I wonder if anyone has pointed out that the cost of living is 12% more in Melbourne.
I am sure he knows. But he will buy a nice house which will be where he wants to live long term anyway. I still believe he would stay with us even for slightly less money than others. But if the difference is too much he is gone. I am ok with that too because we have to keep our heads here.

I feel like I am the only one left that still has confidence he will stay. I think it would turn anybody's head, including everybody who is posting on this board, the offers he is getting. But I also think that the imminent chance of multiple premierships is also going to be decisive. I don't think going to Collingwood would be attractive to him right now, compared to staying with the Crows and the belief he must have that he can win not just 1, but 2 or 3 flags here. But ultimately if the difference in offers is too much he will go and really I can understand that. Depends on how much he wants a premiership over his career vs the duty he has to his family to set them up for life over the course of a very short career. Its almost selfish to stay and win premierships if its costing your family a million bucks.

IMO it's almost impossible to get a read on the Lever situation, not to mention we are seeing a change in the landscape on how In-Demand Players with their Managers manage negotiations with the club

Lever himself has said it's not a bad position to be in tonne in demand, it's also no surprise that Lever has pulled back on his public comments on wanting to stay as this would be done by the direction of his Manager in order to get Adelaide's absolute best deal in he table

In future what we will see more of in particularly with players in high demand is leaving the decision late which allows the Manager to introduce not only commercial tension but also use other interest as a credible threat to get the best deal from the current club

Yes some players will obviously leave to chase the bigger coin however others it's all about extracting the most dollars out of their current club

On one hand I'm bullish he will stay and get a vastly improved deal however it's hard to get a read on Victorian kids tht we draft
I think your read on the situation is totally wrong just as it was with Dangerfield.

Dangerfield didn't leave for the coin
Gunston didn't leave for the coin
Tippett didn't leave for the coin

And though Bock and Davis did leave for the coin it was at a time when none of the AFL clubs could realistically match that of the expansion teams

And I'll go so far as to say Lever is not leaving solely for the money, my read it there is a whole lot of family involvement in his FINAL decision which IMO he's already made...

He is clearly going.

I don't know about him, but if it was me I would want to sort my shit out and know what I'm doing.

"Waiting on the CBA"
"Managers away"
"Managers back haven't organised a time to meet him"

Bullshit, if you want to stay and resolve it, you would tell your manager to get off his arse and have it sorted.

And if that's the case he can **** off. You don't turn your back on the club 3 years after stating you want to be a ten year player.

And the club needs to get smart about this, stop drafting young Victorians who have girlfriends. It's highly likely the girl will want to go home before the player, they don't have the daily ties or bond the players do.

I would love to know what happened but it's looking pretty clear Lever is gone.

Serious question, would Carlton do a straught swap for pick 1?

If Lever decides he wants home then I dont see how this won't be a bidding war.

You can get a gun with pick 1 but it's still not 100%, they know 100% they will get a gun in Lever.

Would North give pick 2 after they miss out on Kelly and Martin?

I guess time will tell but I doubt we will be offering the most and I can guarantee if he leaves he will use home and family as his reason for leaving as we know Brisbane could trump everyone on $$$$

That's why it will be a decision based on a variety of things no doubt, one thing might be higher on the list of influence than another and we will all never truly know which one that is.

It's the weighing up of the good and bad of each side of it and making a big decision.
If he wouldn't mind going home and his partner as well, you throw in the money too, every chance it's enough to sway him.
In terms of the club environment and so on side of things, we're not the only club where a player can be happy and they know that.

The way he is talking, I get the feeling he doesn't want to say it (and he kind of doesn't want to go) but he's definitely leaning to going.

Surely the club must have to re-think who they contract out to 5AA each year. Why put up a player in the last year of his contract up so he can be asked about it each week?
Can we put a lesser player on 5AA, as they seem to drive the player elsewhere!

What happened?

Other clubs threw big offers at him and his mrs and his family have told him, take it and go home.

I personally think Lever would like to stay as he must be enjoying his football here.

If I was forced to move to Vic for a job but then when I established myself and could get the same job in SA on the same money I would be gone aswell.

Bidding wars don't exist. Players choose the club that gives them the largest contract and a trade is worked out from there

This one shits me. Pisses me off that clubs with no depth can afford these huge offers and we're penalised for developing a strong list. The same media flogs who say we offer 'unders' are the same ones who say what a great job our recruiters have done.

Let's be honest though. If we had zero depth and a weak list, we'd be creaming ourselves at the prospect of gaining a gun and being furious if we didn't

clubs with no depth aren't going to win flags.

If he's honestly weighing up success v money v family, then he can go. There should really only be 1 consideration.

As long as the money is fair, play where you'll get success and your family should be supporting you, not the other way round

It is obvious (at least to me) that these 5AA spots are part of players earning extra coin outside of their contracts. It's one of our ways of competing with the "you can earn more money in Melbourne" bullshit. Hence why we see the Dangerfields/Levers etc on 5AA and Talia doing a token 1 minute a week spot on Channel 9. There's a reason lesser profile players don't have weekly spots. In other words: I don't think the club has a choice.

Verbatim 2015 Dangerfield. Just copy and paste next year in the next contract thread. I marvel at your optimism though.

They might not do a straight swap, but they either club could be willing to do a swap of first rounders. I really hope we make a stand with the next top player that wants to leave and even send him to the draft if we cant get the deal we deserve. If Carlton/North wont do that swap they will have to spend their first on picking him up anyway. At least they will get our first. The first option is win-win, the second is lose-lose. I am ok with either.

Otherwise, I would take Gibbs and Carltons 2nd, which is going to be almost a first rounder anyway. Lever is far more valuable than Gibbs who will be 29 by next season.

We need to reconsider the drafting of players with serious girlfriends already in Victoria.
Before some jump up and down about blaming the girlfriend, it's a big added pressure to help them decide to go home.
It's not blaming them. It's not saying they grab them by the plums and say we're going home and that's all there is to it.

The partners don't have the AFL club environment to keep them a whole lot more distracted, it would be no surprise if they would want to go home a lot more than the player. Then you have the players family would be different to the partner's family. The player's family might like them home but they're invested in their son's AFL career and club he is at too. The partner's family, not so much. And then when they want to start a family, more issues again are introduced.

The other thing, if they get an Adelaide girlfriend, a whole lot more chance they're staying here.

Manager got back last week. Said he wants to stay . He'll meet with manager soon .
Hmm not sure what to believe now. Trade Leaks confirmed he did and is usually on point
we forget everything they get wrong . There was no ambiguity whatsoever in his response . He also said that all of the media speculation is miles off the mark .

He might make a bit more money short term going to Collingwood, but he'll make a hell of a lot more being a premiership player in his post football career.
He's going to make easily enough to be very comfortable for good.
And get to be back home.

And he's not at a Dangerfield type age. He has 10-12 years ahead of him, plenty of time for even a struggling club right now to turn into a power. If he goes to a struggling club anyway.
