and gain some much needed confidence before round one.
They will play Romsey in the season opener, next Sunday at Romsey on April 13.
For a full season preview, see next week’s Free Press.

Next big thing: Lancefield recruit Tom Waters dominated in the ruck against Newlyn on Saturday.

Great call Matt, I played with Marty that year and he was outstanding, definately the dominant player in our division and probably both (1st and 2nd division). Great to see another Tiger player win the league b&f.

I think you will find that most medals are named in honour of somebody and that would be the reason in continuing that honour as naming the reserves the scarborough, it was done years ago and what is done is done. Too late to do something about it now. Bowen was the first div and Scar.. for the second div, maybe they could have named the runner up the scar.. or it could have been left in second div that no longer exists and faded away into history. So many people would have had an opinion on it and a decision was made. You could look at the side and say that people that won a bowen could say that that is tainted as the league is not near the strength it was. but it is all blah, blah at the end of the day
I do tend to agree with you about the scarborough, but i won't lose any sleep over it.

This is a match I would love to see:
Lancefield's 1996 premiership side versus Riddell's 2008 premiership side

RIDDELL
B: N. Ash, B. Allen, P. Murden.
HB: M. Peatling, J. Allen, R. Leitch.
C: P. Robertson, S. Young, T. McDonald.
HF: A. Blade, J. Petran, L. Harrison.
F: M. Allen, L. James, C. Meacham.
R: G. Robertson, J. Belleville, J. Climas.
I: M. Burnett, D. Besanko.
Coach: Darrin Rowsell.
Captain: Jason Allen.

LANCEFIELD

B: J. Pattinson, B. Ryan, P. Connors.
HB: G. Connell, C. Ryan, M. Graham.
C: D. McKinley, R. Draper, B. Catherall.
HF: A. Reaper, R. O'Meara, D. Choate.
F: S. Choate, D. O'Meara, P. Rose.
R: T. Fisher, M. Lakey, P. O'Meara.
I: W. Kraus, M. Hare.
Coach: Marty Lakey
Captain: Mick Graham

I can see some similarities. I'll be dreaming of the O'Meara boys jumping all over the Allen boys tonight. Could see Slugga kicking a bag too. Even Lakey versus Young has me licking my lips!

Obviously a very strong side with good players that escape me not being chosen? Who decided this outfit?

All the coaches submitted their best 22 without any of their own players, and from my understanding a selection committee comprising All-Star coaches Nick Hannett and Shane Geddes selected the final team.

I wouldn't have had King or Mainey in that side, no offence to either of those players, but they tried to do the "right thing" by getting someone from each club in the team.

Personally, Belleville, Welsh, Bowen, Micky Allen, Bladey, or Brayden Allen could all feel a little unlucky.

i think if the panel that picked that team were playing for sheep stations it would be a different side. if they're not going to be fair dinkum about it, why do it at all?

you could probably argue with petran, wheelehan, connelan, cornish as well

Petran only played his best footy late in the season, Wheels missed too many games, Connellan was a little bit stiff but perhaps not as good as Jose and Waters, and Cornish was okay, but nowhere near as good as Dowling, Allen etc.

Congratulations to Tom Waters of Lancefield on winning this years Bowen Medal.
Runners up were Riddell Pair Justin Belleville & Sam Young.

& Many thanks to Sunbury Kangas for their cordial hospitality, much appreciated fellas. :thumbsu:

didn't you get a ticket from riddell? or are the kangaroos trying to recruit james through you?;)

Geez there were some out there get ups running around. Didn't know braces were back in fashion, white boots should be outlawed, there's no point mentioning Arnel's red suit... everyone has the same thought. He did say though that only a black man could pull it off and I would have to agree. Anyone else would have copped a Bristle barrage! There was some gorgeous ladies running around... going to have to watch more of the netball!

Obviously for the boys in the Navy Blue, last night was an excellent night!

Congrats to Sheeds Martin on winning the Reserves B&F. Well deserved. Might not have his kicking boots on week by week but is one of the toughest running around. Im sure chops martin is very proud. Well done to Bushy as well, finishing runner up and also receiving the Buffalo Award. With Rick Scott winning the goal kicking by one goal, it rounded out a great night for the reserves... too bad they got knocked out of the finals by a very good outfit.

Well done to Tara Crisp and Erin Jenkins for getting into the team of the year in B & A grade respectively and Bully & Chuggy on getting into the team of the year. Don't know what you think gents, I thought receiving a jumper for team of the year was an awesome concept. I used to get the jumpers and have them framed and present them at our presentation night for the players. I was a little disappointed that they didn't get them this year. Does anyone know why they didn't?

And to finish off, well done to Steve Turner, a man that wears his heart on his sleeve and is very passionate about the RDFL. I've been lucky enough to know Steve for a few years now and know how much hard work he has done for this league. I was very proud of what the league did for him last night. A passionate Centrals supporter, he has given me plenty of advice in times of need at the club. There is no doubt that clubs are circling for his experience but I hope that he can have a role at our club (even if it's still the advice). If not, I know he'll be in the Navy Blue Army in 09. Great Man!

Great crowd, great night, great league...

the finals by a very good outfit.

I think you will find the cost factor would be a reason, remember they made jumpers and i think gave them to players in the 18s rep sides and the east west game players. The jumper was a brilliant idea for players that were unable to represent the league in an interleague. Next year that will happen, and you play in the game you have to wear something and keep it.
I couldn't make the night, what were players given instead of a jumper?

It was a very good side the tigers back in 1996.... But please remember this was a divi 2 club ... this era was the end of the rdfl ( In the fact) that clubs left.

The difference between Division 1 and Division 2 was mind blowing and about ($60K)

The only club to win divi 2 then go up and win the next 2 years in divi 1 was Riddle 1992-1994 the 3 years later they went into recess.

Diggers was a strong divi 2 Club, 4 GF's apperences in a row finaly winnig in 1994 - next 3 years in divi 1 prob winning 6 games all up.

So 2 divi was not a strong leauge ( IMO ).

Fair point, but I think Lancefield's side back then would easily beat the one they have now. As would Riddell's. Country footy all across Victoria has dropped off from the halcyon days in the 70s, 80s and 90s. I still think Lancefield on 96 would go close to Riddells side today.

Have heard although plenty of footy to be played in 2008 that there will be a number of players with high profiles leaving next year. According to mail at least two players from each club reportedly leaving next year already.

I'm sure there would be a few clubs out there that would like to see Riddell lose more than 2

T.Mac from Riddell is finishing up this year and going to America to become a professional pie eater and try and become reigning champ of the world.
Go live your dream T.Mac
