Were the pots $3 there a fortnight ago? In the old days when we had to put a reason on a clearance form I once wrote $2 pots as reason to go to Avenel for a run ha ha ....so cheaper pots at Rockbank is a huge plus ;)

Anyway let's get back to the footy, my winners on week one are ....

Diggers (3 points)
Sunbury (19 points)
Romsey (14 points)

Three close encounters to get things going, regardless of the venue :thumbsu:

Listening to some of the Sunbury boys during the year you would think that margin would at least double. They are very confident against the Rupo boys.

My tips

Riddell (12pts)
Romsey (20pts)
Sunbury (30pts)

Think class will win out with the 2 knock out games. 1 vs 2 could go either way.

If you have to ask then there's no point trying to explain.
Matt why do you continually pot sides away from your local area ? You have had a history of bagging Rockbank, Centrals and Diggers Rest. Rockbank has a final and the surface will be better than most grounds in the local areas. Embrace the change from the days gone by. Last time I checked the competition stretched from Broadford to Melton. I personally feel that the coaches from both teams would be happy to play there. Also the GF is still being played at Lancefield last time I checked.

It's all down to the fact that he still believes he is relevant in this league, which was questionable at the best of times anyway.

Move on.

I've been on the record numerous times that the grand final should not be exclusively at Lancefield. I've always said the finals should be played on the best and biggest grounds – forget which club they "belong to". Play the matches at the best grounds with the best facilities and work out a way how to equalise the revenue among the clubs.

I've never bagged Rockbank, Diggers Rest or Centrals for not having great facilities – I've bagged the respective councils. All three clubs are instrumental to the RDFL.

I actually think the 3 Melton council venues (Rockbank, Digers and Melton) are 3 of the better venues if you take out the wind. Hopefully the wind stays away. They all stay firm and don't become mud pits but don't get as hard as some either. Obviously some are ahead but not as bad as some say.

Does anyone else think Lancefield lacks atmosphere? No real area for supporters to gather. Not anywhere that you would want to watch a game from anyway. Needs a wing viewing area.

Now come on big fella! what a boreing world it would be if everyone had the same opinion! I think Matt has contributed to the league significantly over the years, he use to be on SEN every Thursday night giving the RDFL rap and his newspaper reporting has been accurate most times & willing to help clubs with newspaper articles supporting the clubs, i dont always agree with him & had a few run inns myself with Matt over the years but thats life, i actually missed Matt's input to the thread when he barred himself a couple of years back, so to say he has never been relevant to the league is a bit harsh! Did i see you at Matt's going away drinks at the Romsey Pub that night?

Unfortunately, Matt decided that he would start repeatedly potting me AFTER he left for some reason.. Each to their own I suppose.

If I did then I apologise. I disagree with some of your views, of course, but I have nothing personal against you. Hopefully its water under the bridge.
Sorry ITS MY SHOW my fault....... I just want to say what a great evening the RDFNL put on last night for the junior league best & fairest count at Track side in Melton, with 300 people there it was a ripper night had by all, the future looks bright for all clubs with these kids coming through, and as i said the RDFNL should be proud of what the put on last night for all those who there.... WELL DONE :thumbsu:

2nd Elimination Final
Romsey Vs Macedon
JJ Clancy Reserve - Kilmore

Back to everyone's favorite time of the year, finals time!!!

Romsey (10 wins, 6 losses)
The Redbacks have had an interesting season on the field, suffering as many losses for the year as they have done in recent history, but as always there is another side to the story if you dig deep enough.
The Redbacks have been riddled with injuries in 2013, from the very start of the season, Mark Pedersen and the coaching staff have been forced to reach to the depths of the list at times to put a competitive team on the park, but in saying that, the Redbacks did a pretty good job overall in 2013, proving that they are still in the hunt at the business end of the season. Many of the Redbacks key players have missed bulk amount of game time in 2013, yet going through the season with just 6 losses is a big effort.

Macedon (9 wins, 7 losses)
The Cats started the year full of promise, with some handy recruits coming into the side, the early suggestions were that the Cats themselves would be right in the hunt come the business end of the season. With injuries of their own, the Cats teetered at the half way mark with losses to Wallan and Rockbank and many questioned whether the Cats had improved at all. The general feeling was that the recruits that had joined the Cats in 2013 were far too similar to the current list. But rewind back to the last time these two sides met, and the Cats turned the corner. A huge win against the Redbacks at Romsey seemed to kick Macedon into gear as they reversed the results against Rockbank and Wallan in the final couple of rounds to secure 5th spot.

Previous Games.
I was lucky enough to see both clashes between these sides this season and they were as contrasting as it gets. The Redbacks dominated the first meeting, led by Mathew Davidson who was dominant inside forward 50 along with Craig Robbins and Cam Streeter who were in the thick of every contest. The game was effectively iced at half time, with the Redbacks 6 goals in front at the main break and eventually running out 61 point winners, Davidson booted 8 goals while young ruckman David Quillerat and half back Ayden Tessari were named the Redbacks best.
In the second game at Romsey, the tables were turned, although the scoreboard didn't tell the full story. Despite the final margin, the Redbacks got back to within a goal early in the last quarter before the Cats slammed on 6 unanswered goals to run out 47 point winners, Al Meldrum booted 5 goals for the Cats whilst Darren Goodwin and James Wright (particularly in the 2nd half) were dominant. Rob Belcher shut down the dangerous Davidson.

This Game.
These two sides might be feeling a bit of confidence going in, the Redbacks started welcoming back some of their stars in recent weeks and can expect the return of a couple more for this one, whilst the Cats have been in blistering form and welcomed back an "X-Factor" type player themselves last week in Michael O'Brien.
This game really could go either way based on form and throwing in the returns to the Redbacks line up. Much will depend on how much supply the Redbacks forwards will see, as they still have one of the most potent forward set ups in the competition, with Davidson, Farmer and Dawson all capable of big bags, so much of the pressure will be placed on the likes of Cam Streeter, Craig Robbins, Shaun Austin and Shannon Green to ensure they are getting chances.
The Cats potency lies in the midfield, Darren Goodwin, James Wright and Jason Davies will play key roles alongside Michael O'Brien in ensuring that they not only give Meldrum chances, but create chances of their own. The Cats youngsters in Kernan and Clough will also have a huge responsibility to shoulder.

Key Match-Ups
Dawson Vs Arnold - Nick Arnold is the go to guy for the Cats in a stopping role, his defensive role on Dawson could be critical to this match up.
Davidson Vs Belcher - Belcher kept Davidson to the 1 goal last time, but Davidson has gotten hold of Belcher on a couple of occasions in the past, should be a cracking match up.
Streeter Vs Wright - Two players that knock up getting the ball and both are dangerous by foot, not only around the ground, but when they push forward.

Key Players
Romsey:
Blake Henderson - His value to the Redbacks is so highly under rated, both as a player at ground level and in the air, Henderson is a barometer for the Redbacks performances.
Macedon:
Ash Fleming - Much maligned at times, his importance can't be undervalued, especially if he plays a role in the ruck as he has done in recent weeks, wins the ball around the ground and his mobility can be telling.

Result:
This has the makings of a tight contest, but the Redbacks, who have been written off at stages in recent weeks, will have the depth of talent to pressure the Cats out of the game. For the Cats to win, they need to stand up to that pressure and be in the game at 3 quarter time, when the question marks over the fitness of some recently returning Redbacks might be a factor.

1st Elimination Final
Sunbury Kangaroos Vs Rupertswood
Boardman Reserve - Sunbury

Sunbury Kangaroos (13 wins, 3 losses)
Despite only weeks ago being locked in a battle with the Redbacks for 3rd place and the Burra for 2nd place, the Kangaroos managed to finish the season with only 3 losses and 3rd position on the ladder. The Kangaroos season has been consistent enough, but of their 3 losses, 2 of those were heavy losses to the ladder leader Riddell, the other to Diggers Rest in a tight contest. The Roos have put themselves in a prime position though to attack back to back premierships, but they will need to put in more dynamic performances and lift another level now that we are at the pointy end of the season.

Rupertswood (8 wins, 8 losses)
The newcomers snuck into 6th position by percentage over Centrals but their first season has been impressive. The Sharks biggest issue is the fact that despite pushing Romsey and Macedon to the limits, against the top 3 sides they were unable to make any real inroads, being comfortably beaten in their games against those sides, but the impressive thing for the Sharks was the way they were able to put away opposition in games against the sides ranked around or below, something that many sides were unable to do this season. This makes the Sharks dangerous at this time of the year, as the weather starts to clear, but the big question remains, having to face one of those top 3 sides in the first week.

Previous Games.
These two played right back in Round 1 on the same ground, when the sun was still shining and had a memorable first hitout between these newly formed rivals. As a former member of the Sunbury Kangaroos, I had waited a long time to see these two sides go at it, as our early BigFooty days was very much a spruik about how much better the Sharks were than the Roos. :p
But I digress.. The two put on a classic opening round match up with plenty of highlights and a real solid contest, with Rupo right in the game until the final stages, with the Kangaroos kicking away to record a comfortable 34 point win in the end. Jared Pretty booted 5 for the Roos, with Jamie Cuffe putting in a vintage performance in the Ruck and Anthony Leonard having a breakout game, for the Sharks, it was Leigh Brennan up forward with 4 goals, while Mitchell Gaunt provided a highlight reel for the RDFNL footy show.
The return bout at Rupo was played in difficult conditions, both sides struggled to impact the scoreboard, but the Roos were comfortable winners, with the Sharks unable to kick their only goal for the day until late in the game. Mitch Gaunt again valuable for the Sharks, whilst Darragh McGovern was named the best player for the Roos in the 15 point win.

This Game.
I don't think it could have worked out better for the rivalry that these two sides, meet in the first week of finals, in a do or die match up, in the town that both are based. This is no doubt going to be a cracking contest from the first bounce. Rupo have improved over the course of the season, getting valuable experience in the style of football played in the competition, whilst the Kangaroos will no doubt be extremely keen to respond to those that made the call that this years premiership was now only a 2 horse race. For the first time since the top 6 introduction, when Diggers Rest defeated Macedon in the first week and made the Grand Final from 6th spot, there is a feeling around that maybe this could be the year that the 6th placed team has their best chance. Several Sharks have had brilliant seasons including Rising Gun Todd Podolczak, Mitch Gaunt and the underrated David Morrice, while the Sharks will be looking to the leadership of Leigh Brennan as their key target.
The Roos are still right in the mix, despite their loss last week and will be looking to respond in the best possible manner, it's the young guys that stood up in last years final series that the Roos will be looking to this week, Mitch Streiff, Tie Cuffe and Phil Kaufmann need to have big games as we are all well aware that Jamie Cuffe will provide on the day.

Key Match-Ups
Dan Gregory Vs Leigh Brennan - The Sharks will be desperate for Brennan to get involved in the match up, if he can find the ball early it will put the Roos on the back foot, but it will be harder to keep Jamie Cuffe out of the hole.
Mitch Streiff Vs Mitch Gaunt - The battle of the Mitch's should be a key indicator to the way the contest is going, if Streiff finds his touch of last years finals series, the Roos will be hard to stop.

Key Players
Sunbury:
Jamie Cuffe - If Rupo have one area that the Roos can exploit it is in the ruck, with Cuffe and Fishenden working in tandem, it's a tough duo to work around.
Rupertswood:
Todd Podolczak - Can play anywhere on the ground, defensively, through the midfield or forward and can play both tall and small roles if required, it makes him the most difficult Shark to match up.

Result:
There is no doubting the ability of the Sharks, whilst the reigning premiers are unquestionable, the key will be the Sharks ability to keep bouncing back when the Roos hit the scoreboard. Rupo spread really well, but the Roos are one of the best defensive transition sides in the competition, the Sharks are going to need to be patient and understand the tempo of the game, that might mean slowing up and picking their way through the Kangaroos at times, rather than just going flat out all day and getting taken apart on the rebound.
