Final Score -
Romsey - 11. 13. 79. Def' Sunbury - 10. 12. 72.
My votes -
3. - Mitch Farmer. (Romsey)........Turned the Game !
2. - Jamie Cuffe. (Sunbury)..........Just defies age !
1. - Brad Mitchell. (Romsey)........A solid four quarters !
"Feralville" had Blake Hendo BOG by a mile!! A bloke who played in the ruck all day at 6"1 against 2 big fellas in fish and cuffe ......... deserved it. Agree with the others. From Romsey point of view, great last 10 minutes
Yeah, tried hard all day, but in the context of the game was pretty inafectual, imho.
Sunbury clearly dominated the rucking contests. (as they should have)
Cuffe is a freak ! He rucks, he roves, he scouts the packs, he crumbs, he tackles, he blocks, he shepards & he kicks goals. All the good "TEAM" things..... Not too bad, for a bloke in his 50s !!!
And say what you like about "Feralville", I really think it played its part in getting the Redbacks up in that tight last quarter................ Call me old fashioned but I love the roar of the "Natives" (no matter how "Blue" it may be). I think they call it atmosphere !!!
Romsey have a real "Bay 13" cauldron thing going on over there. And whatsmore I think the Umpires respond to it !
Its by no means a criticism of the men in white, orange, green...... or PINK ! I think its just human nature. The huge noise they hear, roars "Ball"..... & they get caught up in it. Only really in the 50/50s though. And only really in the last quarter when the crowd got involved.
Actually (as an impartial observer) I think Troy & Nobes did an excellent job yesterday. And kudos to the association for what seems so far this season to be a policy of rostering our "Best" umpires to officiate in our best weekly matches. Well Done.![]()
I agree Sunbury were clearly dominant in the ruck contests all day, and for most of the game the centre clearances for that matter.
Hard fough contest all day, as was expected, not a lot between these two teams at the end of the day.
Undoubtedly the match was decided by 50 metre penalties resulting in goals to Romsey. No matter whether they were warranted or not, they were the difference.
My votes: 3. Bishop Sunbury. 2. Farmer Romsey. 1. J. Cuffe Sunbury
So reading between the lines, you are saying the umpires cost Sunbury the game ?
Are you ???
Once again as an impartial observer..... I saw quite a few 50m penalties throughout the game. To both sides ! Although, from over the boundary it appeared that the Umpires were being extremely consistent with these, in that - When the umpires blew their whistle & paid a free kick, the offending player would give the Ump' a verbal spray......Then straight away the umpire would pay a 50m.
Its NOT rocket science ! You just keep your trap shut & cop it sweet !
It appears that Romsey were the quicker learners (or better coached) than Sunbury with cutting it out of their game after the long break.
Someone commented to me on here a few weeks ago that Sunbury were better disciplined these days. I joked that it was because they had gotten "Rid" of a couple of well known trouble making brothers.
The fact is, after playing Sunbury a couple of weeks ago I came away thinking quite the opposite. In that round 3 win by Sunbury over Riddell, Sunbury gave away several 50 meter penalties & infact Riddell kicked 2 goals from one of them without the ball even going back into the centre. Their lack of discipline on that day probably kept Riddell in the contest way longer than they deserved to be.
Now after seeing the Kangas twice this season the way I see it is, Sunbury STILL have a discipline problem ! They have a couple of loose cannons out there that can & probably will be exploited. And they definitely will, come finals time.
Sure it can be addressed & fixed. But it sure does not augur well for them when ONE of those mouthing off & giving away the 50 meter penalties is their Coach !!!
If they are "Real" smart, they will jump on it "Real" quick.
Not not at all, just saying the 50 metre penalties were the difference. Not saying they were the fault of the umpires for one minute, but if they do not occur the result is clearly a Sunbury win (no back chat if that's what they were given for = 2/3 less Romsey goals). I agree, best to keep the trap shut !
My other point was that in agreeance with you, the Sunbury rucks were clearly dominant on the day v Romsey.
I agree that in the Riddell game Sunbury kept Riddell in the game, and should have won by more !
So the moral of the story is, keep it shut and get on with the business !
As a footy fan on the day, it was frustrating that the Roos gave away so many 50 metre penalties on the day, four resulting in goals.. three in the last term.. they were all there but crickey.. one wonders what might have happened if these penalties weren't given.. it was a tight hard contest between the two reigning grand finalists.. but in all, I think we lost track of the 50s at about 7 or 8..

sunbury looked like they are fielding a stronger side than they did last year. they showed a lot of promise early. but they were totally shut down after half time.blake henderson was clearly the most influential ruckman on the ground too. it is not just about tapping the ball its what a player contributes around the ground as well. he was even better saturday than he was in last years gf. romsey have around ten new players to the team also and when they come together later in the year should be a hard side to stop. i also agree with other previous comments that sunburys discipline was ordinary and whether that affected the final result or not doesnt change my view that once romsey worked out how sunbury play,it was all romsey after half time. i just hope romsey stop giving teams such a big head start before they decide to blow them away
Don't give away the 50 metre penalties = different result !
What were your votes Chris ?
The coaching staff were under strict instructions to leave him on the H/Back line, sounds like they were well coached!Good effort from the 18s last night.
Was a great night for it, a little cold and slippery which made for a great contest. Was a really solid contested game of football, but the Ballarat boys were clearly more effective below the knees which allowed them to play the game on their terms, once they had the ball in hand, they were able to spread and were more effective with their ball use than our boys, Ballarat tended to kick their goals in two's, the scoreboard reflected probably a more lopsided result than the game showed as most of it was a contested arm wrestle.
A couple of stand outs for the RDFL were Ben Schraven who I thought was clearly the RDFL's best player on the ground, he was one of the few that was clean below the knees and used the ball well around the ground, bar in front of goal, the young fella had a couple of shots but didn't capitalize, he probably could have kicked 3 for the night. Nathan Blair was effective off the half back line, would have liked to see him move to the half forward line after half time when it became clear that the RDFL were breaking down there. But Blair was providing great drive across there. Phil Shaw looked dangerous at stages, but his field kicking probably let him down a little, all in all, plenty of positives for many of these young guys to take back to club footy, hopefully they all picked up something from the experience, especially the advantage that can be gained from keeping your feet and picking the ball up one grab below the knees.![]()
As a person who loves to watch local football but is new to watching RDFL games, I was a little weary about what I had seen in one of the games over the weekend. I popped by the Kilmore v Rockbank game and noticed a young boy who barely looked to be older than 14, do the boundary umpiring in the seniors.
Now before i get on with it, i would firstly like to applaud the young lad in having a crack and doing something that most people consider a chore. And by all means i will not have a go at the kid or anything that is out of his control or ability. He worked hard and was honest in what he thought.
But it concerns me that the RDFL would let this kid, or any young kid umpire in a seniors game when there is a great potential for them to make mistakes(as you would expect). There were multiple instances where he could not keep up with the speed of the game and couldnt cover sufficient ground. The downside to this was that there were times where the ball had gone out and the whistle hadnt been blown, or the ball would be clearly in (half a metre minimum) and it was called out by a kid that was 100metres away and stood 4 feet tall.
It was a close game and couldve gone either way at some stages. I would hate to see something missed at the end of the final qtr that can turn a game on its head. This is meant to be a reputable league but this in a SENIORS game does take away a little bit of its credibility.
I would understand for a reserves game to have a young umpire as for the lack of umpires going around, but not sure if i can understand for a seniors game.
Does anyone know if there is a criteria to umpire a SENIORS game?
Thanks for your post.
The Riddell Umpires is always working hard to improve their group and will attempt to put the best umpires in senior football. However as you pointed out, depth of our panel is something that can always be improved (as I am sure it can be at most clubs).
However is saying that you did not paint the whole picture in your post. At the Rockbank vs Kilmore game there was in fact 3 boundary umpires doing the game so for at least 2q's (if not 3) there was 2 umpires on the one side.
It was also blowing a 8 goal breeze, so my guess is that you could have Cathy Freeman at the game and there still would be been occasions when the boundary umpire would be behind play. Remember they can get assistance from the Goal and Field Umpires if that is they case.
My last point is that we had no complaints on the day about the boundary umpires.
As much as we take constructive criticism on board, your post seems to be focusing on such a small aspect of the RDFL. There are much bigger fish to fry than how old (or tall) a boundary umpire is.
For your information the criteria for all our umpires to do Senior footy is the best available for that week will be in seniors.![]()
Nicely saidLets hope this youngster can go all way if they wish to..
