Love the way Bulldog plays.. Against the Roos though had a very quiet day.
Luke Carroll close but no cigar, played a good game.
Warren Else was beaten by a 2nd rate full forward against us.
John Rowe was good both times but dont rate in the same category as the others, cant put the whole comp in :p

Must admit, I missed Kar Weng, he should be on that list...

I know there will be a lot of people who disagree with this, but I believe that if ift, John Rowe would be an elite player in this competition. He has far a better ability to read the play than team mate Robertson and has excellent skills to match.

Warren Else has been beaten rarely in the last three years and is very underated (except by the Hawks coaching staff).

Luke Carroll is the best winger in the competition by six lengths (why oh why Fitzy played him at CHB earlier this year still has me baffled). Strack is an out and out superstar, and has battled injury all year. You don't win two Bowen Medals by being a dud.

As for Scott Clark, well we all know that he is in the top five midfielders for the comp when going. Simon Choate has lost plenty this season but is still better than 90% of the competition.

Luke Maunsell should also get a mention, when he played against us earlier in the year he dominated and really can play.

Yeah, fair points all of them... But like I said about Bulldog, the question was who were the better this year... Bulldog is a star, no doubt, but with injuries has just battled a little this year..

Agree, A Fit Johnny Rowe would be one of the top players, unfortunately, again, just lacked that fitness this year to be in that bracket... Scooter has struggled as well with injuries this year that keep him out of this bracket.. Tully has been Lancefield's best so far...

Luke Carroll is a gun and probably should have been on my list, but ill stick with my thought that I wont have him with the others listed... He has been the best CHB we have seen this year though...

The players i have mentioned are consistant week in week out, the players you have stated are brilliant but, to be the best you have to perform week in week out! The blokes i have stated have been consiant all year round, except the odd injury, with missing a game or two!

Its to hard to call, i think the bowen could be a draw if you ask most people. Ruane has the grab of the year though! Was they're footage of this?

Steve Ruane Ditto
Arnel Davis Kicked bags every game he has played.
Dale Cuinik?
Mick Lacy?

You have to be kidding me....

its all about what a player has done in the last 1-2 years, its your opinion which you have the right to that but bulldog cmon..... has been there and isnt there anymore, you would have to admit- consistant without being great, another one is luke carrol- all the skill but is good without being great, i could pick 3-4 players from romsey alone that are playing better football than "bullpup". but ill forgive you because you are biased, as are alot of one eyed supporters so i do apologise for making an example of you.

On a differant note there have been alot of injuries too key players in the comp, who's do you think has been the most damging to their team this year??

Alright, ill make my side from the players who have performed against the Kangaroos... (and including Roos Players)

B - Ng (WH) Peatling (RID) Lyon (MC)
HB - Johnson (SK) Allen (RID) Carroll (ROM)
C - Sims (DR) M.McInerney (SK) Clarke (L)
HF - Rowe (K) Lacy (WH) Wadden (RID)
F - Davis (DR) L.James (RID) Hede (K)
R - Jose (DR) Ruane (DR) McClellan (ROM)
I - J.Tully (L), B.Morgan (ROM), Meldrum (ROM),
Matthews (ROC)

(Lee James included at full forward as he leads league goalkicking, didn't play against SK first time around.)

Had to take him out...

i do think the bowen will be a low voting affair, robertson has only played 9 full games with 2 1st quarter injuries, and is doubtful to return by season end but yes has been consistent (but would struggle to win kilmores top award with only half a season

interchange; M.McInerney (SK)
cmon, he is by far the best rover in the comp at stopages, here is a time where you should be being biased..... McClellen pffff

im not sure who would replace him at hbf but bobby johnson, cmon he is all arms and legs and does get plenty of the ball but when i have seen him he turned the ball over by foot over 80% of the time, nothing against the poor kid- he is good but he should stick to his strengths... handballing

I did an interview with Romsey coach Kev Fitzgerald, skipper Al Meldrum and president John Lynch last week.

Here is the article for tomorrow's edition. In case people haven't heard, The Free Press is going to be home delivered in Romsey and Lancefield as of tomorrow, and will have a seperate front and back page to the Kilmore edition.

Fitzgerald said that Daniel Carroll was his best player for the season. He played OK against Kilmore and Fitzy said it was one of his worst games so he must be going alright.

BIG MONTH AHEAD FOR REDBACKS

FOOTBALL clubs are always trying to find a way to get ahead of the rest of the field. It’s all about planning, marketing and experimenting now, you just can’t “wing it” and hope it will work.

Over the past two seasons, the people behind the Romsey Football Club have worked tirelessly to ensure that the club will be a force both on and off the field in the next 10 years. An influx of new sponsors and new social members has given the place a breath of fresh air, and the club is positive bigger things are to come. Since the end of last season, around $40,000 has been spent on facilities. The resurfacing of the ground and erecting a new fence was well worth the cost of $36,000 - along with the new goal posts, connecting power to the scoreboard and a shelter for the umpire’s escorts - has only increased ground’s reputation as one of the best in the Riddell league.

On the field, the Redbacks have been consistent all season, but have been forced to fight for a position in the finals after suffering a long list of injuries to key players. Although the Redbacks’ win-loss ratio isn’t as impressive as what they would like, they have only lost five games this season by an average margin of 13 points, confirming that they are a tough side to beat. On their home ground they have yet to be beaten in 2006, and are keen to keep it that way.

The wide open spaces that Romsey’s oval presents means that lazy footballers are found out, and Redbacks coach Kevin Fitzgerald has his players well drilled to play two-way football. With a combination of on-field and off-field success, you get a positive vibe when you are inside the Romsey rooms.Club president John Lynch says the club worked hard over summer to make sure that when the season started the main focus was on the football, rather than the administration.“We’ve got a terrific committee and the club is running as well as it ever has. I think the future is really strong for the Romsey Football Club,” he said.

While Mr Lynch admitted that he would love to see the club winning a few more games, he believes Fitzgerald and the players would find their best form in the lead up to the finals. Currently in fifth position with a two match buffer over their nearest rivals, the Redbacks are all but certain to make the finals. However, the next month presents a challenge for the club, who face Sunbury Kangaroos this Saturday, followed by games against Lancefield, Woodend-Hesket and Riddell. While you would expect Romsey to topple the Tigers, they are no certainties to win the other three matches.

COACH SAYS . . .

Fitzgerald believes that the lead up to the finals will be the true indicator of where his side is at. “We are starting to get our best side on the park, and with four hard games coming up it will be a good test for the players,” he said. “If we can win three out of the next four, it will give us plenty of confidence heading into the finals."

While Fitzgerald admitted that he had some concerns about his side’s poor mid-season, he always believed the club would prosper for the experience. “We have had a lot of injuries and that has given some younger players an opportunity at the top level,” he said. “Now when we get players back in the side, we know who can stand up if we have any more injuries, which is a good position to be in.”

Romsey fans should see Mark Dipietro, Shaun Hunter and Matt McLellan back in the senior side this week, while Mick McCarthy and Brydon Morgan are expected to return against Lancefield a week later. As far as Redbacks’ skipper Alistair Meldrum is concerned, the season is really only just starting for his side, who are determined to make a run for the flag in the next eight weeks. “We think if we have our best 22 out on the park, then we can beat anybody,” he said. “Our biggest losing margin has been 21 points this season, and we think we are just as good a side as any other in the competition.” “The next four weeks are crucial, if we play well we can really set up a big finals campaign,” he said.

With the injury list shrinking, it will be interesting to see if Romsey can turn on-field fortunes around in the next four weeks. It’s one thing to be strong off the field, but football is about winning premierships, and if the Redbacks don’t play well in this year’s finals series, there is sure to be extremists calling for drastic changes.

Football is a cut-throat industry when the results don’t go your way, and often there is no excuse or reason good enough for passionate supporters who want to see their side win a flag. To keep the fans happy, and to reward the hard working committee, there is only one thing the Redbacks can do . . . bring home the premiership cup.

Agree :thumbsu:

I think the early Robertson and Rowe injuries along with Ahern have hurt the Blues..

Obviously Lee James ankle early this year has cost them a couple of games.

But most impact would be Brydon Morgan and Matt McClellan at Romsey... Has hurt when they have needed them the most...

I have backed Robbo all year, but I agree, with him now missing the rest of the season wont win the bowen, and probably wont make team of the year...

Tell me have they done anything to improve what would be rated the worst away change rooms in the comp. if not are there plans in place. I would be embarrassed if it was my club My garage is a better setup.

not so sure JR will win Kilmore B&F so easily, damien barton is having a good 2nd half of season and will def give it a shake - and although robbo has been injured, hes in the top players when he has got through the 4 quarters.

and im gonna tip Jezza Jose for the bowen - often in best players and gets around the ground well - and blitzed us in both games!

Good to see Macedon beat Woodend on the weekend. They have troubled some of the finals contenders without getting the points this year.

There was a rumour that a player was suspended for abusing a spectator on the weekend, i find this hard to believe. But anything is possible this year.

Burlak!!!! Are you serious??? Poor list...

No Matt Robertson?

Top players in the comp no particular order at this stage...

Shaun Sims, Arnel Davis, Steve Ruane, Lee James, Jason Allen, Mark McInerney, Bobby Johnson, Mick Lacy, Dale Cuinik, Aaron James, Mick Gadsden, Matt McClellan, Matt Robertson, Al Meldrum, Jeremy Jose.

In my opinion though, the best of this lot that I have seen this year would be Ruane.. Dominated every game I have seen him play...

burlak is a great player and will get in the team of the year. great mark!!
you rate players on the importance to their team. and those two players would have to be l.james and a. james. would be very hard for these teams to win the grandfinal without their stars.
james virtually won the grand final last year by himself
sims and robertson i enjoy wathing the most but their teams could win without them

if you had to pick out of m.mcinerney and dum dum for a grand final who would you pick, would have to be dum dum wouldn't it??

hard call but McInerney has had more of an impact this year, unfortunately dummy has been hampered by injury.

Watching the Kilmore V Roos 2 weeks ago, just wanting to know who number 13 is for Kilmore? 13 Goals down and kicks 2 goals, good effort! But champ you do not celebrate a goal like 'straunie' or a 'aeroplane' when your down that much down, played well, but not called for! Chin up champ, thing's will work out, look at JR and Duff. Rumour has it an the 'Old Man Goudgie' got the can's from the Sunbury game, can anyone clarify this? Kilmore need Maxi, its not debateable!:thumbsu:

kid kicked 3 goals... know that his celebration of goal were not serious... he was clearly just dissapointed that his team had been beaten by a better side. i saw it as a message that he was sayin " why coodnt he do it with that much ease in the first 3 quarters" maybve becoz sunbury had eased off. anyway the kid is young so of course hes gonna have a bit of attitude.

discussion is really heating up on this forum n its good 2 see... my fave for the Bowen wood be Jose from diggers rest... shame that my good mate robbo has been injured on n off this season coz im sure he wooda been up there! as for kilmores best n fairest its gonna b close between JR Barton Duff n Robbo.... hede as an outsider but has been inconsistent in the last 6 weeks

Good reply Travis.....

Heard the word out of Kilmore is "Old Man Goudgie", will be hangin them up due to arthritis in just about every part of the old fossil!
Who's the hair dresser in Kilmore, she needs a "turkey slappin" the bad onions getting round up there. What is James Duff trying to support, please inform me someone, and JR mate, you got your initials in the back of you head! Hede, that amount of tips on your head went out when, when the spice girls did (they were never in)! Get it together boys and well see you next september!
