Funny thing is we never recollect too many that go the other way.... but I'll bet that happens also.

And anyway it didnt effect the result did it pal ?
No it didn't effect the result but it did make us feel as though the umpires were against us the rest of the day and that feeling is a hard one to battle

Congratulations to the Under 18 interleague squad after having a thumping win over Ballarat last night.
For a league that is constantly rubbished over how far behind leagues such as Ballarat that we are, the Under 18's have now defeated Ballarat 3 years running. A fantastic result showing that the young players coming through the RDFL system are of an exceptionally high standard.

Reasons: Riddell look to be the premier side, have plenty of players with finals experience and still have reasonable depth. Macedon have had quite a few players missing and still been very impressive. You know they will probably only continue to get better injuries permitting. Lancefield probably have the talent, but you still have to question their "big game" experience and whether those young players can handle finals footy. The young fellas did it in 2004 so you would expect the club's leaders to try and handle this season in a similar fashion. Woodend-Hesket will be another side that improves as the season goes on. Cooky will get a better idea of his opposition and how to position his players. Does he play forward or in the ruck, how does he play Knox etc. They still have plenty of grand final experience. Meanwhile, Sunbury Kangaroos will be let down on the big grounds come finals because of their lack of a gun tall and mobile forward. Touch wood but you would expect Cuffe will struggle to run out a full season at some stage without being rested. The Kangaroos treat every game like its a final and for that reason they can't maintain their form all year - they run out of steam. Having said that I hear they are in discussions with a key tall so if he transfers to Boardman Oval they come right back into contention.
The others are simply making up the numbers. Wallan will get better and might sneak into the top six, while Broadford will improve and will win 4-5 in a row at some stage. Romsey, Kilmore, Melton Central and Diggers Rest may cause a few upsets on the way but probably can't put enough good games together with their lack of depth once injuries hit. The Burra are the biggest disappointments. Their kids haven't come on as well as they would have liked and they lack pace around the wings and flanks.

Love the kid, but no, he won't win the Bowen.
He'll poll reasonably well, but he's not even 18 yet and would have to defy 70-odd years of history to win it.
He's an outstanding talent and worth his weight in gold to the Tigers and wouldn't be out of depth at any level in country and metropolitan footy.
I reckon Shane Muir won it when he was about that age or younger.
I think Shane won his first Bowen when he was 19 for Woodend-Hesket in 1981 with 29 votes. I may be wrong though. He won another for Melton South in 1984 with 27 votes.
Winning Michelson medals by then for Kyneton IIRC.

reasons for my odds
Riddell are the premier team even with the losses in personnel, have recruited well and have the experience in the big games.
I have Lancefield as the early challenger, been in great form early with big wins over woodend and local rival romsey. From sources they still have a couple of players to return from overseas which will bolster their line up.
Sunbury are red hot at the moment but I do question their ability to keep it up consistently for the whole season. Garth Ploog returning gives them a dangerous forward target but i think their depth is a serious issue.
Macedon are prob the side that looks to be most improved from last year. I havent seen them yet but they were a half decent young side last year with some tall timber and adding quality such as fleming and johnstone should reinforce there structure and provide leadership for the younger brigade. Thinkning about it I would prob have them just in front of sunbury.
Woodend are a quality side with a strong core of players who will be most dangerous towards the end of the season when players return and get used to the system. Cook is a quality individual who wont tolerate poor performance and I expect them to push with a late charge.
Diggers are next, and even though they have had a poor start i expect them to rebound and look dangerous with experience in giant killing as seen last year.
Centrals prob let themselves down in the first two weeks of the season but have bounced back to be 2-2 atm. Chugg is a huge loss to anyside, but fenton looks to be a strong forward giving them the forward target they have lacked in the past. Need to improve their consistency but I expect them to vie for a finals spot.
Romsey had a bad weekend last week and must be some issues there but I think as another young side they will be incosistent but will be able to get an upset win or two against the better sides.
Kilmore have been decimated by injuries especially to their coach who from reports would be in the top 10 players in the comp. Very young side similar to romsey who will struggle to string consecutive wins with incosistent performances.
I dont know what to make of Wallan who looked on paper at the start of the year to be top 4 material but then got touched up by kilmore in r1. Will have to wait until I get some more info and see them in the flesh.
Rockbank are a aggressive side who attack the man. My sources tell me that their win against centrals was deserved but they were lucky they were playing in some of the worst conditions for football that have ever been seen. Have plenty of ticker but skill level and fitness do look like weaknesses. Will be more competitive than previous years but will only win games when the conditions are suited to them. ie) windy, wet and muddy.
Broadford from my point of view are too top heavy and rely on Taylor andn spargo to do the bulk of the work. Sides that nullify these players will have comfortable wins, with depth an issue. I dont see them winning 4 or 5 games consecutively they just dont have the across the board talent. Very physical side though.

What did you get wrong? How old was Muir when he won the Bowen at Woodend-Hesket? I could have sworn he was 19.

My tips for round 5.
I know there has been a lot of talk about how Romsey & Lancefield have a big rivalry, but Diggers and Sunbury I reckon would almost match that. Don't worry about the ladder positions or previous results, this is going to be close....but I just think that Sunbury's form will get over them over the line. Sunbury - 4 points
I was disappointed to read that Rockbank didn't play well last week against Kilmore...I suppose when you have been down for so long finding that consistency in your game will take a while to develop. Woodend would be relieved that they are not playing a team in the top four and really need to win this to stay in touch with the 6. Since they are at home I am tipping the Woodsmen to start a string of wins. - Woodend 32 points
Another derby game with Broadford hosting Kilmore.....hopefully this will be the beginning of a healthy rivalry. It is unfortunate the Broadford haven't been able to get up and win a game yet and Kilmore will want to make sure they put this game away after a good result last week to stay in the 6. Woodend with home ground advantage will be too strong for Rockbank, a young side that is going to put up inconsistent efforts this year. Innella and Walker coming off the wings have been dominating. The Hawks need more from the recruits. Woodend by 28 points.
Kilmore missing a few still, I think the "Other" Roos might open thier account in this one. But it will be a tough struggle all day. Broadford by 4 points.
