Woodend/Hesket-Diggers Rest Anzac Medal winner was Brad Else. Highlight was Brett Cook taking a pack mark 5 deep and the game playing under lights in the second half in what can only be described as pouring rain.
Centrals/Rockbank was the same. Under lights in the second half, cloud cover and rain made it hard to see the pill. Prob should have swapped if for a yellow one.
I learny something couple minutes ago. The RDFL dont have the time to update their web page. Still got round 1 results and last years netball results still up. Not good RDFL. Lift your game
Once the game starts with a red one, it must continue for the duration of the match. A ball swap is allowed....but obviously with another red one. Surely clubs/league admin realised that starting one hour later had the potential to finish matches in near darkness, rain, overcast or otherwise.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------Would like an explanation from anyone high up in the RDFL or someone who actually knows whats happening with the under 18's draw this year?
Sunbury have played Kilmore twice already this year, and it's only round 2?? hmmmm..
Why not let the 18's have a bye when their senior team plays a team like Wallan or Centrals? Could also give youngsters opportunities to push for senior selection that week.
Having 18's play without their seniors is also ridiculous! 18's need support to, and they deffinatley don't get it from oppostion teams.
Someone Explain please.
I just think it's simple for every 18's team to have a couple of byes throughout the season? Maybe it's not so simple?

I totally agree. As a coach of an U18's side, I am a huge advocate of the young guys getting a run in the seniors. The good thing for me is that we have the numbers that warrant sending some up to the firsts whilst maintining a full squad of 22. Not all clubs have this luxury.
A lot of the kids playing in the 18's a 1st players just up from the 16's. Given a chance, it proves to give these guys a break to rest their bodies a little. I think the best decision would have been for the 18's to follow their seniors. Keep with the fixture so people aren't running around like headless bloody chooks to get from ground to ground to support thier club, which brings me to me next point.
What happens now, say I get to a ground to coach in the morning in Kilmore, and then I need to get over to Rockbank to play later in afternoon? What happens now if my runner and team manager or myself are playing reserves? It will make it very difficult to get from one ground to another in order to help the club.
At the end of the day, the majority of the time the 18's will follow the seniors, so we shouldn't have to worry about it too much. But this is something that should definately be considered by the league.
Congratulations to the Macedon U18's on the weekend.
Harry Wilson
Understandable that some coaches wanted games and others didn't, just was a little weiry on the subject and thought it had to be rasied, thanks for your input Blues81, i think you will find both sides played round 1 to avoid an early bye they will both have a bye later in the year. plus i believe Sunbury have now gotten 1 game without their seniors out of the way.
I think you will find your 18s will only play away from your seniors once or twice.
If the 18s followed the seniors every week and just had extra byes, they would only play 14 games, Clubs that have too many numbers would find it hard to rotate players fairly and give them as many games as possible. What would your club do if you had to have 7 or 8 miss every week?
Remember kids just want to play.
I agree the kids need the support from their seniors. and that is why the league have tried very hard to minimise that situation.
If anybody out there could draft a draw that is fair and the kids get maximum games i'm sure the league would have looked at it. I know they spent a number of weeks and countless hours liasing with clubs in regards to getting the right mix. Some clubs wanted byes others wanted games.
Harry round 1 Sunbury played Kilmore at Kilmore and seniors were at Melton.
Wrong, Sunbury changed to a yellow ball when it got darker, This was suggested by a league official present at the game.
I believe the rule is you can only change the ball if all parties agree to it, coaches, captains and umpires.
Yes it did make it interesting starting later. I don't think that many clubs lighting systems in the league would actually be up to standard for night games. I know ours are very far from it, but all the same every little bit of extra light helped. (plus i think the darkest clouds blew over)
I wouldn't have thought that Wallan's ground would be up to the standard. Saturday just gone was bordering on acceptability but then that could also have been due to the Broadford Kangaroo's jumpers clashing with Wallan's!!
Having been to most grounds,, I don't think that there are any in the RDFL that would be right to host a night game at the moment.
The rule is that if a ball is to be changed it is to be changed either at the start of every quarter or at half time. Being one of the umpires at woodend on the weekend neither Sam or Shaun approached us prior to the game or at half time to enquire about changing the ball.
I think it's done this way so that a team coming from behind doesn't have a drier, lighter ball to kick home with in the last quarter.
will someone please stop kenny from umpiring ever again in a seniors match he is an absolute disgrace to the profession. I wouldnt let him umpire junior footy either, would ruin the kids careers and development. The yellow card he gave a cetrals player on the weekend was categorically the worst decision i have ever seen. A midget of a centrals player pushed a 6 foot 2 guy who had just kicked him and got sent off. Could have cost centrals the game.
Dont like to umpire bash but ive seen Kenny do a few games over last 3 years and to be blunt, he is not good. Being an older fella who struggles to get around i dont know how he keeps getting senior matches. Good fella though, have had a few beers with him after games so dont like to knock him to much
nice one eagleAt least he is out there having a go. Without him, the umpires would be struggling to fill all the games that they do.
As keeps being stated, the umpires are struggling for numbers and no-one is putting their hand up to do games that would otherwise have no umpires.
I challenge anyone to have a go and do a couple of games and then say that they are perfect.
If you aren't happy with some of the umpires that you get, then provide an alternative, put your hand up and do a couple of games.
