its not woodends fault for starting the abuse, its not riddells fault for confronting woodend about it, its not the players fault for jumping the fence, its definately not the leagues fault, its security, security, security! fair to say that they were hired to prevent this and they didnt! safe environment for all... i went to an amatuer grand final two years ago, rocked up in a car with a bunch of blokes and they asked us to get out of the car to check for alcohol. then when we were at one end and the teams supporters started getting vocal, we had about 6 or 8 security people making sure nothing got out of hand. thats the security you want at your games!

yes that is right. to a point. is the abuse didnt happen then the fight wouldnt happen but that aside. there was only about 6 security there for the day. 2 at the gate, 1 behind each goals and 2 walking around. not enough. and if the security near the goals had of called for back up earlier then maybe this wouldnt hav happened

Why did these players fathers go from the Riddell supporters area to where the Woodend Supporters were gathered near the goals. I dont know why they would do such a thing ,walking into a hornets nest of drunks. These players should be professional enough not to listen to the clowns and hasbeens over the fence. If the parents had stayed put this would not of happened.

They like many others go from one end to the other, to watch the Stars kick goals !

I think the security at the Finals are more concerned about people getting into the ground without paying.Security tipping out Bottled grog that was smuggled into the ground is not a hard enough line. The people drinking the smuggled in booze should have been evicted from the ground

It was him, no it wasn't it was him.
Sure it wasn't her, no i saw that bloke over there do it
nah i thought it was the bald bloke with him, are you sure it wasn't the red head kid that ran off the other way.
Might have been, but the boundary umpire looked at him funny and ran off, maybe it was the old lady in the car next to them that tooted her horn.

Who actually started it is irrelevant to us here, only the league if this incident is being investigated.

If somebody wants to mouth off excessively expect a punch in the head.
Were these people wearing woodend colors? Was anybody removed from the reserve?
Who was at fault?
1. The League - let them in the gate
2. Security - didn't check for grog properly on entrance, didn't intervene or try to calm the blokes abusing.
3. Woodend Football Club - always known this group to be abusive, should they have gone and intervened and told them they are not welcome to support their club if they want to behave in a manner, especially wearing the club colors.
4. Riddell football Club - for not seeing there supporters move around to try and quieten them down a little with a bit of presence
5. Romsey football club - just because they hosted the day
6. The AFL - because it is a game that gets the blood pumping even just watching it

I would say maybe 2 of the above. It is a damn shame that there are so many di*,#eads out there that have to ruin everything for everybody, We all need to start taking some more responsibility in order to clean out the rif raf.
It is one thing to get pissed with your mates have a bit of fun and act like idiots, but never a reason to get personal, abusive or violent, at the end of the day it's sport, it's meant to be fun.

bang!

Looks like the National Guard might be employed at Lancefield on Saturday and zero tolerance might create a pretty sombre atmosphere.

I've been going to grand finals at Lancefield for 30 years and I cannot remember any that had a sombre atmosphere, it's the grand final after all and the two best sides are playing. Should be a cracker.

i'm sure riddell will do everything possible to have these 2 guys playing on the weekend. they will probably bring in that guy that some of the afl clubs used to use and get the hearing delayed or whatever he can do to get it deferred.

Finlay - Sunbury Lions have used him in the past for Grand Finals.

Suprised no one else has mentioned Bellville being out this week, as posted by Kings Army. This is huge news!

I had this confirmed not long ago.

---------------

I am a Woodend supporter and make the following comments:

He said she said…. who really cares its history, for the league and clubs involved the following should happen for the longevity of the league:

The players that jumped the fence
Any player that jumped the fence should be suspended – if a decision was made to stick up for you family and that’s what was chose then you will be happy to deal with the consequences. You can’t expect families to visit the football if it’s ok for player to jump the fence and get into fights, no matter what the motivation.

Woodend
If there were Woodend officials or players in the fight or breaking any RDFL rules then the Woodend Football club should suspended them, if that means you are a 2’s player and you miss the game this week stiff…… its about setting a standard

Riddle
They should do the same as Woodend above.

The league
Its simple – they need to create an environment and atmosphere where people fee safe

This is an opportunity for clubs and the league to show their true colours.

Thanks KA. yes thats who i was thinking of. How did he go with Sunbury's cases?

He won the 2 cases he took to the VCFL. Very expensive however. Sunbury have a lot more cash to do something like this. Also it would be extremely hard to get both players off. The only chance would be to get it adjourned until after the Grand Final - then if they both got 10 weeks they would not care.

With 3 players out the game opens up. Power might have to come out of retirment to make up the numbers.

You would know Kings wouldn't you? If the players can get the case adjourned like you mentioned and Power comes in to replace Belleville, not to forget Ash didn't play last week either then Riddell would be nearly at full strength again wouldn't they?

The only slim chance of Power playing is if all 3 miss. No chance if the 2 play. But again I would be amazed if riddell were prepared to spend thousands for Finaly.

What have the RDFL actually charged the players with? And potentially what could they face? Much as I disagree with their actions its a pity it happened.

Then dont contribute by posting more of it !

I arrived at 9.30am & was there all day, I was parked right next to your Woodend supporters... & I use the term very loosely. They arrived much later.
A number of them were Woodend reserves players. (Fact)
Most of them were drinking. (Fact)
Most of them got blind drunk as the day progressed. (Fact)
Then a number of them became abusive. (Fact)
Many supporters, Like me of a number of different teams near by. (Fact)
The Woodend Supporters actions started the incident........ IMO
They were a disgrace........ IMO
They left a shit load of Rubbish behind, ie Their BYO empties. (Fact)
Now the rest is history !
For players to be abused over the fence is not uncommon in any grade of senior football , and I'm sure the players put up with it most weeks , but on the weekend it went way past what you could call in the spirit of the game or for that matter common decency in any walk of life.(except possibly in woodend.) People that make comments like those that came from the woodend supporters on the weekend don't deserve to be apart of the rdfl community or any community for that matter .Maybe woodend should swap jumpers with wallan to complete the picture.

If those Woodend Supporters were so bad then I agree but that club has plenty of supporters who don't behave like that.I find it perplexing that some of the posts direct such vitriol towards that club which seems well run and for the most part well behaved. In addition if you apply your standard to all clubs, every club has its wallys who wouldn't be welcome at the footy. Woodend blokes were criticised for their behaviour at Kilmore but a mate and I were standing behind the Woodend coaches box on that day and I can tell you honestly, that after having been around a bit, what they copped back from some opposition supporters made my hair curl. They probably asked for it but the point is that every club's got ém. Let's just make sure we don't incite more violence and encourage the young blokes to act with more restraint and to figure out the difference between witty barbs and outright personal abuse.

Some thoughts on the current topical issue

Woodend supporters are notoriously hard markers on opposition players and give plenty of verbal to the opposition. But they are no worse than Sunbury, Diggers, Riddell, Wallan and any number of RDFL clubs or clubs in other leagues. It probably stands out at finals time more because there are more supporters watching and not all of them are true supporters but are there for the drinks and parties that follow games.

Riddell supporters can say they are victims but over the years there supporters verbal behaviour to opposition players has been exactly the same as what they are now complaining about.

The umpires appeared to have done what was required of them in seeing an offence and sending off as required. Who are they to know who was related or started the fight they were simply responding to what they saw which was players fighting in the crowd and did exactly as they have been instructed.

The security is in a no win situation. Would any of you go and out yourself in a situation where you can get hurt?? The league can get more security but the associated costs rise and there is no guarantee that the same situation would not happen again.

If security were to search all cars properly it would take 3 hours to get in the ground. People still get contraband into jails where they have electronic and physical security so it isn't to hard to get a bottle or three into any RDFL ground.

Maybe the RDFL needs to set up dry areas behind the goals, in front of social and changerooms, and around the coaches boxes and have security police those areas to keep drinkers out. It does put all the drunks in one area of the ground but at least people who want to watch footy in safety and the young kids who want to stand behind the goals can do so safely knowing they will not be exposed to drunken idiots.

Should these players be suspended will Riddell want to fight it outside the RDFL?? Maybe, but for the good of football and the league this incident needs to be adjudicated on by the league & Tribunal, penalties given and the whole sorry saga be put to rest. Riddell need to get on with trying to win on Saturday as much as it may hurt any players that may be suspended.

Finally whilst everyone else is trying to find someone or a group to blame, the reality is all parties involved played a part from the Woodend supporters verballing the players to the Riddell supporters who come around to front the woodend people to the players who jumped the fence.

All these people need to take a good hard look at what they did and what there actions have done to harm the image of their clubs, the league and football in general.
