When are you picking the pen and paper up again and returning to Newspaper House as chief football writer Doona?

I dont think they're looking for anyone. Besides, I really could't handle the sooks in the Kilmore pubs last time round when they didn't get in the best they'd pass comment even though it was the club or coaches 99% of the time who gave me the info. I see those days a bit like my coaching . . . . tried it, no good at it, so I moved on

Any teams playing a match this weekend? Some Melbourne clubs had contacted us, and we're like you're kidding right?

Heard a good one at the local Coles last night.

During Kilmore's team meeting, one of the more confident team members was continually butting in, chatting and asking questions when a fellow team mate said "you can ask questions at the end, just let someone else have a go".

The playing group wholeheartedly agreed.

The confident young man replies with "If anyone here knows more about football than me, speak up".

Casually from the back of the room someone just simply says "errr Jamesey?"

Pretty funny I reckon :D

Preseason Review

Well, the season is almost upon us and I thought I would go through the season ahead as I see it.. Even though as my good friend Grubby3 pointed out, I know nothing and this will add little value, it will entertain me so I shall do it.. We have so many excellent and valuable contributors on this thread, I cant wait to see contributions of others or responses to mine.

So here we go..

Lancefield - Last years premiers look to have the side to be challenging for back to back flags in 2010. Fitzy has been able to keep most of the list together with some valuable additions sure to strengthen the lineup. A strong preseason coupled with a strong belief within a strong team environment should see the Tigers as the team to beat in 2010, they are after all the reigning premier. One area the Tigers excelled in last year was the core leadership, the importance of Simon Choate cannot be underestimated, while he was thinking of retirement, we might see number 29 running around again, although he may not carry the mantle of skipper, I expect that to be handed to either ex coach Chris Collins or reliable defender/stopper Travis Smith. The Tigers strength is their ability to come together as a team and this will be the test, will a premiership break that down?? With the leadership at Lancefield I doubt it.
Predicted Finish - Top 3
Key Players - T.Smith, C.Collins, L.Irwin, S.Choate.
The X-Factor - Myles Dorman
The key - Cohesive Unit

Romsey - The 2009 runner up will be primed for a tilt at the flag this year after holding on to key players in Moorcroft and Green and adding young midfielder Whiting-Smith from Heidelberg. The Redbacks will be on a revenge mission in 2010 believing that what rightfully belonged to them was taken away in 2009. While the Tigers have cohesion, the Redbacks have unpredictability, a factor that can see the side demolish an opposition, but on the balancing hand, can see the side completely implode. The Redbacks have the player I consider the best young talent in the competition in Cameron Dawson, he is cocky and arrogant on field, but that can work in your favor out on a football field. Steve Burlak needs a big year, he was very disappointing in the Grand Final and he remains one of the best key forwards in the competition. The question for the Redbacks remain, can the arrogant talent take apart the competition, or will the implode under pressure.
Predicted Finish - Top 3
Key Players - G.Moorcroft, S.Green, S.Burlak
The X-Factor - Cameron Dawson
The Key - Arrogance

Riddell - The Bombers have had a strong recruitment process over the break in an attempt to bounce back to the top in 2010. The returns of James Climas and Aaron Blade will assist a midfield that broke down during the 2009 finals series, while Mick Allen and the recruitment of Matt Baird should assist in covering for the loss of last years league leading goalkicker Chris Meacham. 2010 will be a big year for the Bombers as opinions throughout the league have the influence or the aura of the Riddell name starting to lose a bit of its gloss. No longer are opposition sides scared of the Bomber machine, no longer will opposition sides be beaten before they run out. The question will be, can Riddell gain that aura back, can they return to the thumping of opposition sides to send a clear message. Only time will tell.
Predicted finish - Top 4
Key Players - J.Allen, J.Climas, A.Blade
The X-Factor - Mick Allen
The Key - Aura

Diggers Rest - The Burra are consistently a finals threat to all opposition every year. They are written off, but continually defy popular opinion to fight and find a way. Last year, they were a mere goal away from a preliminary final. The return of Craig Marshall will be a bonus, but the strength of the Burra comes from the usual suspects. Shaun Sims, Jeff Heritage, Cole Laurie and Craig Thompson take on much of the Burra expectations while over the years Hopkins always finds that gem in a youngster, last year was Kite. The Burra needs alot to go thier way, while they are similar to Lancefield in the fact that they are all best mates, the Burra are close to the best "team" in the competition, but will that continue to be enough in 2010, time will tell.
Predicted Finish - 6th - 8th
Key Players - S.Sims, B.Sluggett, C.Thompson
The X-Factor - Cole Laurie
The Key - Youth

Next 4 reviews - Woodend/Hesket, Macedon, Sunbury Kangaroos, Wallan.

Slow day at work IMS? good work keep it coming.

Come on guys sign up for the RDFL tipping, only a couple signed up so far.
A bit of fun.

So disappointed to read about the RDFL losing the AFL Cairns game to the Ballarat FL because we were unable to set a date!!! The idea was excellent and gave our local youngsters a great representative game, losing it is a real backward step I would have thought..

Miles is playing at the Northern Bullants.

If Myles is playing at the Bullants why did he play against Rolling Meadows in an Under 18 practice match last week? would have thought risking injury doing this even if Lancefield is his home club would not make much sense if he is playing Bullants?

Dont forget to sign up this week people!!!

Cheers mate just hooked in, actually forgot about it - C'mon lads $5 for a bit of fun along the way in 2010 :thumbsu:

Woodend/Hesket - The Hawks had a solid 2009 under new coach Brett Cook and will be hoping to take another step in 2010. Only a couple of years ago the Hawks were premiers but key losses since then have meant that the Hawks have had to almost start again. This year the losses of Shippard, Podbury and others wont help, but some recruiting has gone a ways to covering this issue. The key for the Hawks has always been the strength of the unders and depth into the Reserves, they have always been able to unearth a hidden gem. They will need several of the young stars to step up to be a finals team in 2010.
Predicted Finish - 6-10
Key Players - M.Knox, J.Waters, M.Stacey
The X-Factor - Brett Cook
The key - Youth

Macedon - The Cats were oh so disappointing come finals in 2009. A drubbing at the hands of the Burra came totally unexpected to most and most would suggest that the Cats showed very little resistance that day. But write the Cats off at your peril, they have a very talented list that comprises some very good youngsters. Losing the 2009 Bowen Medallist would be a disappointment, but the Cats have recruited well again and covered any possible losses that they may have had. The regular season will see the Cats right up in the mix again, even challenging for a top 4 spot, but it is finals time when we will see what Macedon is made of.
Predicted Finish - 4-6
Key Players - A.McCarthur, J.Wilton, J.Wright
The X-Factor - Dylan Wright
The key - Will the rope tighten?

Sunbury Kangaroos - The Roos have been the talking point of the off season so far. A new coach, strong recruiting and a new attitude at Boardman reserve will see a totally different side taking the field. The Roos have become perennial finalists and were probably a little unlucky to miss last year, but several new recruits in 2010 will ensure they are challenging at the top end of the ladder. Last years league leading goal kicker Chris Meacham is a very handy addition to the Roos line-up. But the improvement will come from the guys that not everyone knows about or expects, some very handy youngsters will play a big role in the Roos 2010.
The key for the Roos will come along the similar lines to that of the Redbacks, EGO, getting the new players and older alike to work together, shouldn't take too long for Helmers and the Roos will be contenders.
Predicted Finish - Top 4
Key Players - L.McInerney, J.Cuffe, C.Meacham
The X-Factor - M.Welsh
The key - EGO

Wallan - This time last year, the Magpies were the talk of the town, everyone rated them as premiership favorites along with the Bombers, there were Magpies members all over this forum talking the talk. After Round 1, the season was a mess, the Magpies were smashed and things only went downhill in the first half of the season from there. The positive, the second half of the season showed what Wallan were capable of and with some big recruiting over the off season albeit a little more subdued this time around, the Magpies are building a side that could certainly be a challenger in 2010. They have a very good coach, but the problem they seem to have at the moment is a lack of a winning environment, but rest assured Pederson is a winning coach and will be doing everything to ensure that this season doesn't start like last year. They will want to be in the mix from Round 1.
Predicted Finish - 6-10
Key Players - The recruits.
The X-Factor - David Fowler
The key - Environment

Final list - Broadford, Kilmore, Melton Centrals, Rockbank

A few more signed up so far this week but more numbers still needed.. Sign up peoples and add a bit more spice and interest to this thread for throughout the season :thumbsu:

premiers:favourites riddell/LANCEFILED
Wooden Spooners:Rockbank
League medal: gary
Biggest Improver: sunbury (UP TO ROUND 6 WHEN THE MONEY RUNS OUT)
Biggest Slider:SUNBURY FROM ROUND 7
Goalkicker:Aaron James
Most Expensive: Romsey
Most Under-Rated TeamLANCEFILED
Most OVER-Rated Player: THE OLDEST GRUB
Most Loyal Player in league: ROBBO FROM RIDDELL
Toughest Player in league: FOWLER

Broadford - The other Roos are staring down the barrell at a tough season ahead.. Multiple losses from the top end of the Broadford list are going to hurt the Roos while the numbers coming in just dont seem to be there. A new coach in the off season has also exited and caretaker coach from last season has been installed as the full time coach for 2010. Alot will depend on the young Roos players led by Grant Wearne. But the Roos will need alot more than that, it looks like a long season ahead for Broadford.
Predicted Finish - 10-12
Key Players - G.Wearne, M.Edwards, M.Gillard
The X-Factor - Chooka Barton
The key - Building blocks

Kilmore - Over the break Kilmore has worked hard on recruiting to make themselves a finals contender in 2010. The massive signings of Aaron James, Matt Robertson and Robbie Whittmar to join Guy Booker have converted the Blues from inconsistent competitors last year, to genuine contenders to a finals spot this year. Several questions will remain to be answered until the season is underway. Will there be added scrutiny on James, will Whittmar be able to handle the pressure of expectation one year on? Kilmore will be a dangerous proposition to all opponents every week, but if Booker is able to get them to gel and get enough football forward of centre to allow James to have an impact on games, then they just may be more than that. The key will be stopping a possible implosion every week..
Predicted Finish - 5-8
Key Players - G.Booker, M.Robertson, R.Whittmar
The X-Factor - Aaron James
The key - Happy players

Melton Centrals - New coach, new attitude? That will be the hope at Centrals after a disappointing finish to 2009. Centrals had the best man to lead them at the helm in Mark Greenshields, but they possibly just were not ready for him. The new dawn at Centrals sees some recruiting done from the BFL and the hope of the Centrals faithful rest with them. Some bigger bodies will certainly help, Centrals have always struggled in that field. But will it be enough with so much improvement coming from everyone else? Brian Wheelahan and Kane Bullen are still the heart and soul, but will others follow thier lead and help take Centrals back into a finals position.
Predicted Finish - 10-12
Key Players - L.Wilson, K.Bullen, J.Armstrong
The X-Factor - B.Wheelahan
The key - Passion

Rockbank - The Rams have quietly recruited pretty well in the off season and will look once again to improve this year. While they have done so in the past 2 years, slowly, this year should see them show a more marked improvement. Sure, I still dont think they will compete with the top sides, but they should win enough games to not finish on the bottom, but I thought that last year too. The key for the Rams, they really need to move on past this "everyone is against us" theme that has held them back for 3 or so seasons, everyone would love to see the Rams improve, but they continue to do the wrong thing on the field, leaving everyone with a bitter taste. Hopefully Leigh Spry can move them from this place and just have them concentrating on playing good football.
Predicted Finish - 10-12
Key Players - L.Maumill, J.Zerafa, M.Kennedy
The X-Factor - D.Innella
The key - What about us??

My 2010 Predicted ladder

This would have to be the silliest quote ever written on this site.. And there has been some stupid quotes... Its a nice attempt at a bite though, but at least back yourself up, Lancefield the most under-rated side?? They are reigning premiers.. Goof
