Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

the money this fella is getting and what people assume lee james is getting is irrelevant.its really no-one elses business what they are getting.to command that sort of money they are obviously worth it.all the better for the rdfl to have class running around there again.
great to see the likes of wallan, kilmore and centrals excited about the season ahead.go roos

So does this mean you are staying at Roo land Deano.. After earlier reports you were leaving??

Totally agree. If I could command that type of money I'm sure I would. I understand that it's no one else business, it's just from what I've been told. If the money money is out there to be taken, take it!!! Just don't take it at the peril of the club as a whole, that's my view. Never have begrudged a bloke getting good coin if they deliver and I never will.

Harry out!!

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

gentlemen all this talk about money who really cares what a player gets paid if he is a quality LONG TERM player at your club and can bring skills and development to your junior player base.the last thing i would want to see is someone who just turns up for the cash and gives nothing back.the club might win a flag but then be out of buisness the year after because they are broke.

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

watch out for melton central recruit brendan chugg this year. he is an outstanding player. would be a real chance for the comp medal.
Would have to agree with this one. I played on Chuggy a few times in the GDFL and he is an extremely hard player to match up on. He is great in the air and can run all day as well. One way to get under his guard though is to heckle him about his blonde tips. He absolutely hates it. He can play though!!!

Matt, just wondering where you got your information about the grounds? I thought Sunbury were on recycled water? I was also lead to believe that Melton and Rockbank grounds were to be watered through council grants over the break. Obviously this isn't happening. Melton can get away with playing on the number one oval or Melton Souths but what would Rockbank do?

If the rumour Harrison and Sullivan are leaving and now with the rumour of Morgan, could Romsey be the big sliders I already predicted?

I also want to put it out to all Big Footy members, paying players... How do clubs afford it? Is it all just about getting big sponsorship dollars?

Just curious...

Well Sunbury needs a lot more than water I can tell you. That ground will need to be completely resewn. But they'll get away with it for one more season I suspect. Rockbank is screwed with no water, and they'll play home games at Diggers Rest's first or second oval until that situation is rectified. I don't think the RDFL wants Centrals to play on the adjacent oval unless they can use the rooms. It was crap last year the way they did it. Obviously not Centrals fault though. Most grounds I've seen in recent weeks and I also know people at most clubs so its a good way to find out how their grounds are shaping.

Also, on the finance question, clubs are run like businesses nowadays and sponsorship money does come into it. Fundraising is crucial still and obviously relying on locals to play for next to nothing helps keep funds down to pay for imports.

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

I wonder why they weren't allowed to use the clubrooms?? It is of course a council owned building.

I just struggle to wrap my head around the whole concept of paying big recruits. Sponsorship and fundraising are huge, I do agree. Matt, you say that clubs need to rely on their local players to play for next to nothing, wouldn't this turn local players away from their club? To compete with any club you need to recruit but to what extent? I would like to find out the opinions of players whose clubs are getting the big recruits. How do you feel about the money going to a player that might only be a short term fix?

Its a tough balance no doubt, and every club does it differently. There is no perfect way. Success breeds success, and if locals feel that they are likely to play in finals and premierships they are more likely to stay and play for nothing. I wish there was little or no money in country and metro footy, but there is, so I guess I support clubs in this area paying money to attract good players. My philosophy on a players value is that a player is worth as much as a club is willing to pay. I think the clubs who have had the best player management in recent years are Woodend, Riddell, Diggers Rest and Sunbury Kangaroos. These sides have been very consistent in recent years and have kept their playing lists very stable. If they lose players, they recruit to cover them, as well as being proactive. This year it looks as if Lancefield, Melton Central and Macedon will all recruit well, but the big question is if they have recruited well enough to get ahead of the other clubs? Something I hope they have, but suspect they have not.

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

It is a dark area, paying players. Im intrigued in clubs that pay big cashola for players and always wonder how they can do it. It is exciting to hear the stronger clubs have recruited well, picking up players that not only improve their team but also improve the league. It is also encouraging to hear that Lancefield, Melton and Macedon are recruiting well to challenge or compete with the stronger clubs. Just hope that the gap between the clubs don't widen but instead close. It is a building process for those clubs trying to close the gap I guess...

Did hear over the weekend that Romsey are moving forward and have recruited gun forward Adrian Baker nad on baller Tevita Fonua. The slide may not be imminent, just yet.

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

I was just thinking that my lame attempt at a ladder for 08 might have some significance. Looks like you have proven me wrong :)

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

Morgan in the red white and black of the Heathcote Saints. Signed sealed and delivered. Disapointing for the redbacks but very handy pickup for the saints.

Wouldn't read to much into it, has a habit of running back home before March

Never signed on the dotted line at diggers. Coach Meldrum is a good mate of Morgan. So morgan has said he is playing and he has signed and put his clearance in, he will be in the saints jumper for 2008.

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

Romsey would have to be the most disappointing side in terms of wasting the talent and opportunity.

Over the last 5 years they have had players of some extremely good talent come and go, and some excellent young kids put there hand up for the senior football. But, why is it that every year on this forum we hear players leaving to go elsewhere?

They lost one grand final back in 05, however could have been a late charge only narrowly going down to the Hawks last years final. If all these players that have left stayed perhaps you could have gone the next step, and been more successful than say 'Riddell'. Your development and recruitment for a town of Romsey's stature in the league is outstanding and to be commended, but your retention is poor to say the least.

Departures within the last 2 years:

Carrols x 2
Meldrum
Strack
Morgan
Sullivan
Harrison
Keenan
McClellan

Arrivals:
Connellan
Higgins
Edwards
and the two new recruits!

If all these guys had of stayed, perhaps you could have seen some more silverware?

You think Romsey are bad have a look at the cattery leavers;

Senior only players still in RDFL at end of 07, L McInerney, M McInerney,
D Helmers.
Ex Under 16's and or 18's playing elsewhere at the end of 07, A Meldrum,
A Belcher, A Blade, D Farrugia, T Dettman, E Hancock, W Else, P Vella,
D Sandle, C Summerfield, D Favarro, P Nugent, J Fisher.

I am sure there are more but now have tears in eyes.:(:(:(
