3rd defender is a misnomer IMO.

What was easier to acquire? Lever or Hartigan? And what cost us more?

Fair enough Talia is our #1 most important defender. Lever is a different player but we'll be able to turn some cricketer or a Liam Jones spudlinger into a #2 on the cheap. Players who can intercept the ball in the air are gold and we shouldn't sell the role short.
If only we had tried out Tom Deedee before now

Report on SEN

Tim Gossage believes the figures being bandied around for Adelaide’s out-of-contract duo Mitch McGovern and Jake Lever do not represent what they are worth.

McGovern has been linked with a move home to the WA clubs, but SEN’s West Australian commentator says he is not a $700,000 a year player, believing he hasn’t proved he can be a match winner on a consistent basis.

“He’s not worth it mate ($700k), fair dinkum, blokes who have an inflated price in the market, he hasn’t had an 80 goal season,” Gossage told SEN’s The Run Home.

“His career is going to go 250 games, do it more often. Yes it was a beautiful mark, it was a clutch goal, I understand the extremities of what it meant to them and their season, but he’s got to do it all the time.

“There are better players than him going around that won’t be paid as much.

“I know he’s a good player, but $600,000 maximum, $550k.”

Also said this about lever

“Jake Lever, if you said to me he would be one of the most sought after players in the competition right now, you would lock me up and put me in a padded cell,” he said.

“I think he’s a very good footballer, but he is not in the realms of $750-800,000. They’re not worth that money.”
Gossage always says it how it is. I've always liked him.

Maybe his agent did though.
You'd expect his agent has met with Melbourne officials, and officials from Collingwood, WB's etc. It would be remiss of him not to meet, or at least have had conversations with them. Probably started last year ..

Perhaps we can lure Jason Cloke out of retirement

What I don't get is why we didn't come out and say something earlier if Lever hadn't met with Melbourne.

We had plenty of opportunities to, instead we said we were ok with him meeting other clubs.

Surely this would have been very easy for the club to put to bed.

Does anyone know if we use that supposed Noble moneyball system? Or has Nobes taken that with him? Or was it a myth?

Carries more weight with Jake refuting it in a public media format. And probably more so that they waited a nearly a week to do so.

There are three things you can take from that:

We don't care in the slightest if Lever goes

or we're also neck deep in someone and keeping it on the quiet.

or we just think this is the way the AFL is and have moved on from caring.

Maybe his agent did though.
I remember there was a story on here (and other places) about an interstate player the Crows were going to trade in (former SA boy). He was spotted in Adelaide prior to trade week and was supposedly seen undergoing a secret fitness test by the club at a suburban oval.

I knew the bloke and asked him about this rumour and whether he was going to be traded to the Crows. He was a bit confused but put it together.

He was back here for a couple of weeks after his club's season had finished, visiting friends and family. He went down to his local oval for a run a couple of times to keep his fitness up. One time he went running and had a kick of the footy with a mate, who was a Crows fan and wore a Crows singlet when he went running. Of course we never traded for him.

I wonder if Lever was spotted having coffee with someone (literally anyone in the world) who happened to be a Melbourne fan, or a Norwood fan for that matter, and was wearing a club polo?

If we responded to every report we'd probably never stop talking with the amount of speculation running through the club at the moment.

Would agree if the overvaluing of these players. It always struck me as odd that Jason Johannisen, another defender - not a KPD but still integral to the Bulldog's backline and a Norm Smith medallist to boot was re-signed for around the 550-600k mark.

And you know this how???

#delusional
Yeah given he has blokes on the current Board and in Administrative positions at the club he played with in Premierships and the camaraderie they would have no doubt built up over time I found that a bit hard to believe too.

I must be old fashioned because what I don't get is all these 18 year old guys we seem to draft are in permanent relationships, is this a new trend?
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say young girls are less likely to leave a famous footy player earning hundreds of thousands a year than they are to leave an 18 year old living with his parents and doing an arts degree.

So, Jake Lever said he didn't meet with Melbourne. "Never happened."

Ok.

Why didn't he say: "I didn't meet with Melbourne. Never happened. In fact I haven't met with any club."

We like to think purple monkey dishwasher type reporting doesn't happen, but there is almost zero cost for reporting trade *rumours* as fact.

And what is worse is that in the current media environment someone suggesting something on the radio gets reported as "Lloyd/Ling/Carey says X is likely to move" and that becomes "Most now believe he is gone"

Now sure Lever might be gone, but cripes going off of media reports is crap. At least with interviews - whether or not you believe him - you have the actual words to go by, not someone's version of events
