The umpire bashing on here is pathetic.

I still go by the opinion that players (and coaches) have 100+ minutes a week to sway or influence a game in their sides favour. I doubt very much on any given week the "questionable" free kick count would outweigh the decision or skill making errors of a side that thinks they were hard done by in terms of umpiring.

I know I had issues with a "high" free kick count in one game this year, so what I did was exchange constructive dialogue with Michael and we worked through it.

League presentation tonight, good luck and congrats in advance to all individual and team of the year winners. I look forward to reading a run down of the night on here in the morning.

Possibly the best two posts here for quite some time! Loving it! Tonight will be exciting :)

Forget the Bowen and all the awards tonight -Who will be the Club or Individual that gets the Three, Two and One votes for the night. Time to let the hair down for some clubs, some might even be still on MAD Monday !!!

Thanks mate.. I appreciate your great support and enthusiasm.. it has made my day.. everyone has an opinion and this is a great forum to express it.. what are your thoughts on the upcoming matches this weekend? Who do you think may take the Bowen? :)

I think Riddell will win 2 of the 3. Seniors and Under 18's. Macedon two's at home will be too strong for the Bomenchero's.

I hope Tucky wins the Bowen - best player in the comp.

you are not going I woukdve thought it was a night for coachs and club officials as well.any news on your replacement yet im pretty certain frosty is going again at wallan.

Don't they name the coach of the year with the team of the year? Before the Grand Final?

No, there hasn't been a coach of the year named in the RDFL for several seasons.

Id like to nominate Jamie Elliott. Had the wood over every other coach this season including Serg Scoble. Clearly the best by a mile. Well done Jamie.

Yeah one way to look at it - but would you rate Micahel Voss a better coach than Chris Scott or Brendan McCarthy better than Michael Malthouse?

I firstly looked at the top 6 teams - and of those which coach got the most improvement out of their team. Seeing as only Riddell improved their position in the top 6 from last year to this year I went for their coach.

I think the Umpiring this season has been pretty damn good on the whole. Yes, there has been the odd mistake here & there (like the 2 deliberate out of bounds decisions against Riddell yesty that delivered Romsey 2 very dubious soft free kicks !) but otherwise the Umpiring has been of a very high standard as opposed too years gone by. I think the Umpires are getting it right in the majority of cases. There isn't any Grandstanding anymore, & you always get a good performance out of the Umpires when you don't seem to notice them in the context of the contest. This has been my experience so far this season.
Keep up the good work guys............ I notice it when we don't notice you !!! :thumbsu:

Whilst I'm feeling in such a benevolent mood, I'd like to give my old sparring partner Yeendy a bit of a rap.
He deserves it !
For a few weeks now I've listened to his commentary of the game on 100.7 Highlands FM & I must say the lad has improved significantly. Chris's call of the game is becoming knowledgeable & intuitive. He is changing gears in all the right places & is naturally able to convey to the listener a genuine sense of excitement when the contest warrants it.
I had several friends at the game yesty & they in fact commented how great it was to watch the game & follow it & fill in the blanks on the radio at the same time.
Well done champ..............................................you have a great head for radio too pal !!!

Yeah, well done O.Ump some fantastic feedback there. Can you pencil us in for your services for the rest of the season please ??? ;)
I too like your thoughts about NOT penalising the player going for the ball. :thumbsu:
Good question too Blueboy, I also often wonder about the reasons WHY some players get yellow carded & agree whole heartedly with you that a free kick or 50m penalty SHOULD be used more often in these cases. the "Yellow Trigger" gets pulled far too often in my opinion !!!

Well if you like that Mr Orange, your gunna love this.
Here's some more of - "OMNI'S out of Body.....Umpire Experiences"

One of the Field Umpires yesty blew his whistle in anticipation of an easy Riddell mark. Riddell player spills the grab but ALL players stop dead in their tracks. Umpire comes rushing in with the Romsey players protesting that it was NOT a mark. Umpire can be clearly heard saying "Yes I know, it was my mistake, I will ball it up"
Great work by the Umpire in question. These are the type of things that can earn an Umpire......Any Umpire, a massive amount of respect from the players !!!

Also whilst I'm tossing bouquets your blokes way, I'd like to make mention of the 2 young people running the boundary yesterday. One was in fact a young girl. It can be terribly frustrating for Ruckmen & players alike at throw in's when the ball is tossed in "Off Line" or too flat ! These 2 young boundary Umps kept up with the pace of the game all day & tossed the ball in brilliantly. Good on you guys.........& gal...........Sometimes people notice when things get done RIGHT !!! :thumbsu:

Excuse me now please...........I've gotta go take my medication now before I completely go mad !!!

Amidst the general run of the mill of negative feedback on the effort of the umpires throughout the course of the year.. am I alone in believing that the standard has been pretty good this year?

Gee I just don't know what you mean with this comment CTL. I went back through all the posts this year & I gotta say there isn't really ANY Negative feedback on our Umpires & Umpiring. Actually pal to the contrary, there is plenty of positive feedback on here for the men in orange.(bumped a few examples too)
So...............I guess you are NOT alone in believing that the standard of umpiring this year has been pretty good ! o_O

Unfortunately I cant say the same for past seasons..........found this little gem by our resident hypocrite -

I will call it as I see it and the umpiring on the weekend was terrible.. ALL other games I have seen this year there has been nothing wrong with the standard of umpiring at all... So you can jump up and down all you like, someone said once before, it is only my opinion, and my opinion is, they were terrible. :D

............& my memory is bad !!!

The premiership coach.
Can't agree with you on this one IMS. Just because you happen to be fortunate enough to be coach of a successful club that can afford a talented list doesn't make you the best coach. I think the Lancefield coach this year improved his team's position on the ladder more than any of the premiership contenders. It's like when Alan Joyce was handed a powerhouse Hawthorn side in the late 80's and won a premiership as a caretaker coach when Jeans was unwell, it didn't mean he was the best coach in the competition.

Firsts well done to all the winners. I agree with Matt comments about Riddell and no real advantage finishing first, WHAT my real question is that what the fu#$ were the RDFNL board thinking when giving the rest of the finals games out. Is it true you have to be on the so called BOARD to get your club a final, Yes guys I am disappointed that ROMSEY DOES NOT HAVE A FINAL you can all see that but as we all keep saying you want the best players playing on the best grounds and surfaces in the league. We asked a question today, the response we got
today was "our netball court was not up to scratch" it is a cop out and just another excuse of bullshit... when 4 weeks ago we ask the league "did we need to do anything to the courts to host a final" their response was "no, they're fine"......IT IS A DISGRACE THAT THE ROMSEY PARK, WHICH IS IN PRISTINE CONDITION, IT'S A PICTURE AND UP TO AFL STANDARD maybe not that good.... and guys i am not saying let Romsey play there!!!!! but surely there should be a game playing there this week, the week after, or even the week after that???????whats your thoughts playing at Melton out of portables. what a disgrace for our league..... dont bring anyone from the Bendigo,Ballarat,Murray,or the EDFL....... the RDFNL would look like a laughing stock, you pack of people looking after their own backyards not the players and the spectators............................ THAT"S MY OPINION I HOPE PEOPLE CAN HAVE THERE"S DISGRACE

Unfortunately there is a perception out there that Romsey did not get a final this year as some sorta payback by the Board for last seasons Grand Final behaviour & their actions post that. Who knows ??? But it certainly looks that way in some peoples eyes & they are armed with plenty ammunition to fuel their case.
I don't know one way or the other. (Unfortunately I have to state that line now for fear of being branded a "Conspiracy Theorist" all the time !)

There are two apparent schools of thought it seems when awarding our Grand Final venues. The first is we share it around & give as many clubs as we can a share of the pie. The second is we play our Finals at our best venues. I subscribe to the latter. I believe we should do everything possible to showcase our brand in the BEST possible light.
And the bigger better venues afford us that luxury, ie - The Lancefield, Macedon & Romsey grounds are generally where we get the BEST footy played.
So to me the RDFL brand is worse off for NOT having a Final at Romsey park this season. Its a very regressive & self serving decision in my mind by those responsible & they need to come out & be up front as to why it was taken..... And it needs to be a bloody good reason & not some wishy washy bull shit petty excuse !!!

I am eagerly awaiting Saturdays Prelim' Final at the Tony Clarke MCG. The ground at the cattery should be a picture & will almost certainly throw up a very high quality free flowing standard of Footy.
Lets hope the weather Gods are kind to us.:thumbsu:

Nah I'm away but had I been home I woulda paid the $65 just to listen to Swanny, how was he and the night in general?

No idea in terms of your 2nd question, none of my business really and on the third point that's great if Trevor coaches on he did a bloody good with that young list :thumbsu:

Ah good to see Omni decided to pop back in and go at me again.. So you dug up a post from when, a couple of years ago? Last year? You must have been bored tonight. Hypocrite.. Pfft, nice to see you quoted the 3 positive posts you have made this year.

Yawn

Yawn again.

If all of this is so horrific to you... Do everyone a favour, grow a set, step up and fill a role, any role, anywhere.

Not my opinion necessarily, it just hasn't been awarded for several years after a major la la a few seasons ago when the premiership coach didn't win it.
