two more things the boundary umpire in question is actually 16yo and also due to an illness forcing one boundary to pull out late of his game these three boundaries were running their second game of the day i thought that the boys on the day put in a great effort cosidering

Like i said, applauded the kid for his work and participation (no matter what the conditions were) he did the best possible job any 16yo could do, and yes im sure he will make a fine umpire at senior level if he keeps it up. Just wanted to know if there was a certain standard or experience that umpires needed to fill before they could umpire a senior game following what i saw over the weekend. Harrison Hyundai Seniors - Round 6

After a week off from the previews I return to impart some half witted and useless information on to you all...

Diggers Rest (1st, 5-0) Vs Broadford (9th, 1-4)
The Roos travel to Diggers Rest to tackle the premiership favorites in what is going to be a huge test for Matty Finch and his young side. The Burra have been flying in the early part of the year and the game style they are playing is being lauded amongst the RDFL community. With a much more attacking style of game spearheaded by Brent Tuckey, having a big forward that can take contested marks makes all the difference, it has also allowed Dan McCabe, Steve Ruane and the midfield to get amongst the goals.
The Roos have had a shaky start, but picked up their first win 2 weeks ago against the Hawks. They were able to keep Macedon to under 10 goals last week but it seemed to come at the expense of their own scoring as they managed only the one goal. The Roos do have the players to kick goals, so might need to weaken another area slightly to allow someone to go forward and be the much needed target inside 50.
Tip:
A trip to Diggers is always a tough one, and the Roos will find out it is one of the toughest trips this year. With so many options and the ability to spread from a contest, the Burra will be too much for the Roos to shut down.
Diggers Rest by 60 points.

Woodend/Hesket (10th, 1-4) Vs Lancefield (12th, 0-5)
This game could almost be the match of the round. It will be the play by play debut of this humble RDFL contributor, so tune into 100.7 for all the action and more than likely some dead air time at stages.
The Hawks have been competitive so far early in the season, but will be desperate to get their 2nd win on the board, especially at home at the back to Woodend day. With a young list being guided by arguably the best teaching coach in the competition, the young Hawks have already started to receive some plaudits around the league, in particular young ruckman Matthew Quinn. I am looking forward to seeing many youngsters that I watched in 18s football as well as some 2s football run around tomorrow, like Max Ambler and Ric Cerminara.
Rumor has it that a couple of past premiership players will return to the Tigers line up tomorrow, which will be fantastic for the young players on the list. The Tigers were also able to sign ex Romsey forward Ben Richmond who will play a complimentary role to John Baker inside forward 50. The Tigers will have close to the strongest side they have fielded since the 1st Semi Final 2 years ago.
Tip:
This is a battle of some fantastic youngsters going around, hopefully the crowd are treated to an outstanding contest of young men. The added experience to the Tigers line up will mean that the Hawks wont have it all their own way, but with home ground advantage, they should be able to get the job done.
Woodend/Hesket by 7 points

Rockbank (7th, 3-2) Vs Riddell (5th, 3-2)
This match has long been a danger game for the Bombers, they don't often enjoy the trip out to Ian Cowie Reserve.
The Rams have started to turn a few of the critics after a stellar start to the season, capped off by the win against Kilmore last week. Two weeks ago though, they were thumped by Macedon, so the question will linger, can they perform against the top sides of the competition. Tomorrow they will be eager to prove that they can. Matthew Bellingham provided a target up forward last week with 4 goals and will need to be on top of his game this week, especially with Silvester roaming around the half back line.
The Bombers are gearing into the season, a comfortable win last week saw the return of a couple of key players return from injury, and hopefully for the Bombers a few more will be back in the near future. This is a good test for where the Bombers are at physically after a slow preseason and start to the year.
Tip:
With the key players back into the Bombers side, they have had a big past fortnight and I would expect them to continue that on here, but with a little more resistance than the last 2 weeks.
Riddell by 38 points

Melton Central (8th, 2-3) Vs Romsey (4th, 4-1)
It's been quite the fall for Centrals, from 1st to 8th in 3 weeks and a massive game against the reigning premiers at home this week.
The performance of two weeks ago was unacceptable and the emphatic loss at home to the Magpies last week couldn't have been much better. Centrals need to bounce back and need to do it now before the season that promised so much 3 weeks ago slips into oblivion. The problem Centrals face is that it is the same old names popping up. I said recently that Brett Payne needs to step up and he had a solid game last week. Young Jono O'Brien continues to perform, but too much is left to too few.
The Redbacks season is just starting to kick into gear, but can somebody tell these guys that the game starts at 2pm and not 3pm??? It seems to take 2-2 and a half quarters for the Redbacks to wind up, but when they do, it is great to watch. Had a conversation with a fellow RDFL supporter last week about whether or not Matt Davidson was the best player in the league, or the most valuable. Personally, I think he can mount a case for both. This supporter even went as far as wanting to look into adoption so that he could go and watch his adopted son over his actual son
Tip:
Tough ask for Centrals, the Redbacks are pretty much full strength now and will be looking at ways to curb the early lapses. Its going to be a long day for Centrals
Romsey by 80 points

Kilmore (11th, 0-5) Vs Macedon (3rd, 4-1)
Who would have thought at the start of the year that the Blues would be 0-5 going into this game and conceivably, with a big performance from the Tigers, could be sitting dead last after this week. To say that Kilmore has been disappointing to date would be an understatement, but they will continue to work at bouncing back. Going 0-6 here though will just about put an end to their finals hopes. Similar to Broadford, it seems that the Blues just lack a key to kick to up forward, they tend to share the goals around between the midfielders, but they can't find that person to kick 5 or 6 in a match that could possibly see the result turn. It might be that the key midfielders such as Brent Gordon and Shane Jacobs need to rotate out of full forward and take some responsibility on board to be that key target inside 50 that they so desperately lack. The Blues have young midfielders that are capable of winning the ball, so these two have an opportunity to provide that leadership and change on the ball between each other out of the square.
The Cats are in fine touch again early in the season. Despite some nasty injuries, they have been able to find guys to step up into key positions and play a big role. Kris Preston has had an impressive start to the season as a key target inside 50, while James Wright continues his good form through the middle of the ground. With Ash Fleming out of the side, it is the guys like Preston and Pete Markworth that need to continually step up to fill the void, and to date, they are doing it nicely.
Tip:
Kilmore lose and it's end of their finals hopes. This should be game of the round, so hopefully for the Blues fans, they get to see some of that potential start to shine through this week. But on form, it is hard to see that happening. The Cats are playing too well, and are one side, that if you allow them to transition and not work defensively, you will be out of the game before you see it coming.
Macedon by 28 points.

Match of the Round
Wallan (6th, 3-2) Vs Sunbury Kangaroos (2nd, 4-1)
Only a game separates these two going into tomorrow's game, and the Magpies performances at home in recent years will give them the confidence to take it up to the Roos.
Coming off a big win last week against Centrals, the Magpies have been performing pretty well. Most impressive has been the form of the young players in the line up. RDFL Interleague captain and Best on Ground Ben Schraven has had an excellent start to the year, small midfielder Blake Hooper has been in everything, as has big Harry Trotman and forward Josh Barber. The Magpies have been able to bring these young guys through and it has been a real positive for the club, especially the way they have been performing. It's good to see that not everything is being left to the same guys every week. Poorter has been able to be the key forward target that the Magpies have missed in recent years which will allow Dave Cornish to get free ball if he works hard enough.
The Roos will be on a bit of a downer after last week. The game was a ripper and the Roos were right in it and in reality were the better side on the day, but that doesn't help if you are not in front when that final siren sounds. The Roos clearly have a minor tweak to make on the discipline front, back chatting umpires and silly shoves that aren't going to impact the game need to disappear. The Roos need to start controlling what they can control, and that is their performance. Let everyone else get on with whatever it is they have to do. In saying this, the Roos were very impressive in stages. Shane Bishop was impressive, but needs to be dangerous with his disposal. I really like the work of Tie Cuffe in the middle, he is so clearly underrated by opposition sides, but his workrate and ability to read the ball is exceptional, he is another that if he gets his kicking right, he will be very hard to stop. The Roos have a very well balanced team, it is just the tweaking that Jamie Cuffe and Chris Meacham need to do now and they will be right in the mix for that elusive premiership.
Tip:
The Magpies have had some ripping performances at home of late, they do have a small reputation of "which Wallan will show up" though, but if they turn up to play, the Roos will have a massive challenge on their hands. In saying that, the Roos have an excellent balance of young and experience, oh, and 3 monster talls that are fantastic marks of the ball as well as a full forward that can impact the scoreboard, they might just have too many options for the Magpies to shut down.

And noticed fair amount of support cheered on the win from the Lancefield faithfull today, fair play to them, they played well today., Was great to see the original Woodend jumpers on show today, well done to Jock and co. on a great concept. Me thinks the old school Woodsy jumpers look better than the latter day poos and wee's, but who am I to argue?.

Round 6 Review

What a weekend of footy in the RDFL

Traveled up to Gilbert Gordon Oval to make my play by play radio call debut in the Woodend/Hesket Vs Lancefield contest, a game that I have to be honest, I wasn't too excited about, honestly, I was underwhelmed, but surprisingly, I was lucky enough to witness the Tigers first win since 2010 and a great contest between two sides that are building for the future. When I say great contest, it really was, both sides had some really impressive passages of play and both sides to have a base to build on.

The first quarter opened up with the Tigers doing most of the attacking. Both sides though were using the ball pretty well through the half back line and through the midfield. The Hawks seemed to be breaking down across the half forward line despite the best efforts of Jimmy Chettle, while the Tigers looked dangerous going forward and looked as though they would score every time. The forward duo of John Baker and Ben Richmond looked dangerous and were afforded the luxury of one on one contests with their opponents inside forward 50 as the Tigers midfield were able to open the game up, Dan Rebbecchi and Port Melbourne listed Jake Sutcliffe were dominating through the middle of the ground for the Tigers while Matt Quinn was everywhere for the Hawks.
Qtr Time: Lancefield 3.5.23 led Woodend/Hesket 0.2.2

The 2nd quarter saw the Tigers sneak away early again through Baker and they looked to have complete control of the contest, the Hawks were having trouble getting the ball inside forward 50 but when they did young Jake Owen looked to be the most dangerous forward. He had an opportunity to get into the game but sprayed his shot wide. Chris James was in everything across the half back line for the Tigers, his ability to put physical pressure on the ball carrier as well as win his own ball was vital to the Tigers. Finally the Hawks started to look dangerous. Two goals from Jimmy Hepburn without the ball returning to the middle thanks to some ill discipline from the Tigers defenders got the Hawks back into the game as they drew to within 8 points, but two late goals to the Tigers, excellent composure from the midfield and forwards saw them head into the half time break with a good buffer.
Half Time: Lancefield 7.5.47 led Woodend/Hesket 4.2.26

The third quarter was more an arm wrestle as players from both sides started to tire. The good ball use and link up displayed earlier in the game started to disappear as the turnovers through the middle of the ground started to sneak in. Neither side were able to overly capitalize on the errors though, the Hawks managed only the one goal for the quarter and continued to break down going inside forward 50, especially when Owen left the field with a sore ankle. Sutcliffe was again the difference in the two sides, showing his class with ball use through the middle of the ground and then rising above the pack for a massive mark in the goal square to extend the Tigers lead.
3 Qtr Time: Lancefield 9.7.61 led Woodend/Hesket 5.3.33

The final quarter meant everything to the Tigers and Sutcliffe was again the catalyst, he moved into the ruck to start the last quarter and was jumping over the top of Quinn, the Tigers were able to kick the opening goal of the quarter, Chris Burkett was in everything through the middle of the ground, but the key move was Dale Joesph into the middle, his experience in the clinches was vital along with Jay Shewan, the inclusion of these two Premiership players was a massive boost for the Tigers. The Hawks tried everything in the final term to come back, but every time they scored, the Tigers responded. Burkett kicked 2 final quarter goals and when Ben Richmond marked and goaled from 30 metres out the Tigers had their first win in a very long time.
Final Score: Lancefield 14.10.94 def Woodend/Hesket 11.5.71

What I learned in Round 6

• The hard work for the Tigers is starting to pay off, they have some good young talent and will only improve. Chris and Matt Burkett, Baker, Richmond, James etc will take the Tigers a long way.
• Doona was finally rewarded for perseverance, the Blues proved they can match it with the top sides and get a result.
• Great to have a season where no side will go through without picking up a win.
• Diggers Rest stand alone as the league leader, big games in the next month though, Sunbury this week and Romsey Round 10.

Harrison Hyundai Seniors - Round 7

Broadford (11th, 1-5) Vs Kilmore (10th, 1-5)
Big Footy's own Doona heads back to his former stomping ground for the first time in his new role as head coach at the Blues as these two rivals meet in possibly the most important game of the season for both individually.
The Roos have been competitive so far this year on the back of their midfield and will look to gain the upper hand there again this week. But it's no secret that the Roos have struggled to find someone to impact the scoreboard, at least enough to give them that extra competitiveness against the leading teams. The leading goal kickers for 2012 are Daniel Burcul and Michael Edwards with 6 majors each and as a club they have slotted 37 goals in total, league leading Goal Kicker Chris Meacham has 35 himself. The Roos might be advantaged by a bit of rain about, making this a low scoring contest though.
The Blues finally got that long awaited win on the board last week with the upset of Macedon. While that result was fantastic for the club, it could also turn ugly. Failing to back a win like that one up will be devastating for the club and will certainly end their finals hopes. The Blues have performed pretty well against the top sides they have faced so far this year, but their effort and output against other sides lingering at the lower half of the ladder has been terrible. The players need to show up here, or they will be on the end of another shocking loss.
Tip:
This will be a very contested and tough game of football, contested footy will win the day so the team that goes the hardest for the longest will have an advantage. With they way they have performed this year, there is every right to pick Broadford, but the Blues might get them in an upset.
Kilmore by 5 points.

Macedon (4th, 4-2) Vs Melton Central (8th, 2-4)
This week signals a big opportunity for Centrals against a depleted Cats line up. The Cats were beaten in a nail biter last week against the Blues and will be desperate to bounce back, but the conditions are going to make this a very interesting contest, Centrals have always been a good contested side and the wet weather will certainly affect the Cats ability to break the ball into open space and get running. Centrals have had a rough trot after some big losses and will be keen to hit this game full of steam.
Tip:
The Cats probably just have enough class, but Centrals have an opportunity this week, then again, they had an opportunity a few weeks ago against the Bombers.
Macedon by 18 points

Romsey (3rd, 5-1) Vs Rockbank (7th, 3-3)
This week is a danger game for the Redbacks who come up against the hard working Rams who are earning more and more respect every week. The Rams were solid again last week against the Bombers and the Redbacks are facing some injuries.
Romsey are travelling nicely though and sit 5-1 and are primed to move up the ladder.
Tip:
Romsey too strong at home, but the weather makes this a danger game.
Romsey by 20 points

Lancefield (12th, 1-5) Vs Wallan (6th, 3-3)
Again, the context of this game took a different path after the performance of the Tigers last week. They have two talented forwards capable of kicking goals and a midfield that has been injected with experience. If I was coaching against the Tigers I would be checking the VFL website to see if Port Melbourne have a game this week, because Jake Sutcliffe is a real danger to any opponent.
The Magpies have been doing the job, winning games they should so far this year to put them in the box seat for 6th. But they need to continue to do so and games like this one are dangerous, they are only 2 games clear of bottom spot, so they just need to get out of Lancefield with the 4 points.
Tip:
Big game for the Tigers, can they win back to back games, this one at home. It's a big ask, the Magpies just.
Wallan by 10 points.

Riddell (5th, 4-2) Vs Woodend/Hesket (9th, 1-5)
The Hawks travel to Riddell attempting to bounce back from a disappointing loss last week at the hands of the Tigers. The Hawks have plenty of great young talent, but need them all performing every week to push their opposition. The Bombers are travelling nicely, they picked up a good win last week against the Rams and will be looking to back it up with several of their key players starting to return.
Tip:
Riddell too much talent.
Riddell by 40 points.

Match of the Round
Sunbury Kangaroos (2nd, 5-1) vs Diggers Rest (1st, 6-0)
The battle for top spot between these two bitter Calder rivals and it will be a ripper.
The Roos bounced back with a great win against the Magpies last week, with their opponents saying the Roos were the best side they had played. There is no doubt that this year, the Roos are far better balanced across the field and the recruits that have come into the side have had an impact and the big guys for the Roos have proven tough to stop so far.
The Burra are flying and sit atop the RDFL ladder undefeated, this week they face their biggest challenge to date (although they did demolish the Bombers). The Burra have an excellent game style and most importantly a key forward that draws the ball. The unselfish players at the Burras are well suited to this because Tuckey attracts extra defenders, leaving the changing midfielders and smaller forwards free inside 50. The Kangaroos will need to be on their toes and ensure that the Burra don't get too much free football inside forward 50.
The biggest thing for the Roos will be putting the ball inside 50 to dangerous positions, they have Chris Meacham leading the league goal kicking, but he could easily have many more with more dangerous balls going forward. If the Roos can be more direct to the goal front 30 metres out, they have several very good small forwards that will get plenty of opportunity to score, especially if it is wet and slippery.
Tip:
With the weather conditions, this should be an enormous contest between two sides that should finish top 3. The result could go either way, but I lean toward Diggers based solely on the games I have seen so far.
Diggers Rest by 1 point.
