RDFNL 2020 Season discussion

Full respect to everyone from Jed down at Romsey FC 👊
100% agree with this, romsey made a very very tough decision and I’m sure one that wouldn’t have been easy to make. But credit where credit is due, it is the right decision. u have to put your club first and almost 40 leagues out of about 48 state wide have done so, by cancelling their seasons, due to the covid virus, and the risks associated with it. We’ll done romsey i take my hat off to you.

Couldn’t agree more, great stuff of Romsey to put the health of players, coaches and volunteers ahead of anything else. Showing more balls than the league and AFL Vic who seem to be stuck pedaling false hope about player payments, 500 strong crowds and return to training protocols with no playing looking probable.

Just up stumps Now and call it off, it ain’t gonna happen, it’s fools thinking.

Is there something the rdfl aren’t telling us? Are they seeing this current situation with this virus, totally differently compared to the rest of leagues around the state... Another league cancelled. North Gippsland footy league.

The Board of the NGFNL together with all member clubs have conducted extensive analysis and significant due diligence around the impacts of COVID19, and the associated return to play policies imposed by AFL Victoria.
We understand and appreciate the time frames associated with this process may have caused some frustration, but we can unashamedly say, we have left no stone unturned in our decision-making process or in our desire to find a workable solution.

Accordingly, the NGFNL will abandon Season 2020 for all Senior Football and Netball competitions.

Our decision was influenced by many factors such as the recent COVID-19 announcements by the Premier of Victoria Mr Daniel Andrews, ongoing social distancing requirements, the threat of a secondary COVID-19 wave, increased volunteer workloads, compliance expectations and with the simple reality around player and patron numbers attending our venues and under what circumstances they can attend has ongoing limitations which will impact the commercial viability of community clubs.

We could not justify or envisage a return to “business as usual” and nor are we prepared to risk the health and wellbeing of people nor club sustainability.

Our Board and member clubs sincerely desire to thank all volunteers, club members, sponsors and significant others who make our Brand respected and have endured this journey with us. We have appreciated your patience, valued your support and trust you will all join us again in 2021

Finally, whilst we cannot proceed with a Senior competition, we will turn our attention on the junior aspects of our league and hope to deliver some opportunities for our young players who are the future of our respective Football and Netball competitions.

Talk on the EDFL forums is that it’s just the strong clubs flexing their muscles, clubs also that have invested this years junior fees into last years senior player payments are all obviously keen to play as well.

I would imagine if there are clubs that back Romseys stance there will be no RDFL season, can’t comment on junior but I do know that neither Rupo nor Rookies juniors have trained so a season looks unlikely there too.

Given the new case number announced today you’d have to think that any prospect of having a crowd is gone now. Also how could we risk exposing players, volunteers and their families to the risks of coming together to train and play with the case numbers spiking the way that they are. The COVID19 situation on its own challenges the mental health wellbeing of everyone, it is astounding that this is being compounded with this will they won’t they conversation around local footy. For the sake of all involved surely the governing body need to show leadership and cancel all 2020 local footy.

They seem to have been responsible not chopping and changing and giving a running commentry.

Does this season count for player points?
Will you go down a point if you stay were you signed at for next year
With talk of massiveley reduced salary cap next year does goldfields get a say or are they not arkund anymore

Gee thats stiff if that’s the case. Players points should drop imo despite the season not going ahead. That’s not the players fault.

if so do you also think players who got cleared to clubs in hope of a game elsewhere go back to original clubs with an extra point on top?Surely not? Therefore all 2020 points irrelevant.
All leagues will need a full time investigation officer to keep salary cap in check. No hope of many sticking to that IMO.

From what I understand the blokes who went to other clubs did it on permit basis & have to go back to there original club in 2021. Original point value of the player in that comp should apply you’d like to think.

The reduction in cap is gonna be interesting, especially the bigger comps. As you know very hard to police. Voucher sales might go up in 2021 across Victoria.

Looking forward to seeing which clubs are going to be able retain players for less moolah. Can’t wait to see how that unfolds

It will be interesting to see how the $100k salary cap reduction across local leagues impacts the league.

Does the league drop $10k only from the cap and keep $100k ? Or does apply a ~60% cut to give clubs a $50k cap to work with ?

My thoughts that the major benefit for a lower cap is more clubs will be able to compete given the dollar entry point.

The players who have shopped themselves around. Will find that the market will shrink due to tightening budgets.

A concern is that a playing standard gap between major leagues and district leagues may increase if a smaller cap is implemented at a district level.

They must see it like a player who gets injured. Still, under these strange circumstances there should be some give.

Would this encourage players to play for less and enjoy the community and comradery of playing sport?

There will absolutely be some who will and there will be some who won't. Not sure what sort of split % that would be though, Chris.

Daniel Nolan and Lance Picone on tomorrow night talking about the impact of Covid-19.
