Regardless of how the result came about, congratulations to Sunbury Kangaroos. It has been a long time coming and well deserved. The club has worked hard to get this result and all the committee & players deserve a pat on the back. What a great weekend for grass roots footy - 2 Sunbury senior teams in different leagues winning premierships.

Any call made or not made during the game or goal scored instead of a point, or first option taken by the ball carrier rather than second guessing themselves would influence the outcome of any game. Everyone interprets the game and its rules differently and no one person can claim to have seen every free kick or penalty that was there. Fact of the matter is, Romsey lost and Sunbury won, no amount of talk will change that. Congrats to both sides on making it to the Granny and well done to Sunbury on the win.

The 2012 RDFL grand final will definitely go down as one of the most talked about GF's in RDFL history. The crowd had seemed to thin out a bit during the last quarter and those people would no doubt be regretting that decision today.

Overall I thought it was an average game to watch with mistakes from both teams but Romsey seemed to control play for the majority of the game with the only real interest in the game being that the margin was only 3-4 goals and maybe Sunbury could kick some quick goals to get close. The last 10 minutes was pretty amazing and no one really saw it coming with the way Romsey seemed to be in control.

With the amount of play Romsey had, the quality of player in their side and Sunbury's inability to hit targets, poor goal kicking and poor movement of the ball into their forward line during the first three quarters, Romsey should have been plenty in front during the last quarter and Sunbury would never have had the chance to even get close. In the end Romsey seemed to try to save the game and this gave Sunbury the chance to win it.

I thought there were several key periods of the game that contributed to Sunbury staying in the game
  • When Kairns went off it did seem to upset Romsey back structure
  • Jamie Cuffes thrid quarter where he sat in the hole and took plenty of marks to stop Sunbury from getting blown away during this period. Where was the Romsey plan to prevent him from doing this??
  • The loss of Dawson with what appeared to be a shoulder injury from a minor tackle took away that x factor for Romsey.
  • The send off of the Sunbury player seemed to spark Sunbury a bit and played their best football of the match during this period which dould have proved costly given the extra number Romsey had on the field for fifteen minutes
  • Romsey seemd to go away from using their skills to link up and run in the last quarter to bombing it out of the backline which suited Sunbury as they sat Fishendon and others across the centre and they kept pumping it back into the forward area.

To say Sunbury didn't deserve the premiership is disrespecting the Sunbury Kangaroos club. They beat Romsey several times during the year and the finals so a win in the GF was not an unlikely event and maybe they were the best team of the year.

The spectators who came on the ground after the game and caused some havoc have sullied the reputation of the Romsey Football club and the RDFL and people need to control themselves to prevent what was some pretty ugly scenes from getting further out of control.

The umpiring is obviously the main talking point and each person will have their own views on it depending upon who you follow, where you were standing at the ground and how many drinks you had consumed. Whilst decisions were made that gave shots at goal to Sunbury late in the game what ultimately cost Romsey was it stopped running, went defensive and gave Sunbury the the chance to stage that comeback.

Maybe the RDFL can be proactive in this and put the last few minutes of the GF on the website so that people could see the finish and make up there own mind on the decison making of both the players and umpires during this periods.

Best and least biased post in the last 24 hours.

Who would you give your 3 2 and 1 to footytripper ?

I was critical of the umpiring, but, I didn't take anything away from the Kangaroos, but, the thing I thought was worse than anything was the way a Romsey player got knocked to the ground from behind by a supporter of the kangaroos, that was absolutely disgusting. I will never forget that, I'm sorry that was just absolutely disgusting. And if I ever get a video I will post it so everyone knows who it was. It was worse than the idiots that started the brawl in the middle. You don't do that to players who have played their hearts out and lost. A very bad attitude!!!

3 Votes Jamie Cuffe - saved the game for Sunbury in the third qaurter and kept the scoreline from being blown out and then went forward in the last term and became a big target for them.
2 Votes Phil Romeril - easily Romseys best and played a great game
1 vote Daniel Gregory - led the defence well and rebounded well from the back line and helped keep Davidson relatively quiet.

T.Cuffe played well and had a great third quarter but was not the standout over four quarters that the other three were.

Maybe umpire22 can answer this one. Why was Tim Rath dropped to the reserves GF and replaced by Troy when everyone regards him as one of the best in the comp and there was nothing but praise for the 3 umps after there efforts in the prelim.
Did i hear right that a umpire was umpiring a grand final that his son was a part of on the weekend ?

Well said mate.. definitely the best unbiased answer of the lot .. the game was close and emotional and we got the heart stopper that every footy fan deserved.. we gave our B.O.G to Ti Cuffe.. a great hard worker all day and certainly has a big future ahead of him.. a superstar in the making, if he isn't already..

Chris listening to the game on your radio channel, you guys were scathing towards the umpiring, reeding your comments now it sounds like you are saying that Sunbury deserved the win and the umpiring was above board, so tell us all, what were you all going on about on the radio and what was your take on the game, because you have totally confused me.

Lol, you romsey "kids" make me laugh! Do you really think if an umpire was going to cheat to give the game away he'd have waited until the last 7-8 minutes when they were 21 points down? But you keep it up, by blaming the umpire you accept no accountability, won't actually look at what you did wrong, nothing will change and it will happen again...good luck with that :)

Well done Champ, you got the winning margin right in the Sunbury v Romsey match !

Go Kangas RDFL Premiers 2012

And only a goal off in the 18's ;)
At the end of the day Sunbury and Romsey have both been the league stand-outs over the last 2 seasons and with how close the GF's in the last two seasons have been its almost "fair" that they have a flag a piece imo.

Good to see you really believe in sportsmanship you kangaroo people, not one comment. And if you were an umpire and were going to try and change the result, I really don't think you'd do it till the end when it counts, because until the last quarter nothing matters. So whoever made that comment is an absolute idiot! I see in todays Macedon Weekly Romsey might take it to the AFL Vic. Hope they do, it wont change the result, but, it may change the standard of umpiring. Once again the 3 umpires in the Prelim. didn't do a thing wrong and either did the other two umpires last Sunday. Just can't understand why the best weren't umpiring the GF! Don't believe in anyone's theories, just believe it was suspect, and if the RDFL wanted everything above board, that 1 umpire wouldn't have been umpiring after all the complaints throughout year, then none of this would be happening. And if Romsey do leave the league, don't worry guys, it will be one of your teams next time that's targeted. Don't care whether you thought Romsey should have won or not, just for once, look at the big picture, and widen your narrow views. I daresay the radio was told to calm the waters otherwise they wont get the matches next year. You now have the Ballarat fl running you, get use to it :)

I would be interested in knowing the player involved, I was speaking with somebody that got pushed into a Romsey player after the game and was then looked at, as if it were deliberate.
But.. if that wasn't the incident, i would have to agree that it is disgusting to even approach a player after a game when his heart is bleeding. The SKFC has become better than that and would be ashamed if true.

I doubt it very much that Romsey would seriously be thinking about leaving the comp. What comp would they go to?

CarltonOnly, the reason that umpire Troy Jones didn't show his face after the game was due to the intimidatory and violent behaviour displayed by several feral Romsey supporters. I can understand that supporters can get emotional with a football match like today but you guys have to get over it. As an independent observer, if, as numerous people on this forum have claimed that the umpires have cheated, let's call in the police. These claims are an absolute joke, do these people really believe the umpires have conspired to 'cheat' Romsey. Hopefully in the clear light of day, these idiots may retract their baseless, hysterical allegations
I don't think cheating is a legal issue more a moral issue my friend and feral I think not feral is hitting a sixteen year old twice and getting reported. What was the outcome of that ?????? Was Troy the one that sent him off

DONT TRY & MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING, It was accidental and the Sunbury player involved has already apolagized, nothing in it, there is no animosity towards the SKFNC from the RFNC. The RFNC congratulate the SKFNC on their first Premiership.

It really shits me when ppl get on a senior footy forum and go on about kids getting wacked and so on. For farks sake its senior footy and if the so called (kids) arnt up to playing with the big boys then they shouldnt be playing. Unfortantly the accasional wake happens in park footy, if you dont like it go play another sport or back with the under 15s......

I can promise you that not one single person of high authority had spoken to us about calming the waters.. that is an absolute fact :) If anyone did, they would've spoken to me.. :)

Who are the two blokes who have now played in senior premierships for the Sunbury Kangaroos and the Sunbury Lions ?

So what are you saying, that a person of lower authority told you that a person in higher authority told you to calm the waters? Or are you saying that a person in lower authority told someone to tell you to calm the waters? Your answer is not terribly convincing!
