I feel like the Lever situation has moved a lot of posters here along the path of understanding how player salaries, salary caps and player movements will work under free agency.

Many posters are now understanding that, yes, we can keep Lever and McGovern by paying them big dollars, but doing so will mean that we may not be able to get the A-grade mid or two we need.

So it may actually be better to trade good players that you think you can cover in your team either for players in areas that you are weak in, or for draft picks to improve your team in the future. You can't have gun players all over the field unless they are all willing to take significant unders in order to stay together.
Good summary. I'm coming to the conclusion that
1. I wonder whether some of these supposed "godfather" offers from other clubs are actually accurate;
2. If they are, whether that's actually a smart move by the club in question;
3. Lever is worth a fair whack and we should be prepared to pony up; BUT
4. We should not be going all out to match (or even go close to) a "godfather" offer just because "young gun / club should not be losing any more players";
5. He'd be a loss, but we've got some reasonable cover in his role; and
6. If we can turn him into the right combination of draft picks, trades and salary cap, then fine, he can go, and we might end up better off for it.

- OK, supporters are entitled to by cynical about that last point. Let's see.

Thankfully we have a squad of Talia, Keath, Hartigan, Otten as talls not to mention a decent array of 'tallish mediums' in Kelly, Doedee, Cheney, Smith, Seedsman.

I'd love Lever to stay but not at an inflated price.

As usual, I doubt this is a money issue, more of a girlfriend issue.

BTW it's still all quiet on the Gov front as well unfortunately. Let me guess, his manager on board a 2 month Antarctic expedition?

Wasn't CJudd paid around 300k per year by Visy and the AFL approved that?
Ridiculous, we are/were either really naive or just plain incompetent.
The Judd deal was what got the AFL to act on those deals. However, his Visy sponsorship was grandfathered in (I'm guessing because Carlton would have taken it to court if the AFL challenged it, and the AFL didn't want to risk losing the court case).

So while the Visy deal was a rort, it was an AFL-approved rort.

I am becoming more partial to lever going. When looking at the age profile of our list we do have decent cover for lever (Kelly, Doedee) and a fairly young back line. If you look at our forward line they are much older. McGovern is our future in terms of a key tall.

If we get good compensation for lever and are able to use the picks to acquire an elite inside mid and we re sign gov this would be a pretty good outcome.

2017 Draft night will be fun and exciting.. we could have 3 picks in the first round.....
Our first pick which will most likely be between 14-17
Surely we get a first round pick for Lever
Surely we get a first round pick for McGovern

Thoughts?

It would be a miserable reminder that we just lost another two gun players.

If we're to lose but hope we don't .
Get sharenberg and pick 6 from Pies.
Pick 5 for Gov + give back our second.
Pick in 14-17 range of our own.
Get Menzel as a FA.

Have pick 5,6 and 14-17

Won't get a first round pick for McGovern. Probs a player and second?
We must play hard ball.. he isn't a free agent.. let west coast and Freo bid for him.. he shouldn't have the right to pick who he wants. we must get a first round pick for him

I'd actually be hoping to have fewer picks because on-traded for a A grade mid.

But much as I'm sanguine about losing one or the other (for the right price) I'd hate to lose both. Which I don't think will happen.

All this can be put at ease with a premiership this year.. win the flag who cares if Lever and Gov goes...

He's uncontracted for next yr man. I love him, want him to stay but we don't have the bargaining power compared to if he was contracted. He was a third rounder. His first yr we nursed his Achilles and this yr we've had him out for multiple weeks with a hamstring. Instead of a possible 60 odd games as a mature Ager he's sitting on about 30 with around 40 goals. Because of that I don't reckon he's gonna net a first even though we know he's X factor.

Was Trealor contracted? Was Omeara contracted?
Why do you think other teams can get true value but we cant? And just because someones a "third tall" doesnt mean shit. Whos worth more, Hartigan or Lever?
Treloar and a second for two firsts was that trade. Not two firsts, and that was for an absolute premium mid.

O'Meara was also a first and a second.

Third talls are pretty easy to find. Lever is an excellent one.

But has ANYONE gone for two firsts recently? Yet alone a defender, yet alone a third tall defender?

Your expectations are unrealistic.

Top 5-8 pick and a 20-25ish pick OR decent steak knives player is fair imo.

The term third tall is prehistoric. If people keep using that to describe Lever they are out of date.

Prehistoric? Drama queen much?

Lever is a floating intercept defender who rarely has to be accountable. He's an offensive weapon.

But also, I would have thought he plays a reasonably replaceable position.

Call me a conspiracy theorist. Lever has hamstring tightness so club sits him (wouldn't for a final I'd imagine) and they replace him with a guy who would be his replacement if he left. Here you Jake this guy goes alright eh and he's several hundred thousand cheaper than you. Lever goes on AA and suddenly says Crows don't have to come to the table it's just some details that need to be worked out.

Now you got closer to what his role is and it's not as replaceable with his leadership quality. The accountability is by design of what he has to do. Interception and create isn't it? It's counterintuitive to play down his role by suggesting he's not defending enough.
Yeah I'm suggesting that third tall is an outdated term in modern defensive strategy. And you don't need to be defensive by calling me a drama queen about it. A bit of a sooky start to your reply I would have thaught. Don't be a sook.

I'd like to keep Lever, but if he's going to go then I'd rather it be now while he's not a free agent and while his value is probably at its maximum due to consistent good form at AFL level. Same with McGovern, too, although his long stint on the sidelines this year (along with pretty patchy form in his first couple of games back) has probably knocked his value down a bit from where it might have been if he'd remained on the trajectory he was on last year.

Either way, I'm over it. Just make a damn decision one way or the other and get on with it.
