Has it occurred to anybody that the reason why Lever hasn't signed yet could be because the club has offered less money than he expects because they're working on a deal to bring one or even two midfielders and don't know how high they can go with the offer, until they are sure they got the men they're after?
I mean, it could be the club that is telling him to wait a bit longer until they can give him the final offer. It could very well be that if he knows we'll get Rockliff, he may be prepared to accept $650K instead of $750k because of the better chance to get a flag in the next 2 years?
I know the above may not be the reason, but it still is a probable reason why the deal hasn't gone ahead yet.
I hope so. If we do lose him or Gov or both(God forbid) whatever picks/$ we have had better be used to get an A grade mature midfielder rather than just go the draft with the pick.

Treloar and a second for two firsts was that trade. Not two firsts, and that was for an absolute premium mid.

O'Meara was also a first and a second.

Third talls are pretty easy to find. Lever is an excellent one.

But has ANYONE gone for two firsts recently? Yet alone a defender, yet alone a third tall defender?

Your expectations are unrealistic.
GWS got pick 7 and pick 5 and 65 for Trealor and their second rounder.
We should be able to get the same for Lever. To not get the same is a failure.
GC got a first and a second for a player who hadnt played for two years and who suffered an injury many said could be career ending. Thats all we got for the best player in the game today.

Sitting on top spot must give us some clout, if he listened to Scott so many years in the system but no GF. If he goes to the Dogs or Pies the likelihood of them getting to a GF comes with a lot of risk. Just saying:)

Wasn't CJudd paid around 300k per year by Visy and the AFL approved that?
Ridiculous, we are/were either really naive or just plain incompetent.
Yes - and the AFL approved it. His was the last 1. The AFL closed that loophole after that contract deal came to light.

It would be a miserable reminder that we just lost another two gun players.
Not at all

Think of how exciting it will be in 4 years time when our Premiership window opens again with this talent coming through.

With tex, Sloane, talia, eddie and other current stalwarts coaching these guys as recently retired players, surely we will make at least a prelim.... Oh. HANG ON A MINUTE.....

BTW - by comparing Lever to a whipping boy like Henderson, I'm obviously just pointing out people's hypocrisy.

I'd pay $650k, acknowledging that he's a great attacking and competitive beast.

Any more is foolish.
That's silly, you're rating his pay packet on the pre 2018 CBA (or you have his current value at $500k).

On 2018 numbers, I reckon he's in the $700-750k range ie roughly half of the going rate for a topline free agent mid.

What I still don't understand to this day is WHY we did it. Isn't it his manager's job to go out and find those kinds of deals for the player? Why did we get involved when his manager could just as easily have done a sponsorship deal by himself?
His manager wasn't interested in getting his player to stay in Adelaide. The fact that we arranged the Balfours deal also suggests that we instigated the 2nd round draft pick side contract.

Two points.
1. If he's similar to Easton Wood, then why are the Bulldogs so desperate to get Lever?
2. How much money is Wood on and can you post a link to where his salary is listed?
That is an interesting question is Lever worth more than Easton Wood in terms of salary

Was Trealor contracted? Was Omeara contracted?
Why do you think other teams can get true value but we cant? And just because someones a "third tall" doesnt mean shit. Whos worth more, Hartigan or Lever?
A Grade Mids vs 3rd Tall.

As much as we all rate Lever I really can't see him ever holding down a Key Position Defensive role on the KPF's going around in the AFL nowadays, he's a 3rd Tall intercepting marking defender.
Do we sell the farm to retain him??
If you think he's worth the $850K + p/a that's being touted fine. I don't.
That kind of money is A grade midfielder/KPP type money IMO. $700K would be tops the more I think about his role.

Hartigan was a mature age recruit from the VFL who went undrafted in his draft year and following drafts, Lever was a 1st Round Draft Pick.

I've never rated Hartigan and had hoped we would look to upgrade his position, at best I see him as serviceable so I don't see the relevance, my big hope is Keath comes on and Hartigan becomes depth. Maybe if Lever leaves he could be tried in Lever's current role as his best asset is his speed.

Treloar had shown more and was a hotter commodity - if we get a top ten pick and a future first for Lever and our second, we've done well.

Hawthorn overpaid for O'Meara, in my opinion. But he was a 22 year old who had looked like he would be the best player in the game prior to his injury, so i guess they wanted to roll the dice.

In any event, we managed to take a free agent and upgrade the position of the first rounder and get an additional second round pick. That's nothing like what happened with GCS.

Im not saying he is worth 850k, the market is saying he is worth that. So if thats the value they put on him then they can pay that value when they trade for him.
If the 2014 draft was redone today Jake would be top 3. A random top 5 trade pick is only 50% chance of getting a player of his quality, so if they want a guarenteed top 3 pick with no risk, then they pay double.

I agree, if we traded out Lever and our second for two firsts we have done ok.

If he does go the ideal scenario might be to wangle an early 2018 draft pick into the deal and that probably involves getting clubs like the GCS etc involved somehow. We need to go all out to get 1st round picks in the 2018 Super Draft for Lever and McGovern if we lose them.
