He might make a bit more money short term going to Collingwood, but he'll make a hell of a lot more being a premiership player in his post football career.
Yup

Can't turn around without seeing Ben Marsh's mug on the TV, in the papers on Billboards

Enough is enough Ben, you making trump look underexposed

What I don't get is why we didn't come out and say something earlier if Lever hadn't met with Melbourne.

We had plenty of opportunities to, instead we said we were ok with him meeting other clubs.

Surely this would have been very easy for the club to put to bed.
Or melbourne didn't come out and say it. Still stinks

So, Jake Lever said he didn't meet with Melbourne. "Never happened."

Ok.

Why didn't he say: "I didn't meet with Melbourne. Never happened. In fact I haven't met with any club."
He sounds like Danger. He is leaving, no ifs or buts. He does not even sound like he is really negotiating with the club.

I remember when Jenkins was talking last year. He said he wanted to stay with the club but just needed to work through a few things. Lever is not saying anything even close.

It is what it is. You can be one of the best teams in the comp and you still can't keep them. Go figure!!

Regarding players leaving and having family ties and girlfriends etc, I don't think it's really reasonable to expect every player to stay. Some of them are going to be lured home or even to other clubs away from home for any number of reasons. All you can really do is try to make your club as attractive as possible by building a strong culture and winning matches so that they have added incentive to stay.

What annoys me is why we've been so poor at luring big names back home. There's only two teams in SA, you'd think we would have a pretty good shot at picking up some quality SA talent. It's not like SA boys don't have family or girlfriends when they're recruited. But other than Betts, the only SA boys who were rated at all when we got them (Thompson and Jacobs) only fell into our laps when Port turned their noses up.

Losing the likes of Dangerfield, Tippett, Gunston, Davis, and potentially now Lever and/or McGovern would be a lot easier to stomach if we were able to attract quality SA boys back home at the same rate, or hell, even half the rate would be nice.

thats my issue here, he said everything he needed too.

It was more the issue of what he didn't say that concerns me the most.

I remember there was a story on here (and other places) about an interstate player the Crows were going to trade in (former SA boy). He was spotted in Adelaide prior to trade week and was supposedly seen undergoing a secret fitness test by the club at a suburban oval.

I knew the bloke and asked him about this rumour and whether he was going to be traded to the Crows. He was a bit confused but put it together.

He was back here for a couple of weeks after his club's season had finished, visiting friends and family. He went down to his local oval for a run a couple of times to keep his fitness up. One time he went running and had a kick of the footy with a mate, who was a Crows fan and wore a Crows singlet when he went running. Of course we never traded for him.

I wonder if Lever was spotted having coffee with someone (literally anyone in the world) who happened to be a Melbourne fan, or a Norwood fan for that matter, and was wearing a club polo?
I remember a few years ago Jesse White was in SA over trade week, which sent of a flurry of rumours that he was working out with the Power. All it was was his GF is/was from Adelaide and they came home to visit her family and they were spotted having lunch in the Central Markets.

I think part of the problem is you put an 18 year old into that Melbourne environment and they grow into it, it's hard to get a lot of them to come back to "sleepy 'ol Adelaide".

I was just thinking something along these lines. If things get bad enough with the Vic go-home factor, maybe the club could establish a Melbourne training/club-offshoot site.

So some players could live in Melb and train together early in the week - with IT communications, they could easily stay in close touch with the Adelaide group. Then if the Crows have an Adelaide game, the Melb players fly over for Thurs/Fri training before the match. If we have a Melb game, the Adelaide group fly over and do likewise.

Wouldn't help with WA players though.

And we could get Darren Burgess to organise our fitness from Real Madrid or wherever the hell he is

( I do love the idea and can see it happening in years to come)

I think a big driver in him deciding to go is seeing how Dangerflog's career has evolved at Geelong.

Danger went from being a star player to arguably the face of the AFL.

Regular media gigs, the surfing suit promo, getting love from the umpires, the inevitable sponsorship with Swisse (seriously you never see a Port or Crows player sponsored by them) and becoming a much better player on the field, it would have to play in the minds of all the Vic boys on our list.

He was directly denying a media report. He's not going to come out and rebuke reports that haven't been made.
This thread doesn't exist and the media isn't asking him about his contract because we're worried he will go to Melbourne Football Club specifically.

Crows fans... don't believe everything you read in the media. I did NOT meet with Melbourne. Sure... I've already agreed to terms with a different Victorian club but I am NOT going to the Demons. You can't take that to the bank. Stop worrying over nothing.

It's all moot anyway. Apart from signing with us there's nothing he can do or say that will appease us so every word that leaves his lips is a waste of breath.

And where could that information have come from? They have a very shallow listand their 22 relies heavily on Danger and Selwood. Geelong traded without submitting an RFA offer for a reason. And it wasn't because they didn't think 5 x $800k wouldn't get it done.
Geelong added 4 quality first 22 players to their list in that off season

Patrick Dangerfield
Zac Smith
Scott Selwood
lachie henderson

They couldn't get Dangerfield as a free agent and make the other additions

Anyone who believes we spooked them out of making a FA offer is just plain stupid

I agree with all of this. Guv is very good - but he is third behind Tex and JJ, and still a baby in KPF terms. Lots of upside, but a lot of upside still to go.

And I love Jake, but I think 750k is way at the upper end of what he is worth right now

Problem is the market price might just be stupid.
Gov is behind Tex and Lynch. JJ is a contract mistake we're lumbered with ala DMack

3rd defender is a misnomer IMO.

What was easier to acquire? Lever or Hartigan? And what cost us more?

Fair enough Talia is our #1 most important defender. Lever is a different player but we'll be able to turn some cricketer or a Liam Jones spudlinger into a #2 on the cheap. Players who can intercept the ball in the air are gold and we shouldn't sell the role short.

Take your pick Rankine or Lukosius look to be top end prospects even this far out and Rozee and Hateley not that far back either.
Will they follow the typical SA path of being touted as top five chances a year out, then sliding with one falling somewhere in the late teens, a couple in the rookie draft and one staying in the SANFL?
