It's less about coming up with new ideas and more about securing funding. They're banking on nostalgia to generate revenue, rather than taking a risk by funding something that isn't a pre-existing IP.

This time it's not an accident when he's left home.
Kevin goes on a physcotic rampage of terror and murder complete with flashbacks of being left home as a child.
Kevin necks himself to finally impress on his parents how shit they were at their job.
