I was just looking at the fixture and saw that there are still 2 more games after this weekends games. Can anyone inform me about how the finals are structured this year?

This weekend sees Riddell take on Sunbury Kangaroos for a spot in the GF. Loser of this game will play the winner of Lancefield v Diggers in the prelim next week.

It was a joke mate. surely your not that sensitive.

What was confusing? Will gladly clarify.

Its ok.. Just took me a couple of reads to work out a couple of things :D

Slight head ache at 10:30 last night, but well enough to attend mad monday festivities last night and today.

Has no recollection of the incident.

One of the fairest bumps you will see in local football, credit to Strieff who got up and played a vital part in his sides victory.

Anyone know the condition of Dawson?

I think he will be fine, He was up and running the boundary line by the end of the 1st Quarter yesterday and wanted to come back on however i understand that he was unable to answer all of the concussion test questions etc. Congrats to Sunbury for the way they played their football yesterday, They seemed a very well drilled outfit. I was very impressed with the quality of young players running around for both teams yesterday, The future of the league looks bright if these young players stay at their respective clubs:thumbsu:

He was not as bad as his bald mate.

I dunno bout that...Semmo deciding to call the game as over when he "heard" the siren that no one else in Ian Cowrie heard...was utter chaos as the diggers player continued to kick the ball towards goal where it fell short and was marker on the line by a kilmore player. But because semmo had called full time and he was wrong he brought the ball back to a dangerous position 40m out where the diggers player had his shot from. Both teams were in disbelief with diggers claiming that they had the ball when semmo blew the whistle and kilmore wanted the ball because they had marked it on the line. So semmo balls it up and finds the softest rucking free kick u ll ever see against the kilmore ruckman leaving diggers ruckman with a shot on goal...then as he s lining uo the REAL siren sounds. Luckily for us boys he pulled the kick and we scraped across the line. Justice perhaps...just can t help himself Semmo

With the first week of finals done and dusted, a couple of interesting results and great games of football.

The day kicked off in fine style at Boardman Reserve with Riddell taking on the Redbacks in the Under 18s. The Redbacks came out firing in the opening quarter taking it right up to their highly fancied opponents. In early going they had a superior attack on the football and it looked as though Riddell may have shown up expecting an easy win. After quarter time though, the Bombers were able to flick the switch and produce the football that was expected of them. Matt Vandenberg was dominant up forward while the Riddell midfield took control of the game. After quarter time the Redbacks could only manage one goal, while the Bombers controlled the tempo, running out comfortable winners.

In the other game, the Hawks, strengthened by the return of Dan Toman, Matt Sawyer and Harrison Huntley enjoyed a big win over the Burra.

The Reserves game started at a cracking tempo, both sides attacked the ball with no fear. The Kangas got on the board with an early goal through Leigh Sporle before the game turned into an arm wrestle. Both sides were handling the ball pretty well though considering what most people thought of the ground. As the quarter went on the Roos started to gain the upper hand, Garth Ploog, Sporle and Ben Hunting were proving hard for the Redbacks to handle up forward and the Roos went into quarter time with a 26 point lead.
The second quarter saw the tempo lift. The Redbacks kicked the first 2 of the quarter, Redbacks danger man Mark Dipietro was being well held by Roos defender Trevor Castagnini. Brad Cuthbert was finding plenty of the ball through the midfield for the Redbacks and they seemed to be making a run before the Roos steadied kicking two of their own including one after the siren to ruckman Steve James which kicked off a push and shove as the two sides went into the rooms for half time.
After half time the Roos came out to play, while the game still had plenty of heat in it, a 3 goal to 1 quarter gave the Roos control. Garth Ploog was sensational while Devin Powell was dominating across the half back line. The Roos midfield was slowly taking control of the game, Jackson Baddelley and Stuart Davis were getting well on top.
The last quarter was a bit of a blowout, the Roos booted 5 goals and kept Romsey goalless to run out comfortable 69 point winners. Credit to Romsey though, they gave their all, simply outclassed at the end of the day.

The game at Rockbank proved to be full of controversy as Kilmore scored a one point win with a contentious umpiring decision in the closing minutes of the game.

The highly anticipated senior match between Sunbury Kangaroos and Romsey was what everyone was at the ground to see. The excitement in the crowd was evident. They were expecting fireworks early and it is exactly what they received.
The opening contest of the game is exactly what finals football is all about. Two young stars going flat out at the contest and colliding. Unfortunately one of those two young stars was lost to the game, but both of these young guys had put their stamp on the game. After the delay the game kicked off and the Roos drew first blood through Matt Leonard. From that point on though the Redbacks controlled the quarter, they had possession of the football but just couldn't seem to use it in the front half of the ground. They kicked 6 behinds for the quarter and at least 3 shots that ended up out on the full. They had opportunity but just couldn't take it, and when Gary Moorcroft was sent from the ground and reported for striking, yes, it was soft, but it was there, did it warrant a send off, probably not, but thems the breaks. The Roos were able to hold strong and regain the tempo of the game to go into quarter time leading 1.1 to 0.6.
The start of the second term was all the Kangaroos, with Moorcroft still off the ground for the first 10 minutes of the quarter, the Roos took full advantage. They booted 6 goals to 1 early, the only Redbacks goal coming from a turnover, the Roos looked well in control before a couple of "unfortunate" umpiring decisions turned the game once again. A goal to Brad Mitchell and two to Luke Carroll, one after the half time siren, had the momentum swinging back to the Redbacks as they forced their way back into the game. The Roos with a 12 point lead at the main break.
The third quarter early was again an arm wrestle early. Both sides were working overtime for that break in the game that would make the all important difference. This is the moment in the game that the Roos went to another level and left the Redbacks behind. Leigh and Mark McInerney showed the form that in recent years has made them so important to the Roos line up. Leigh in particular lifted, both his leadership and ability to win the football were vital in that period through the third term. Dan Gregory and Matt Leonard were causing all sorts of headaches for the Redbacks defense and whenever the ball went to the Meacham/Kairns match up, Meacham looked dangerous. The Roos booted 5 goals for the term, before a late goal to Smith-Whiting gave the Redbacks some hope, the Roos though, took a commanding 37 point lead into the last quarter.
The Redbacks threw everything into the opening minutes of the last quarter, when Meacham marked only 20 metres out though all seemed lost, but he missed and the Redbacks still gave themselves hope. They got themselves on another mini roll, and when Moorcroft goaled the margin had been reduced to 23 points. But the Roos settled, and with goals to Meacham and then Jamie Cuffe the game was done and dusted and the Roos had qualified for a semi final game and a chance at a grand final for the first time in the club's history. A satisfying performance for the Roos and a disappointing end to what was a great effort by the Redbacks, making the finals after dropping their first 5 games.

Apologies to many others for the Roos, Mitch Streiff, Matt Leonard, Leigh Fishenden, Darragh McGovern and Leigh McInerney to name a few.

In the other game, in what was described to me as "Deja Vu" The Burra overrun the Cats in the first week of the finals. Shane Marchewka dominating for the Burra with 5 goals. Will this be the end of the Brendan Lee era at the Cats.

What I learned from yesterday's finals.
  • The Kangaroos are in the best position of the clubs history when it comes to finals. A crack at Riddell after a win like the one on the weekend is a great result.
  • The Burra could quite possibly be rubbing their hands together. A final against Lancefield at Rockbank is a bonus, the Burra are well and truly up and about.
  • Macedon just cannot play Diggers Rest in the first round of finals, 3 years in a row the Burra have simply dominated and outmuscled the Cats.
  • The Tigers would not at all be comfortable about playing the side that just knows how to play finals football and at Rockbank.
Big week in RDFL football... Can't wait, starting with the Bowen Medal tonight!!! :thumbsu:

saturday at lancefield riddell v sunbury 1st and 2nds 18's riddell v macedon
sunday at rockbank lancefield v diggers kilmore v macedon kilmore v woodend

I was under the impression wallan was hosting a final this weekend?? Has this been changed...maybe due to ground condition?
Is what has been said above 100% official?

Wouldn't mind getting across to see the riddell vs sunbury clash if its at lancefield...should be an absolute ripper!

Yes matches are 100% confirmed, Saturday @ Lancefield and Sunday @ Rockbank, officials inspected Wallans ground on Sunday and with predicted rain this week made the decision for the switch.

I think the league may need to revise what goes on the front of next years finals records. 3 years in a row now they have had the Bowen Medalist on the front page before the night

Congratulations Tom Waters winning a second Bowen medal beating Matt Robertson by 1 vote
