There was a lot more discussion about Cloke going to Carlton and talk about Walker to GWS than there ever was about Beams.

Honestly, you're either a troll or deeply depressive.
Yeah yeah im a troll. That makes you sleep better at night. Every man and his dog knew Cloke was staying. It turns out he never even spoke to another club, he was never leaving. As if Freo stood a chance. He played his hand for the big bucks. Also while people thought GWS would make a play for Tex with him been from NSW and all, it was never near the speculation of Danger or Buddy or Ablett.
Go back and read the Brisbane and Collingwood forums where mid last year there was heaps of talk Beams was going to Brisbane.

Sloane's idea about a payment post retirement has merit. After retirement a payment can be less money, but because of a presumably lower tax rate, less is lost to tax. Not all players go on to have lucrative deals post playing days. With FA, ~half of the pay increase is lost as tax......
The problem with post-retirement bonuses is clubs will use it to advantage, a club could say to a player who is 30+ "we'll only pay you minimum because we know if you go anywhere else you will lose you're $1mil loyalty bonus, so we know you will stay no matter what"

Sloane clearly wants to stay loyal to Adelaide and play his entire career here. Im sure Adelaide would trip over themselves to match any offers coming his way if they had the cap space to do it. I feel for blokes like him that have to make the decision to leave a club because it would be financially ridiculous for him to do anything else.
They drove a dump truck full of money up to my house. I'm not made of stone!

Actually, the speculation surrounding Tex leaving was huge. Probably bigger than Buddy. It's easy to sit here now and say the speculation wasn't as fierce as it was with someone who actually ended up leaving, but you'll struggle to find an article strongly linking Buddy with Sydney. Sure, quite a few people thought Buddy would leave the Hawks, but there was nobody saying 'he's already signed with ...' like there was with Tex.

Contract talks on hold until the end of the year, Connors was very confident he was going. I wonder if he was just about over the line with GWS until craigy got the arse.

Interesting article in the rag re FA and the push for a shorter qualifying period. It mentioned a players survey on the motivation for FA.

The top 3 responses were more money, extending their career and club location.

No mention of club success

I think if craig stayed Walker very likely would have left. I also felt at the time that Walker was being very coy about not re-signing until it became apparent that Davis was getting the sweetheart deal to go to GWS and at that point when it was obvious it wasnt going to be him he very quickly got his act together at the crows.

Imo Tex always had is act together the issue was with Craigy

I am a firm believer on you pick players for the strengths and attributes that he brings to the team however Craigy largely ignored these strengths in preference to play him in the sanfl to work on areas of improvement and at a time when the team would have been better served with Tex's strengths

To often coaches get a little obsessed with a players deficiency and with this largely ignore the attributes they bring to the team, this is why I loved it when Walsh said that players need to work on deficiencies however they need to keep building on their weapons that they bring to the team

In no way was the hype / speculation regarding Tex bigger than Buddy. Walker hadn't even played 40 goals when all this was going on.

There was a bit of speculation going on in the small fishbowl that is Adelaide - but in the broader AFL community - Walker was a promising 21 year old kid - not a marquee player.

The most significant Danger news of the week:

Roo was seen having lunch with Danger at the Alma yesterday.

An ultimatum from the Roo perhaps, a discussion about his next contract, or just an innocent lunch date? Or a bit of all 3?!

No, they couldn't get Tex so they pushed is salary up to squeeze someone else out and got Davis. No one would choose Davis over Tex, especially a club from NSW who desperately wants home grown talent.

You do know they are both part owners in the Alma?

Co-owners of pub have lunch at said pub.

You're probably reading too much into it.

Or maybe Craigy is part responsible for some of the high standards tex exudes today eg leadership, professionalism on thè training track including elite fitness and attention to his rehab and finally defensive skills. All things that Craigy wanted tex to improve and he has done it in spades

I'd be fascinated to understand why we don't give him up to 6 years.
Because if he breaks down, gives up the game, we have a huge salary cap issue. I think four years is acceptable and maybe an option based on performance for one more.
