I've been seeing the SEN team of the draft they have been doing on FB, and I keep having to look and ponder why there is 1 or none Port players... and more often than not am surprised at how bad we drafted - some years.
Because I'm a little bored, I thought I would go through each of the years and do a re-draft, where I can keep the player we drafted, or swap him with someone drafter within 5 picks AFTER our pick. I also did not take into account any benefit from the trade of the player drafted (ie. what we got for Wingard helps Wingards case) and considered the whole career of the players selected afterwards, but only the career at Port Adelaide for the player we drafted. If there was a player within the 5 also drafted by Port Adelaide, I skipped them and went to the next player. If I had a 50/50 call, club loyalty to Port Adelaide plays a role (ie. Kingsley selection over Pike). F/S selections we still could not select. If there were multiple good options, I tried to select a like player if I could.

I only looked at the AFL Draft, didn't consider the Pre-Season or Rookie drafts. Maybe another time for that. I stopped at 2015, as there are too many players at the start of their career to truely know what impact they will have.

Whilst these are interesting exercises, you can only do it for one or two years. After that the players replaced are going to have affected our games won (more since replacing with better players) and hence subsequent draft positions.

Though really it doesn't show anything too surprising. A lack of value put on KPP's (a perennial issue in our time in the AFL), combined with a lack of resources in our football department meant we crap shooted beyond the first round many times (and unsurprisingly bombed our choices), as we didn't have money to get enough games viewed life versus other clubs.

I would have preferred Pavlich over Adam Morgan. At the time you could select 1 17yo. It would have been pretty handy to have him in the forward line in the early 2000s.

I think you should re do the 1998 draft selections given the rules in place. We could select 1 x 17 year old. We went with Adam Morgan at 37.

Every club ignored a 16 year old Matthew Pavlich because he had a back injury. he turned 17 on 31st December so he was eligible.

Jonathan Brown's old man spoke to Port and said that he would nominate for the draft if Port guaranteed to use first pick on Brown, as he only wanted to come to Port or the Hawks, not anyone else, or he would wait 12 months and go to Brisbane under father son.

When Brown revealed this a few years ago, he never said if that was 7 which was our pick or pick 5 we got for trading Heuskes to Brisbane.

Could you imagine if we got in when we should of? Would of had at least 5 flags.

Tim Evans, Scott Hodges and Mark Taylor resulted in flags

One decent full forward in the 20 plus years of AFL is a disgrace

I know there's not alot of water under the bridge but would anyone change our 3 1st rounders from 2018? You can only swap them for players drafted after them.
I say wouldn't swap any.

I say wouldn't swap any.

Not even close. There's only a handful drafted before them that you'd take.

It's like the Boak/Gray/Westhoff draft. Even at this stage, I'll confidently call that by the end of their careers they'll all be top 10 players from that draft.
