and good to see the local town drunk tapping on with the senior coach after the game to made for some good post game entertainment[/quote]

Any comments on this sly one????? lol. :D

he must have been watching the netballers then mate, semmo, wasnt to bad but that young bloke give me a break, he was disgraceful, if that was a good umpiring job then the standard of this league is laughable, the 2 umpires that umpired the cats hawks game the week before were terrific but that young bloke gee wizz very very ordinary, not taking away anything from wallan wanted the ball more and were 1st to it all day, btw iceman dont know what you are talking about one of our players kicking one of your blokes??? and good to see the local town drunk tapping on with the senior coach after the game to made for some good post game entertainment

I saw that too gboi, WTF? can anyone from wallan elaborate?

To the people bagging the umpires why don't you do something about it? Why not go and train and learn to be an umpire? Go and train in rain during the week and then get abused for 2 hours on the weekend.

I read the rubbish above and don't think the umpires are doing a bad job but the clubs involved have discipline problems. Easy to blame the umps when you need an excuse for a loss.

cut it mate, you expect umpires to umpire the game fairly and with clear knowledge of the rules, which 2 of the umpires in this league clearly dont have, there is no excuses for how we played on the weekend, and there should be no excuses for these 2 particular umps not having a clue

You made your own point right there.. As much as I don't want to do it.. I have to agree with KA.. All we are seeing here is the Woodend people defending themselves with an argument about the umpiring.. Can't you let your football do the talking?? I will say, never would have heard this coming from Gidds when he coached the premiership side... The umpires are trying to do a job, no wonder they are heavily distracted from doing the job when they are subjected to abuse from the players for most of the game...

Anyways, it was some friendly advice to try and concentrate on playing instead of arguing, but it was a moot point, because all that has come back is argument and justification, sounds much like what happened on Saturday really... If the whining about the umpire is going to continue for the Hawks, it is going to be a VERY long season...

Moving on...

Nothing in it Mongrel, some idiot walked into the rooms and started paying out on some little fella, using abusive language and threatening behavior, the coach walked him out twice and then the bloke took a swing once out the door, the coach defended himself and came straight back in, unless you have security on the door, anyone can walk in off the street.

Interested in finding out what people's opinion are on the following after a discussion point was raised over the last couple of days...

Who is the player from either your side or in the competition that you believe is capable of completing each of the following???

The marking "Highlight" reel (Brett Burton): Steve Ruane (DR)
The goal kicking "Highlight" reel (Daniel Motlop): Myles Dorman (LF)
The seems to be able to play forever (Dustin Fletcher): Jamie Cuffe (SK)
The Rolls Royce power midfielder (Chris Judd): Matt Robertson (Kil)
The accumulator (Dane Swan): Jeff Heritage (DR)
The league B&F vote getter, no matter what (Adam Goodes): Aaron Blade (Rid)
The annoying weasel (Steven Milne): Jim Hepburn (WH)
The spoiling king (Michael Jamieson): Warren Kairns (Rom)
The rebound defender (Sam Fisher): Kane Bullen (MC)
The tagger (Clinton Jones): Guy Donovan (WH)
The eccentric forward (Brendan Fevola): Aaron James (Kil)
The difference maker forward (Daniel Bradshaw): Chris Meacham (SK)
The Power forward (Jonathan Brown): Steve Burlak (Rom)
The marathon forward (Nick Riewoldt): Garth Ploog (SK)
Simply the best (Gary Ablett Jr): Gary Moorcroft (Rom)

Obviously didn't know that the coach was someone that should be shown a little more respect, otherwise you could end up on your backside :D

I would think that Romsey would have Gary signed to a standard playing contract.. But there has been rumblings that things are not all well at Romsey, so who knows.. I would expect to see Gary this week, although not so sure about the big Yak who is a little sore.. If Moorcroft left, then I have no doubt that Green would go with him, but the only way I can see this happening is if the Coach is let go... Guess we will all wait and see what happens in the coming days and weeks...
I also heard this rumour last night, was told he has been shopping himself around and the deal is done. Suppose you reap what you sow, they bought him in did they think he wouldnt leave for more money?

There is obviously some issues currently down at the Redbacks, but they are a proud club, they will sort through it, they just need to make the tough calls and do what is right for the club.

If Gary is shopping himself around (I am certainly not saying he is) then they may be better off without him.. Beware a scorned Romsey though, with all of this talk they are a very dangerous proposition for the undefeated Roos this week.

He's getting a bit long in the tooth show, the Fanua brothers were close by,he should have left it to them!

Pretty sure that's not what those attempted car jackers thought from a while back ;)

It was about this time last year when he walked out on Silvan chasing a bit more coin, l think Marby is where his ex team mates from Silvan Haynes & Bullen have gone.

Very interesting.

It's amazing what you can do when your lifes on the line!

It would be absolutely fantastic if the league was able to do this... But unfortunately, I think the admin are still currently a little overwhelmed with the workload to look into it as yet....

RDFL 2010 Season - Round 4

We head into Round 4 with some very interesting games coming up within the league.. Romsey teetering with a 0-3 record, Kilmore needing to give more to be a contender, the Hawks inconsistent and Sunbury Kangaroos, Wallan, Riddell and Diggers Rest leading the pack.

Woodend/Hesket FNC Vs Lancefield FNC
Gilbert Gordon Oval - Woodend
A massive game for both of these clubs as the Tigers start to hit their straps, while the Hawks struggle for consistency away from home.
The Hawks will be hungry to bounce back after last week's disappointing loss to Wallan away from home. The Hawks may just be the best "home" team in the competiton and they will be out to prove a point after what might be said was an undisciplined loss to the Magpies. It is the Hawks younger players that have done the leg work so far, Rory Cross has had a flying start to the year. The former Rising Gun nominee looks to have stepped up a notch so far and what I saw a couple of weeks ago is moving with freedom up forward and through the midfield. The Hawks problem, as strange as it may seem, is that they struggled to find an avenue to goal in their two losses to date. In the big win against Macedon, they had no trouble going forward, can they replicate that this week is the question. I find it a little puzzling that Brett Cook played back last week as he would be a nightmare match up for opposition sides up forward, especially when the Hawks are not scoring. Matt Knox missed last weeks game and obviously was missed, the Tigers will need to keep an eye on him if he plays. Last weeks Rising Gun nominee Daniel Toman has had a fantastic start to the year and looks to be a player on the rise, but the Hawks just have to find something out of Ross and Jesse Waters this week. The Tigers come away from Round 3 smiling after disposing of a disappointing Romsey. Brian Ruffell, so important to the Tigers line up looks to be striking form, which is an ominous sign for opposition backmen. The Tigers have depended on Under 18's coming through the system and so far, it has paid dividends. Luke Malone, Rob Cini and Caleb Plowman were all in the best for the Tigers last week, while Tom Waters continues to provide the ball for Collins, John and co through the middle of the ground. This week will provide a big trip for the Tigers to face, although going 2 and 2 in the opening rounds wouldn't fuss them too much as they have alot of talent still not playing, it will be interesting to see when some of that talent might return.
With a few showers predicted, anything could happen in this game, if it is wet it might just give the Hawks the edge at their home ground, but always beware the Tigers as they will give strong account of themselves as they always do.
Game Key: Could just be the weather. The Tigers seem to have the stronger and more talented list, but if they underestimate the Hawks at home (Hello Macedon) then it might just come back to bite them hard.
Lancefield by 15 points.

Broadford FNC Vs Melton Centrals FNC
Harley Hammond Reserve - Broadford
The battle of the potential wooden spooners this week looms as an intruiging game of football. Centrals remain undefeated but flew home last week to almost topple Kilmore at home, from all reports, some of the football that Centrals played was as good as they have produced in the past 3 years. In saying that, they kicked 2 goals in the first half, that is disappointing and wont win them many games of football. Granted, the 2nd half was an excellent performance and to run out the game kicking 6 goals to nil in the final term shows that the fitness level wont be a let down. The pleasing thing for Centrals would be that the reliable players that have been there for the club in the last 5 years are the guys that are playing well. Glenn Nankervis, Matt Nicholls and Josh Armstrong have regularly been named in the best for Centrals, while Brian Wheelahan is improving each week. Broadford are battling, but that isn't a negative, the players representing the club are giving their all for the jumper, but they just lack that touch of class that will win them games. At home, they are a different proposition, the Broady ground is a little different, I don't know what it is, but it can be tricky for opposition that rarely see grounds like it. Centrals might just be one of the sides that do, as the small Maccy Park ground is similar in some ways. Broadford continues to get great service from Marcus Webb and Mitch Collier, but probably need more drive from Gillard and Wearne, yes, the side is struggling, but these two provided some great drive from the half back line in 09, it is needed again, possibly more so, in 2010. Michael Edwards is a key for Broadford.
Game Key: Could come down to the performance of the veteran stars, alot will depend on guys like Brian Wheelahan and Kane Bullen for Centrals, while Mick Edwards and Damien Barton (if he plays) will be the keys for the Roos.
Melton Centrals by 8 points

Kilmore FNC Vs Diggers Rest FNC
JJ Clancy Reserve - Kilmore
With the season looking like it will be tight, so much rides on this game for both sides. While Diggers sit undefeated at this stage, a run of a few losses can knock a side right back to the pack... That is where the danger lies this week for the Burra.. Sims, McCabe, Laurie and Ruane are the keys without doubt for the Burra and the Blues will have to be wary, but it is the 2nd string Burra are the guys doing the major damage so far.. Brad Sluggett has been providing plenty of drive of from the wing, while Stu Clarke has been excellent the past couple of games.. It is the smaller forward set-up that is giving opposition sides headaches though, Laurie, McCabe, Sims, a rotating Clarke and Ruane as well as Dan Reilly have given the Burra a plethora of forward options that they are making full use of. The question is, who will go to James, Matt Walker played on him the last time the Burra met James and did a reasonable job, the fact is though, it was a difficult day condition wise and James had 12 shots at goal in 2 and a half quarters that day. If the day is reasonable, will that result in 8-10 goals for the big fella. Kilmore are teetering, there should be no doubt about that. 8 goals up on an undermanned Centrals and they almost went down. They need a lift and fast. Matt Robertson, Guy Booker and Justin Collis are the obvious choices, if they can move the ball quickly through the midfield and just get it in long to James, he will do the damage, they also seem to need someone to work to the big man's feet. Codey Phillips is a natural rover and could have an impact if allowed. Booker's biggest headache though is his back 6. They don't seem to have the capability to hold up a run of goals and this could come to hurt them this week against a Burra side with so many options. The midfield battle of these two sides could well be worth the admission price though and there is no doubt that JJ Clancy could well be buzzing when the final siren blows at this one.
Game Key: No doubt the defensive side of both sides. If Kilmore can restrict the Burra forwards, then James is good enough to kick a score big enough to assist in a Blues win, if it becomes a shoot out, the Burra will have too many options.
Diggers Rest by 22 points.

Riddell FNC Vs Wallan FNC
Riddells Creek Reserve - Riddell
A battle of two undefeated sides will see one of these two drop back to the pack with one loss, that is how close it will be at the top of the table in 2010. The Bombers are flying, proving they are once again the favorites for the flag with a strong win against Macedon at Tony Clarke. The Bombers were again well served up forward by perennial goal sneak Mick Allen, while Cam McCabe continues to kick goals and be a thorn to opposition sides. Gerard Liddell has been the standout early for the Bombers, playing predominantly in the midfield he has been racking up possession and driving the Bombers forward, with great support from James Climas and Cam Casson. The Bombers again have one of the premier starting midfields in the competition. This year though, the depth of the rotations may be tested a little more. But to this date, they haven't had any problems getting the job done. Nick Ash is playing his usual reliable defensive rebound football in the back half, as is Xavier Codd. The Bombers seem to have a nice even spread right across the field, former Bowen Medallist Aaron Blade has had a quiet start to the year and will need to step it up in the coming weeks with some tough games on the Bomber horizon. The Magpies are just going along nicely under Mark Pederson, getting the job done each week so far. Last weeks smacking of the Hawks raised a few eyebrows though and the Magpies may not be flying low under the radar any longer. The strength of the Magpies is the midfield. Carl Groth has so far been dominant, while the return of Saliba is immenent. Shane Jacobs has been in the Magpies best every week, while Gavin Langborne seems to have filled the role vacated by Dave Cornish up forward, kicking goals on a regular basis to take some of the heat off Fowler. Both of these sides have contested ball winners, it is where the battle will be won, around the stoppages, the big concern for Wallan will be whether they have the fire power to stick with Riddell.
Game Key: The stoppages will play a big part in this game, the worry for Riddell is if they approach the game without the respect that this Magpie side deserve, they have done everything right so far, and will be very dangerous this week.
Riddell by 26 points.

Macedon FC Vs Rockbank FSC
Tony Clarke Reserve - Macedon
The Cats would be disappointed in falling short last week against the Bombers and will be primed to bounce back in front of the home faithful this week. While their form has been a little up and down in the opening weeks, the Cats list is full of talent. They will be looking forward to seeing James Wright, Dylan Wright, Ash Fleming and young Dan Markworth in full flight this week. While the Cats have been ok, there are plenty of people still waiting for that breakout performance, while they have the opportunity this week, we will have to see how they respond to the physical pressure that is sure to be put on by the opposition. The big query on the Cats is still if they can handle the physical stuff handed out by the opposition, the Rams have become very good at handing it out. Alot will depend on Tim Dettman and Darren Goodwin to lead the way. The Rams were disappointing last week, very disappointing. They need to bounce back this week with a lifted intensity when attacking the ball, as well as working hard at every opportunity, it was something that lacked badly last week, there were some that just were not willing to work hard, to bust a tag, to create space through run, to put defensive pressure on, it needs to lift all over the ground. There is no doubt that Zerafa is a key for the Rams and hopefully they will see the return of Jackal this week to help him out as well as the return of Cam Clayton from the Reserves. The Rams depend alot on the recruits and hopefully this week will see a lift, there is a big opportunity for Michael Kennedy to really put a stamp on this contest. Brendan Newitt was excellent last week, as was Matt Krul, but the Rams just need that little lift from all over the ground. Its a big ground Tony Clarke, so the Rams will need to work even harder, that is where the question mark will remain.
Game Key: Ground space, the Cats have several run and carry players that enjoy the space at TC. The Rams will need to be able to work to cover this ground, but also work to create space of their own when they have the ball.
Macedon by 46 points.

Match of the Round
The Feral Fans Cup
Jamie Cuffe Medal
Sunbury Kangaroos FNC Vs Romsey FNC
Boardman Reserve - Sunbury
The Feral Fans cup will take place this week in front of the hostile and volitile combined crowds of the Roos and the Redbacks, so many great battles on the field in the past 3 years have often been the background to some of the greatest battles of wit ever displayed in a crowd.
The Kangaroos are flying, it is as simple as that. They have so far been much too good for the opposition in front of them and have some players in just outstanding form. The forward line consists of a guy booting bags in each of the first 3 weeks, as well as a very creative smaller brigade which have caused opposition defenders nightmares in the opening rounds. The midfield has depth, excellent rotations and ball winning ability. It has kept the Roos in the contest when opposition sides have had a run in the opening 3 games. The ruck consists of a guy the size of a flag pole and a mountain. Leigh Fischendon and Steve James have been a dominant ruck combination. The back 6 have been a little disrupted through injury, but again, have stood tall amid all opposition attacks, then you have the great man. Jamie Cuffe. Enough said. But wait a minute, the Kangas have only faced Broadford, Kilmore and Rockbank so far, I know, you can only beat the opposition in front of you, but they are 3 sides that are struggling. But in saying that, the Roos have been very impressive and there is certainly no love lost when it comes to the Redbacks, an opportunity to put one of the final nails in the coffin for the Redbacks 2010 season - yes, thank you very much. The Redbacks, well, what can one say. They are struggling, 0-3 with the top 2 sides in the next two weeks... Talk of the star player looking to move on, we all know that means two players. Adam Kearney needs to find a blend, and he needs to find it now. Talk on the street is that the big YAK, Ryan Connellan is struggling and very sore, everyone knows he will give the Redbacks everything he has got every week, then he will get up and do it all again, hopefully his body allows him to get up for this week, Steve Burlak is playing across CHB, its an interesting move, I would push him back to Full Forward and isolate him one on one. Cam Dawson is still showing strong form though and is a dangerous prospect for the Roos, while Ash McNaughton is at the moment far and away the Redbacks best player. Romsey just need things to fall back into place, they are a passionate club and a passionate playing list. There is no need to over complicate things, this side is good enough to win just doing the basics, and maybe that is just what they need to do this week. They had more scoring shots than the Tigers last week, proving that they are in fact good enough, and found plenty of spark from recruit Brad Mitchell. Something just needs to click, and when it does, look out the rest of the comp.
Game Key: The Superstars, again, it will come down to which of the key players in each of the sides have the biggest influence. Meacham Vs Kairns will be an entertaining match up. Can the Redbacks kick enough goals.

I shall change my prediction to be..... Dean Helmers....

Probably because of past experience, he doesn't want things to get out of hand again... But it is obvious that nobody will ever learn from a simple tip of keeping it shut.. Instead, a mental block that seems to make people believe that they can reshape the umpiring world with argument rather than realising that the quickest fix will come from within, rather than the umpires... Every action will result in a reaction, but lets just keep arguing and blaming the umpires, I am sure that eventually that will work, even if it hasn't by now after 100 years, if maybe we yell at them a little louder, and argue more often, surely it will improve in our eyes.. Oh, wait, it will never improve in our eyes until 100% of decisions go our way, until any player that gives away a free kick gets away with it.. The umpires are always wrong, one way or another.. Its all thier fault actually.. They are certainly the reason we argue all the time...

The first coach that can get his team to shut up at all times and just concentrate on doing thier job right rather than worry about what everyone else is doing will coach the perfect team.. But seeing as though there is no possible way that we are able to do this, we must spend all of our time blaming everyone else for our performance...

One of Melton Centrals team rules is not to talk to the umpires, Hasn't helped so far.

I know the umpire issue has been done to death but for those who critisize umpires should simply pick up a whistle and give it a go. The Team are more than happy to have you on board. Comments were made at training last night that the association feels fantastic to be around given that more are turning to the whistle and generating a fantastic atmosphere.

I've often described a game of football as three games.. the spectators, the player, the umpire. Players want the ball at all costs, spectators will generally only support the decision that goes in their team's favour PLUS their view boundary side of the ground is much better than the umpires.

For an umpire positioned in the corridor, it only takes one player to momentarily get in the way of blocking their view of a free kick or momentarily look away at a contest further down the field or players behind them... whether you're a goal, field or boundary.. umpires are the hardest working sector of a game either in a mental aspect or physical, both.. depending on your role. Umpires acknowledge within themselves that they do miss the odd one here or there and if the reaction is enormous, it is very easy to constantly re-think why you didnt pay that decision and you become distracted rather than getting on with the next bit of play and resulting in missing more free kicks because they lose focus.. MUCH the same way as a player who lets an umpiring decision that didn't go their way effect their game and consequently proceeds to do actions outside putting the missed free aside and getting back to the game.

Starting out as a young umpire several years back.. it was easy to be immersed in the crowd reaction who would continually get on your back because you were worried about missing that one decision and you proceed to miss more. Are their identities in umpiring? It's irrelevant.. I know at the end of the day.. if it's Semmo that I'm umpiring with or a first gamer or Bill Connell in the goals.. whoever, it's a great club to be part of.. everyone loves to have a laugh, talk footy.. life.. work.. and they're going out every Saturday and Sunday doing the best job they can. I had a run with Tony 'Mad dog' O'Dwyer on the weekend who hung up the boots from Romsey last year and he just couldnt wait to get out there and have some fun.

Bag the umpires if you may but as they say, don't knock something until you've tried it... it's easier to knock something because we choose not to do it rather than accept it, move on or give it a go. Both Ian and Rob Semmens are some of the funniest guys I've worked with on the field and had a laugh with off the field. Everyone is out there to enjoy the footy.. let them do the same. How good is it that every game is getting boundaries? How good is it that everyone is getting Goals and Fields..? Take that on face value!:):):)

I dont have any qualms with umpires as Ive never seen one that you could categorically blame for a result. There are 100 odd minutes every week of football where every action of the players (and coaches) has a reaction, good or bad. Some people see it as an easy "out" to simply blame a decision with 2-3 minutes to go when in fact their side may have let in 5-6 goals in time on over the course of the day, turned over the footy 4 times that directly resulted in shots on goal etc etc . . . yet blame the umps when they go down by less than a kick.

Last week I ran into one of the better RDFL umps (purely my opinion) that I saw in 2009. He was actually telling me bout this whole Ballarat thing and said that at the umps AGM in October last year they were all asked as "members" to give their point of view. The majority wanted to stay umpiring purely in the RDFL only . . . . so at the end of the day it appears those sentiments have been overlooked by someone in a position of power which is disappointing.

One of Melton Centrals team rules is not to talk to the umpires, Hasn't helped so far.

I understand this point of view too.. But has the rule been followed to the letter of the law?? I would suggest not.. Every side likes to instill a team rule of not back chatting to umpires, doesn't mean that the players follow through...

Without slighting the Melton Centrals FNC... The fact is, that the side is struggling.. With this being the case, being second to the ball and outplayed, then it will certainly seem as though the umpires are going against them.. But I can almost guarantee, when on Saturday Centrals got the run of the play in the last quarter and a bit, then Centrals seemed to get the "run" of the umpiring too???

Just relax with the pot shots you take at Centrals. Lost 2 games by under a goal and lost to a very good side in Riddell. If you have'nt seen the games don't comment on the standard of umpireing in our games until you witness it first hand!!!
