RDFNL Reserves Grand Final
Diggers Rest Vs Riddell
The best two sides in the Reserve competition in 2013 face off for the ultimate result. The Bombers are looking for back to back premierships, while the Burra have been here a few times before and will be looking to kick start the day for the club.
The Burra had a strong year in the Reserves, dropping 3 games for the year and finishing in 2nd position on the ladder. But they have gone to another level in the finals, especially in the first week, defeating the previously unbeaten Riddell convincingly. The Burras have several players with senior experience in their line up, several players that played in previous Diggers Rest Grand Final losses, Shane Marchewka, Daniel McCabe, Michael Hildebrand, Leigh Rust and Bevan Green will provide valuable experience across the field for the Burras, while up forward they have Andrew Gleeson who has booted 41 goals for the year and the dangerous Joe Piccolo lurking at the foot of the packs.
The Bombers season was outstanding, undefeated throughout the course of the season, the Bombers plan for back to back premierships has followed it's course. The first week of finals didn't go to plan, but the Bombers responded emphatically, disposing of Rupertswood comfortably in the 2nd week before a strong 24 point win over Macedon in the Preliminary Final. The Bombers line up is laced with talent, Matt Vandenberg won the league goalkicking, Michael Sammut has had an outstanding season across the half back line, Liam Rath through the midfield along with the high leaping Troy Mariner inside forward 50.

The Game:
The Bombers have been the most outstanding side all season, they have a well balanced defence and an attacking midfield that provides plenty of opportunity to the forward line. The Burras will no doubt throw everything at the Bombers on Sunday, they play well together and support their teammates better than any other side.

Players to Watch:
Diggers Rest:
Joe Piccolo - The dangerous small forward reads the ball well off the pack and knows how to finish, if he gets off the leash, he could kick a winning score.
Shane Marchewka - With the impact of Kevin Anstey in the last two weeks, it will be important for Marchewka to impace the contest, as a ruckman, he pushes forward hard to be another option, that will make him dangerous.
Riddell:
Ryan Hurst - Strong ball winner who has been Riddell's most impressive in the finals to date, can play anywhere on the ground and disciplined enough to play a key role.
Mick Sammut - Important defender in the Bombers structure, gets across to help teammates and can run and carry out of the defensive 50.

Prediction:
Riddell have been the standout side all season, taking away the result of the first final, their last 2 weeks have proven they are back on the job and ready for back to back.

Hey team!!
I hope you're all pumped up for an exciting weekend of football .. it has been surprisingly quiet this week considering that the big dance is just hours away!!
We're all excited to get down and be part of the colour and excitement on the day. We will start our broadcast from 9am on 88.1FM at the ground :) We'll be getting the netballers involved as much as possible and have stacks of prizes for our Best on ground award.
Thanks for all the ongoing support for the broadcasts this year, especially those that have given us feedback on broadcasting the 18s and Reserves over the course of the finals.
We're on the look out for more presenters to step up next year.. if anyone is interested in doing what we're doing, we'd love to hear from you. We're looking to the RDFNL family to jump on board and share some of their football knowledge.. its the best gig in the world.. we'd love a play-by-play.. even two.. and anyone else..
Feel free to PM if you're interested and it will give us some idea of what will take place next year.. the team we have is running out of puff and as much as we all love what we do, we'd be better for getting others into the fold :)

Diggers Rest Vs Riddell
After a long regular season, the best two sides in the competition battle it out on Sunday for the ultimate of bragging rights and the ultimate reward.

The Burras had a strong season for the 2nd year running and have no doubt been on a mission to right what they see as a missed opportunity in 2012. Several key players have been added to the line up over the course of the year that have allowed the Burra to continue to develop the style of football they want to achieve. The addition of small forward Brandon Kilty has added pace and spark inside forward 50, the additions of Craig Harvey and Adam Richardson have provided continued midfield depth and the most important addition in the 2nd half of the year of Leonard Clark has given the Burras a strong presence in the ruck.
The season went pretty much to plan for the Burras, a loss in Round 1 against Riddell by just 5 points wasn't the ideal start, although both sides were missing several stars on the day, their only other loss came at the hands of Lancefield in Round 9 in a result that shocked the entire league. These were the only two losses for the club though, including two finals where they accounted for the Bombers by 4 goals in the first week, then snuck over the line against a determined Sunbury side that pushed them all the way.

The Bombers season followed much the same path. They were devastating for a majority of the regular season, their only blemish coming in the form of a big loss to the Burras. There was a definite focus over the off season for the Bombers of returning to the top, the loss of Ben Sonogan was offset by the additions of Ethan Foreman and Paul Sahlberg and the emergence of young star Matt Darby. The Bombers also added some ruck strength, adding David Bruno and Kevin Anstey to the list, allowing Brayden Allen to play a key role in defense.
The Bombers first final against the Burras was a physical, tough hitout, and the end result sent the Bombers the long way home. But their response was emphatic, disposing of Romsey and the Sunbury Kangaroos in consecutive weeks to set up the rematch this week.

The Game:
These two sides have played the most outstanding brand of football all season, the Burra are the best transition team in the competition, they switch from attack to defense quickly and the midfield support the back 6, they have the ability to attack strongly through having the best key forward in the competition. The issue for the Burra at times is they can lose control of the tempo of the game, playing the game the way the opposition want to play, it is about regaining the control in this situation that will be important.
The Bombers can exploit the control of the tempo in the game better than anyone, their ability to win the contested ball around stoppages allows their game breakers to run forward into space, with the way some of the runners use the ball, this is exceptionally dangerous, something the Burra must shut down. If the Bombers can win the contested ball and find that space, it in turn opens space up forward as the opposition will struggle to get numbers back in support.

Riddell:
Jaryd Silvester - His form over the past 2 weeks makes him a major player in this contest, he will likely end up matched with Brett Caton who will make him work for everything he gets, if he has an impact, the Bombers will be hard to beat.
Peter Robertson - He's a jet, and his ability to win the ball inside and outside of a contest will be invaluable in the heat of a Grand Final, can cruise along at times, but if he is on, he will be hard to lock down.

These two have promised us epic battles for many years in Grand Finals, this year, they have promised all season long. The Bombers have the upper hand on the biggest day without doubt, but this is the best position the Burra have been in come the final day. They are disciplined and desperate to achieve this goal. They will be hard to beat.

My heart gos out to those rupo u/18s lads. There really is no words to offer a group thats in their spot right now. I hope they stick fat and bounce back because they were phenomenal all year this year. And riddells lads were also. Agony and ecstasy. Wonder what else today will send at us? Gonna have to be top shelf and down to the red time to top that but. Struth! Couldnt make it up

As an independent observer it was a great match to watch. I know there are many line ball umpiring decisions throughout the course of a game,but I thought the big lad from Rupo who looked to have taken a heavily contested grab in front of goal near the end of the game was a bit stiff not to have it paid as a mark. Nevertheless it was a great spectacle and congratulations to Riddell on their win.
 
RDFNL Buffalo Sports Under 18.5 Grand Final
The Under 18.5 Grand Final was a cracking way to kick the day off yesterday, the heavily favored Rupertswood who were a dominant force all season taking on the only side to beat them all year in Riddell.
The first quarter was a tight tough affair, Rupo looked to gain the ascendency early against the wind with the first goal of the game in the opening minute, the signs were ominous early, but the Bombers settled, Samuel Foreman started across half back on dangerous Rupo forward Jayden Muscat and got the better of the battle, keeping Muscat quiet and mopping up several Rupo attacks. The two sides worked hard in the opening quarter and could only manage 2 goals apiece, the Bombers having the better of the quarter though, with 6 shots on goal, they struggled with accuracy though.
Riddell 2.4.16 led Rupo 2.2.14
The 2nd quarter saw the arm wrestle continue, Rupo were pressing, but the Bombers were well served by Foreman once again and Thomas Keaney in the back half as they continually repelled the Rupo attack, but the type of pressure the Bombers backline was under was always going to break eventually, for Rupo though, it was a little late to capitalize, they did kick late goals though to take a 14 point lead into Half Time and had all the momentum in the game.
Rupo 5.6.36 led Riddell 3.4.22
The half time break couldn't have come quick enough for the Bombers, but they needed a structure change to break the contest open and that's what they got. Sam Foreman went forward and dominated the quarter as the Bombers took control of the contest. Matthew Panuccio started to impact the game through the midfield and Tim Rowsell was causing headaches up forward. The Bombers dominated the quarter and regained the lead, with what would be a match winning 5 goal quarter.
Riddell 8.7.55 led Rupo 6.8.44
The last quarter was what Grand Final football is all about; tight, tough, uncompromising football. Riddell controlled the tempo in the early minutes, but just couldn't impact the scoreboard, all of their shots on goal dropping short, Rupo swept the ball up the other end and a goal to Ben Hunter reduced the margin to 5 points. Rupo then peppered the scoring end with countless opportunities. Ash Millane, who had been quiet all game started to find some valuable space, he missed 3 opportunities on goal and Ben Hunter took another on the lead and missed. The lead was reduced to one point as Rupo threw everything at the Bombers. Hunter was denied a mark only 15 metres out from goal with less than a minute to play, then the Sharks had one last push forward, a long kick to the top of the square saw Hunter with a one on one marking contest, only for the siren to go whilst the ball was in the air, the gallant Bombers holding on for a fantastic 1 point victory.

RDFNL Simonds Homes Reserves Grand Final
After the close game in the 18s, it was always going to be tough to top, but the two best sides all season ran out to do battle in the Reserves Game in what promised to be a classic in it's own right.

The Burras kicked against the wind in the opening term and got the jump on the Bombers, Shane Marchewka looked dangerous inside forward 50 and got the opening goal of the game, followed by a couple of strong contested marks. The Burras were on top though as they pressed forward hard, the Bombers settled by the close of the opening term, but it was a flying start for the Burras.
Diggers Rest 5.4.34 led Riddell 3.4.22
The 2nd quarter saw the game tighten right up across the field, complete contrast to the opening term. Both sides were struggling to find a winning target inside forward 50, despite both having several chances. Only a goal apiece for the term was a good result for the Bombers against the wind as they went into half time within striking distance.
Diggers Rest 6.3.39 led Riddell 4.6.30
The third quarter belonged to the Bombers as they took control of the contest, Andy McCabe was in everything across the half forward line, while Robert Henry switched forward and looked dangerous at every contest. Troy Marinier got on the end of a couple of forward entries and kicked goals as the Bombers looked to be in control with a 4 goal to nil quarter.
Riddell 8.11.59 led Diggers Rest 6.4.40
The Burras needed a spark and they got it from Leigh Rust who started a little deeper in the forward 50 and became the key target, he took a couple of big marks for the quarter, booted a goal and set up another as the Burras got within a kick. For the next few minutes it looked as though we would have a repeat of the previous game as the Burras peppered the goals without being able to land the killer blow, that was until Joe Piccolo roved at the back of the pack and kicked a goal unopposed in the goal square to give the Burras the lead, this was followed by a quick snap at goal that bounced through, giving the Burras the win in a ripping match up.

RDFNL Melton Toyota Senior Grand Final
The Senior Game promised so much after the tight two opening games and proved that the side that was most efficient on the day would be victorious, so far, in the previous two games, the side that failed to capitalize on opportunities would ultimately be defeated.

The first quarter went as many would have expected, both sides were cautious whilst feeling out the opposition and the way the game was to be played. The Bombers were the first to hit the scoreboard with a strong goal to key forward James Nolan, it would be the Bombers only score of the quarter as the Burras controlled the tempo of the game, but didn't put that into scoreboard pressure, their first goal of the day came from a free kick and 50m penalty to Brandon Kilty followed by a goal to Brent Tuckey. Those would be the only goals for the quarter.
Diggers Rest 2.2.14 led Riddell 1.0.6
The second quarter started with a bang, Brian Ruffell kicking a long goal within the first minute of the quarter, followed by a silky goal from Peter Robertson and the Bombers were away. It was the most dominant quarter put together for the day from any side as the Bombers took control in the middle of the ground and found space to create opportunities forward of the ball. The Burra simply struggled to contain the Bombers spread and the Bombers made the most of those opportunities. The middle stages of the quarter saw the Burras steady a little, a goal to Kris Marsh was immediately answered by Haydn Ross. Paul Sahlberg drew a free kick for high contact to push the lead out 9 points and when Brian Ruffell marked and kicked truly, the lead was out to 15 points. But the Bombers weren't done, a swinging shot on goal by Dan Sahlberg pushed the lead to 22 points, before Tuckey answered from a 50m penalty to bring the lead back to 16 points. The quarter was drawing to a close when Paul Sahlberg hit a leading James Nolan who kicked truly to give the Bombers a 22 point half time lead.
Riddell 8.1.49 led Diggers Rest 4.3.27
The Burras needed a big 3rd term and it started well, with Tuckey kicking the opening 2 goals of the 3rd quarter in the first 4 minutes to drag the lead back to 10 points and the Burras looking ominous. But a free kick to Jaryd Silvester at the other end steadied the ship before a stunning left foot snap from Paul Sahlberg saw the lead restored to 22 points, when Jeremy Krojs goaled late in the quarter to give the Bombers a big 28 point lead, the game looked all but over. Step in Brandon Kilty, 2 goals in less than 40 seconds saw the lead dragged back to 18 points at 3 quarter time. It was still game on.
Riddell 11.4.70 led Diggers Rest 8.4.52
The Burras needed an early goal kicking against the breeze and they got just that when Craig Marshall booted his first to bring the game back to just 2 kicks. But it was Peter Robertson who would step up again with a steadier for the Bombers, but Brent Tuckey, who was the most dangerous player on the ground at this stage, responded to keep the Burras in touch. The next 5 minutes were match defining for both sides. Ethan Foreman kicked a brilliant goal which was followed quickly by a 3rd goal to Paul Sahlberg seemed to wrap the game up for the Bombers, who controlled the tempo of the game for a few minutes, with 11 minutes remaining and a 22 point Bomber lead, it was looking like a tough ask for the Burras. Unfortunately for Riddell, Mick Allen went down with a serious leg injury and was stretchered off the ground. After the delay, Kris Marsh goaled to give the Burras some hope as the lead was reduced to 16 points and the Burras stormed forward from the next clearance with a long kick that saw Leonard Clark mark on the goal line and kick truly to make the lead 8 points. Another clearance saw the ball in Clark's hands from 40m again, but he agonizingly hit the post, bringing the lead back to 7 points, but with time running down, the Bombers were able to hold on and win in another classic GF between these two sides.

Congratulations to Riddell on an outstanding season.. The Bombers led from the front all year and were able to get the job done once again when it mattered most.
Commiserations to the Burras who threw everything at the Bombers, but in the end, just missed in some vital areas on the day that ultimately cost them the win.

So now all said and done who is looking for coaches for next season. I have heard Macedon?Kilmore? Romsey? Woodend? and wondering if these are right but also who else? Is Scoble at Riddell and Elliot at Diggers going again?

Right with Kilmore, for the boys sake I'm hoping an announcement wont be far away. I thought Fitzy was going round again at Woodend? The plumb job in my opinion would be Rupo but there's been no suggestion on here about that being vacant. Centrals and Wheels are the right fit for each other and with the amount of Melton Bloods guys I saw in their social rooms when I dropped in there's a fair base of potential recruits right there.

Congrats also to Troy and the Riddell FC. I know a few thought they lacked leg speed last year, so what they were able to introduce this season proved to be the key ingredient at crucial times yesterday. Thoughts go out the Mick Allen too, hope the surgery went as well as possible and the recovery is strong.

What a day it was on Sunday!! Congratulations to the Lancefield Football Netball Club on putting together a fantastic day.. it was flawless from their perspective and they were really accommodating on all levels.. hats off to them.. they never fail to deliver on the big stage and they deserve a big pat on the back! :)
Congratulations must go to the league for putting together a great show.. everything ran smoothly, the team worked hard, and they did deliver! :)
We were shattered not to be able to see any netball action or go any where near the mighty courts, but the atmosphere sounded terrific from the ground, and that's the way it always is! :)
The 18s was an instant classic.. Rupertswood were so close on the day.. inaccurate kicking cost them on the day.. Ash Millane kicked 1.5 on the day and Ben Hunter was forced up the ground a lot.. they had their chances.. as did Jaxon Barton.. he had several shots at the big sticks for Riddell and missed them all.. many out on the fulls.. that's finals! Lachy Muir going down with an ankle injury on three quarter time certainly hurt.. his presence in the middle quarters was minor at times.. Sam Foreman's move up forward was similar to that of Shane Ellen move to full forward for the Crows in 1997.. Foreman won the game off his own boot!
The Reserves was outstanding .. Riddell played a quicker brand of football but the Burras just kept grinding away.. their pressure was great than Riddell's and that last quarter was flawless. Ben Glasson was the best player by a mile.. no-one could touch him.. his pace and second/third efforts was up there with some of the best football I've seen from an individual this year, and we've watched a few games.. it was a cracking contest and Paul Crimmins and his team were magnificent! Well done!
The Bombers of the last two weeks nearly delivered in the Seniors.. the Burras were just too strong and kept battling away, as expected.. if that shot at goal from Clark went through the goals, you'd almost think that Diggers may have just gone on with the job in the dying moments such was the momentum. What a fitting finale to the year and worth the excitement that stacks up to that of the last two years!

I'm Daniel, sports journo for the Sunbury/Macedon Ranges Weekly and Melton/Moorabool Weekly.

I covered the RDFL all year, and just wanted to post about how much I enjoyed it - I've been covering local/suburban/regional/rural footy for about seven years now and in my time I've done VFL, TAC Cup, VAFA, WRFL, SFL, NFL, EDFL, CHFL, MCDFL, GDFL and more, and I can safely say outside of the VFL the Riddell league's the one I've enjoyed the most. Really great people, not one coach has knocked me back this year, win or lose. Had a great and frank chat with Jamie Elliott after the weekend's game, and the Rupo U18s coach Phil as well, in spite of a tough week he had and a shattering loss (I thought it was a mark myself but they missed a few they should have kicked late).

The only person who knocked me back for a chat this year was Big Bad Bustling after the Lancefield game, and I wasn't going to hang around and argue the point lol.

I honestly tipped Diggers for the flag (and for any Diggers people reading, we ran a correction in this week's paper for my terrible mistake a couple of weeks back saying Diggers had not won a senior flag), of all the footy I saw this year they played the best, but geez Riddell were good on Sunday, well deserved. Tuckey was almost single-handedly keeping Diggers in it at one stage but the Foremans and the Sahlbergs of the world were exceptional. And there was even a classic BT spray. Congrats to the Bombers.

(and just on Tuckey, really liked Scobes' comment on him in the GF record... league's best player, only matched by Dan Gregory... Tuckey was sensational on Sunday, and I saw Sunbury eight times this year and reckon I saw Gregory lose maybe three or four contests. Unbelievable)

I covered the RDFL all year, and just wanted to post about how much I enjoyed it - I've been covering local/suburban/regional/rural footy for about seven years now and in my time I've done VFL, TAC Cup, VAFA, WRFL, SFL, NFL, EDFL, CHFL, MCDFL, GDFL and more, and I can safely say outside of the VFL the Riddell league's the one I've enjoyed the most. Really great people, not one coach has knocked me back this year, win or lose. Had a great and frank chat with Jamie Elliott after the weekend's game, and the Rupo U18s coach Phil as well, in spite of a tough week he had and a shattering loss (I thought it was a mark myself but they missed a few they should have kicked late).

The only person who knocked me back for a chat this year was Big Bad Bustling after the Lancefield game, and I wasn't going to hang around and argue the point lol.

I honestly tipped Diggers for the flag (and for any Diggers people reading, we ran a correction in this week's paper for my terrible mistake a couple of weeks back saying Diggers had not won a senior flag), of all the footy I saw this year they played the best, but geez Riddell were good on Sunday, well deserved. Tuckey was almost single-handedly keeping Diggers in it at one stage but the Foremans and the Sahlbergs of the world were exceptional. And there was even a classic BT spray. Congrats to the Bombers.

(and just on Tuckey, really liked Scobes' comment on him in the GF record... league's best player, only matched by Dan Gregory... Tuckey was sensational on Sunday, and I saw Sunbury eight times this year and reckon I saw Gregory lose maybe three or four contests. Unbelievable)

For what its worth, my best players in the seniors were -

3. Brent Tuckey....Played great for ALL 4 quarters & musta taken 20 marks at least, to go with his 5 goals !
2. Paul Sahlberg...Turned it on when it mattered with 3 goals, even though he was heavily tagged.
1. Peter Robertson...Got many very important touches & kicked 2 great goals against the run of play.

And to Mickey Allen who tragically broke his leg in the latter stages of the last quarter - Get well soon champ, we're all thinking of you ! :thumbsu:
 
My 3-2-1 would have been Foreman-P Sahlberg-Tuckey.

Big flow-on effect of Mick Allen's injury... dominated Subbies cricket last yr. Sad to see someone go down with 10 mins to go.

I'm not privvy to names (nor should I be) but from what I believe there were 3-4 guys express interest which is great. The sooner we have an appointment and the club strengthens its list the better it will be for everyone. Then once they win round 1 next year at home vs Wallan it will be a huge step forward after a disappointing 2013.

As for your reference to Broadford, you couldn't be further from the truth sorry. As flattered as I have been that some up home seem think I can be of help, I'm still a fraction uncertain about the club being in the RDFL and the history behind how it all came about back in 2008.

That's how we saw it. Paul was very unlucky to miss out. It was out of him and Ethan. Had Diggers managed to get up it would have been Tuckey. Congratulations to Nick, Troy and all the guys at Riddell. To Jamie, Stuart and all the guys at Diggers, great fight back. Another 5 minutes would have made the game very interesting.

To the guys at Riddell, could you please wish Mick all the best with his recovery.

And we may have just finished 2013, however I'm already looking forward to season 2014. If there is anyone out there that has ever contemplated umpiring, 2014 is your year. We need the numbers to support this great league. You don't have to have experience, it is all provided. If you are a junior footballer you may wish to get involved on Saturdays, senior footballers may want to umpire juniors on a Sunday. You may have just finished your footy career and want to stay involved ( we have many ex footballers on our list including a Bowen medal winner). Give it a go. You can make yourself a nice little pile of tax free cash and if you become successful you could go onto umpire at VFL or even the AFL. If you do happen to be interested, please visit the Riddell Umpires website.

Unfortunately I could not watch the big game on Sunday. How did the umpiring compare to last year. Were there a lot of free kicks to any one side in the last 4 minutes or did the whistle get put away.?
 
G'day guys, I know the season has just finished, but whats everyone's thought on night games next year? I know I had a few conversations with Romsey this year and now considering that several clubs including the Kangas are getting lighting upgrades what are people's/players thoughts on actually scheduling night games like the BallaratFL do?
Also like to wish Micky Allen a speedy recover from what looked liked a nasty leg break.

Thought you blokes had an exceptional day in ALL the 3 games. :thumbsu:
Only blemish was the Umpire that paid a 50 meter penalty in the main game which resulted in an easy goal, when the player protested to him - "He ducked into it" Seems the Umpire needs a hearing aid to distinguish between the words "Ducked" & "*ucked" which HE said the player used !!!...........No harm done though thankfully !!! :oops:
