Not my opinion necessarily, it just hasn't been awarded for several years after a major la la a few seasons ago when the premiership coach didn't win it.
You can't please everyone. Maybe it can be something voted on by the other coaches - they would have the best idea who is hard to coach against. Having a netball coach of the year but not a football one is strange.

I agree.

The coaches voted for the last one.

I've got to questions.

1. Is there anywhere where we can download/listen to the radio calls from the last few weeks? Maybe a podcast? Yeendy??

and,

2. Will the RDFNL put up the full list if all vote getters from last nights counts on their website? It always interesting to see who polls fur each club.

Cheers!!

Wow - not sure people could be upset if the award was voted by the people in the know. Maybe the tin foil hat brigade could find some sort of league conspiracy - but that is a stretch even for them!

It's a funny one, I think the last one that was awarded was about 6 years ago and since then, it hasn't rated a mention, until last night. Not sure there had been a Netball coach of the year until this year, so it might be something to explore again into the future.

Not entirely sure if all the votes will be put on the website, I will try to find out today. I know that they are usually made available to clubs after a couple of weeks.

As for the radio calls, if you watch the games on the league website from the weekend, I am pretty sure they run the radio call through the video, for the first week of finals, the Sunbury Vs Rupo came would carry the audio.

I think it is hard to go past Scoble or Elliot isn't it.

I know Blueboy made the case for Tilley at Lancefield and he did do a fantastic job for the club to push through some excellent improvement, but so did Trevor Frost at Wallan, Skip Bray at Broadford and Leigh Sporle at Rockbank, all 3 sides were in the hunt for a spot in the top 6 in the latter stages of the season.

Riddell lost one game for the season, that included dual games against Diggers Rest and Sunbury at the very least, there is no doubting they had an outstanding season.
Diggers Rest were the only side to beat Riddell and have now qualified for the Grand Final.

How is the player of the year judged?

The coaches that responded to the Team of the Year email (per the requirements) were contacted for their vote, as were media and officials. Those votes are tallied and the winner decided.

Doona2 - who would have got you vote for coach of the year? No fence sitting......
Although my names not Doona, i think the bloke at Rockbank has done a good job, they were very disciplined this year and in the mix, it was the coach's first year & i recon that club has turned the corner.

Would be a toss up between Paul Tilley and Jamie Elliott for me, although the Rupo 3rds coach is running a close third ;)

Is it generally the most talented or expensive group that lends itself to such an award, or is it those who extract improvement out of less talented, experienced or expensive lists?

Ah good to see Omni decided to pop back in and go at me again.. So you dug up a post from when, a couple of years ago? Last year? You must have been bored tonight. Hypocrite.. Pfft, nice to see you quoted the 3 positive posts you have made this year.

Yawn

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz !.................. Did you say something ????
Oh...
Just another predictable crack at bullying I see "Almighty One", when people have an alternate view to yours or do not tow the party line !
I see you've got yourself a little sycophantic cheer squad now eager to pucker & kiss your arse at your every utterance. Must be comforting for you ?......... I guess that must come with Power & Influence !!! :p

Hey, I can bump ALL my positive posts from this year if you would like "Sadam" ???.....
There may be just enough room left on the thread...... perhaps ???

I've got it !
Lets call the "Melton Toyota Player of the Year" Award, The "Melton Toyota Jamie Cuffe Medal" ! I think its voted on by the Coaches, so it has a massive amount of real credibility & merit to it ! :thumbsu:
. :(

Time to call a truce lads!!!! I think the Melton Toyota Jamie Cuffe Medal is a great idea. Someone should seriously take that one to the league.

Unfortunately, someone here may have heard that suggestion from elsewhere and decided to make a hero of himself.

I got another one too pal.
I think the umpires should appoint one of their own to run water for the boys in Orange come match day.
It would make a priority of them when it is pretty obvious the individual Clubs water people are more concerned with their own players than considering the poor old Umpy's. It was pretty hot out there on Sunday & you could tell a couple of them were doing it hard.

Hey Omni, why don't you put your hand up for that job. I sense a bit of lovin' between you and the men in orange at the moment!

Hahahaha, nice one Blueboy. I genuinely got a little chuckle out of that one pal. :thumbsu:

Actually I really do think the standard of Umpiring this season has been pretty good on the whole (I don't know how many times I have to say that !) as opposed to past years.
As I said earlier I just think that a few of our younger guys are trying a little too hard of late to get noticed though. And the way they are doing that is to pay the softest of free kicks in the Forward 50. Sunbury got half their goals score on Saturday (4 from 8) as a direct result of soft free's inside fifty. (It nearly cost Diggers the game !) One was actually from a "Falcon" after the ball glanced off Brett Cartons fist & hit the Sunbury player in the face........Umpire caught outa position pays a free for high contact !!!
Then on Sunday the very first goal of the game was the softest of softest holding the man decisions you'd ever see, right at the top of the goal square. The problem is there was another 50 or so of those throughout the game that DONT get paid !!!
Look, we have some very very fine umpires at present. Mr Orange ump is good, Oldman Rathy goes about his business with a minimum of fuss & I really love Addam Icely's style of Umpiring. Mr O'Keefe should take a very long hard look at how Addam goes about his job because that is HOW everyone should approach the gig of Umpiring !
He lets the game take its natural flow, only pays the OBVIOUS free kicks, doesn't "grandstand" or "showboat" ........
And he is C O N S I S T E N T with his decision making. Hell ! I'd be more than happy if these three blokes got the Grand Final !
Oh,.. & whilst I'm on the subject of Mr O'Keefe, I guess I owe him a bit of an apology. There does appear in fact to be a "Twin" running around out there......& whats more he did a very very good job in the reserves match on Sunday.
But I still hold firm on that other mental defective that he gave a gig too in the first week of Finals...... Michael, he is your worst Umpire on the list BAR none. Don't just take my word for it, ask ANY breathing human being on the planet Earth !!! & they will tell you as much.

Good post Omni. I actually had a chat this evening with a RDFL umpy who stated his dislike of paying 50 m penalties where a player may have overstepped the mark by a couple of cm and gets penalised by a 50 m penalty that quite often results in a shot at goal from the goal line. For my two bobs worth I reckon they should bring in a 20m penalty for minor infringements such as this which don't have such an impact on the game. The same should count when a player queries an umpires decision without being abusive, I've seen players get 50m penalties for this indiscretion. The umpire is an official and should not be abused but should have the option of a 20m penalty for minor indiscretions.

In all due respect .. the last goal was the only one from a free kick for the Kangas .. sorry mate :( .. according to our stat sheets.. that was the only one for the game.. loving the post though, mate! :)

Add to that the fact that the contact was an accidental backhander, but still high contact.

We were BOTH wrong Chris ! But I was a little more accurate with 4 goals from free kicks to Sunbury.....It was actually three.......... Sunbury's 2nd goal at the 13 min' mark of the first quarter - soft holding the man to Ryan Pretty. Their 7th goal in the 3rd at the 21.30 min' mark - soft high contact to Joeb Ploog. And their 8th & last goal at the 19 min' mark to Phil Kauffman - "Falcon".....Ball to the face....high contact ruled !!!
The vision is right there on the web site pal if you want to correct those stats of yours ???
