JJ pretty much confirmed on 5AA that his contract doesn't have a trigger in his contract to increase with the CBA increase.
Good.

Hopefully we only gave players, at best, a 10% rise which is what the AFL was informing clubs the cap would increase by in 2017.

If we fixed any rise (if we even gave one) at the AFL's predicted 10% rather than the actual cap increase, we'd have a massive war chest

All clubs have to have at least 95% of their cap used this year

Some clubs have 95% of their cap committed for the next 5 years

Some don't

That's called a way chest.
But how many players are retained how many are cut some clubs have lost as many as 8 or 9 players in a season 25% of their squad

None have accounted for salaries for the next 5 years

Channel 7 seem pretty confident both Lever and McGovern are staying... expect levers deal to be finalized now the CBA done and McGovern to continue negotiations and expected to stay.
Hoping that Theo has some good inside intel seeing as he works for the club

Apparently we along with WC are the only clubs that havent passed along the CBA rise automatically to our players. Wether that means we have spare cap now or not I dont know.
Does this mean in terms of contracts negotiated up until now or all players in the list?

Why would any club apply to all players if not having to? If It was intended it would automatically apply to all players that surely would be stipulated in the agreement.

If 16/18 are passing it on, is that an advantage to us 2 as that's essentially 20% more salary cap than the rest to work with, or does it leave players disillusioned that their club is the only one selling them short?

What about Essendon, Zaka out as suddenly his reason to delay looks silly if there was an auto increase included.

I can't get my head around this comment (not a go at you as passing it on, just interested in the overall context of it). Was it elaborated on?

Yes they do. They have pretty sophisticated modeling software and a full time list manager. They know pretty well what the salaries are going to be over the next 5 years.

They don't do it on a year by year basis.

If we didn't factor in CBA increases as a rule across the board maybe that's the real reason Dangerfield left

Do they know who will be cut in 3 years

It's not engraved in stone. They have a fair idea of the cap space that will be used on player movements and it will be constantly adjusted when different matters come up.

E.g. JJ wants an extra $50k per year over 5 years, they would model that out over the 5 years to see what capacity they have then.

Also would have Gooch factored in for an increase after next year.

And then Kelly's agent contacts us and says let's talk, and Reid is working round the clock to find room for him.

Im not sure myself. I remember that we wouldnt add a cap increase into Levers offer.
Maybe this is where our mysterious Tipp & Danger war chest has gone. We paid overs for players contracts with the understanding there was no cap increase allowance and now we have the CBA finished our war chest is now available to use? Master stroke if true.

Why would that worry him??

Makes JJ's deal not look too bad now.

Yep, if we did get home for $575k then that would be $690k if you apply a 20% uplift.

Equally, if Mackay is on $400k pa, then that is only a bit above the new $371k average salary for 2018, vs the 2017 average salary of $309k.

Having said that, with our better players we don't want them getting disgruntled that they are getting way underpaid because they are locked in at a low(ish) price. Careful management required here.

Edit: Could use contract extensions to lock them in for longer with the lure of a bit of an uplift. Not sure who this applies to though - need to check the contract status thread.

Oh, I didn't mark realise the $12m applies from this year.

If other teams have been giving automatic adjustments in their contracts then the extra $2m will pretty much be gone.

But if we've been working on an assumed 10% increase then only $1m of our increase will be gone.

We should theoretically have a spare $1m this year to play with, of which we can roll 5%(?) forward.
