We enter this year full of beans. So do most of the other teams.
If we drop a touch in confidence or suffer injuries (eg Egan) the tables can turn quickly. We ounce again have a strong team with not as much depth as last year. I am sure that this will be the feeling at some stage during the year.

I am concerned at the over the top attitude of a lot of the posters. Lets temper this with a dose of reality until we see how we are going during the season

reality is we are the best side in the country. We all understand that injuries or one fatal plane crash could doom the entire side but why bother thinking about things that might happen and are not in our control.

if you cant enjoy it when your side is this dominant then why bother caring at all.

Cats could go 25-0 this season. How is that for reality!

Bugger that! We're not the ones playing. One of the great things about this team, as opposed to any other Geelong team I've seen, is that we don't drop our head. In the past when luck turned against us or another team came at us, we used to go to water. Last year that didn't happen, whenever a team came back or some other factor saw us fall away, we always had the character and leadership to fight back and get ourselves back into the match. And it will happen this year too.

BS. i saw the team turn to water at least three times last year and over a stretch during the opening stanza of the season. if that gets extended to 5 or 6 occasions heads can -and- will drop.

good grief

lets be cocky buggas about geelong. how much crap i have had to put up with essendon, carlton and adeliade supporters over the years, and to just not return the favour would be no fun.

i think the beauty with geelong is that, we know what they went through, we remember 06 and those years it spent building up, plus all those grand final loses that we had. so i think that we have a pretty strong grounding in reality.

plus, what some ppl mite forget is that we are awesomely rad.

Some of the Brisbane supporters are talking about our depth being as good as thier's in 2001-2004, So even If we get some injurys I feel we would still be the superior team in the comp.
The only thing that worries me, is St.Kilda getting there sh!t together.

When was that? Yeah at times we would play like dogs for a quarter or two or even three, but that is something that is unavoidable. The important thing was that we almost always were able to put that behind us and do whatever we had to do to get over the line where in the past we would just get steam-rolled.

I agree with Couchy555. We don't want to be too arrogant, but if we can't have high expectations this year, then what's the point of loving footy.

We have copped it for so many years from other successfull team supporters, so lets enjoy the fact that for the first time in 44 years, we come into the season as the best team and reigning premiers.

We kept a lid on it all year in 2007, so lets blow the thing to the sheisenhousen in 2008. If we don't win the flag, then so be it, as long as the boys give it all.

Reality is we will start slow like we did last year and build momentum. Thats how i see things happening, especially due to the way our fitness guy trains our team.

Spot on. You only have to look at the Swans in the GF years - they played poorly for about 5 or 6 weeks before turning it on. Even WC were unimpressive in the first few weeks of 2006.

The important thing is that you don't throw away your gameplan in the first few weeks if it isn't working - if you have a winning gameplan you stick to it and work to execute it better and better.

I'm actually feeling a little bit satisfied and less interested. I hope the players don't feel the same way.

If you can't celebrate the successes when your footy club wins it all, what is the point of following them? All my life I have wanted geelong to be universally regarded as the best team going around, and other teams to respect us accordingly. And now this happens and I am supposed to to put a lid on it?

Tell 'im he's dreamin'

The only "reality" that I know right now is that Geelong are an awesome combination, the team that everyone else wants to beat. And I plan on enjoying it while it lasts.

Reality is that we have 9 All Australians including the current Brownlow medal winner, the best full back in the comp, the best tagger in the comp. Our ruckman is 2nd to none. We have the best young player in the comp. And a great captain.

What's not to look forward to this year?

Confidence ain't the same thing as cockiness.

Hell, we've had our lack of success rubbed in our faces by Collingwood, Carlton, Hawthorn supporters over the years. I don't mind giving a bit back!

We have every right to be confident this year. We have a good team with some pretty decent depth still, and 15 teams who have quite a lot of catching up to do.

I guess some of us aren't happy unless they can sprout their doctrine of doom. After all they have had 44 year practice at it so winning a GF is hardly going to snap them out of it. yeah 1000 things could go wrong and we could drop off the pace. But you also have to acknowledge that 1000 things could go right too. But you stick with your doom and gloom like a typical Geelong Supporter and I will see you here after our first loss for the season when you are bagging the crap out of the team and the coaches and everything else you think wrong. Then I will know you're happy at last.

what he said ^

I was never a particular gloom and doom supporter. Was getting a bit anxious especially near the end of last year but hey I am very content now!

Honestly I am hoping for a 25-0 season this year. First team to win every game. I see no reason why we cant do it and it is pretty unrealistic as it is a monumental task but as CMF said, "you also have to acknowledge that 1000 things could go right too". If we stay fit and on the park and win the 3-4 really close games for season then there is no reason why we cant do it.

CARN THE CATTERS!

Anyone follow the NFL? The NE Patriots this year went 18-1, losing the superbowl. They were the most dominant team I think I have ever seen in a sport and lost the game in the final 2 minutes (last giants drive) to some of the arsiest play I have ever seen. So it shows that the wheels dont have to fall completely off to have your season shattered, just a small wobble or rut in the road and it is all over (Dons 1999 anyone?)

hahaah!! "doctrine of doom & gloom"!!! - that's a lil drama queenish.

pragmatism, not idealism.

in the last four years there have been many varied patches of form from the team - and we saw it in the first 5 weeks of last year.

i hope they don't lose a game all year, but i'll never been on here pumpin' 'em up excessively or alternately, deflating and writing them off.

- WTF last four years?? Four years ago Brisbane had one of the most dominant teams ever assembled still running around. What does that have to do with now?

and we saw it in the first 5 weeks of last year.
- We lost 4 games last year, 3 of those to top 6 teams by a combined total of 25 points. Yes they were patchy games but they happened early in the year when most teams are a little bit patchy with form and at the time they happened to what we thought were bad teams, but who turned out otherwise. Secondly if we lost games this year I hope it is early as all good teams usually do. Lose a couple early then hit their straps mid season and spank everyone in sight!

There is absolutely no chance barring injury that we wont finish top 4. None, zero, put your bloody house in it (for really bad odds as the bookmakers agree).

Have a look through our team, it is bloody awesome. WE ARE A BLOODY AWESOME TEAM. Yeah okay it is pumping them up but shit open your bloody eyes. We spanked the crapola out of the rest of the league last year and we will do it again this year.

What happened last year...

...was last year

Its really not all that complicated when you spend roughly 3 seconds thinking about it...

exactly.

and scotty/others if yer wanna reel off the achievements of 07 why wouldn't other recent histories be of some relevance???

LOL. Nice. But you forgot to put "/rant" when you finished ;)

I really think that the cats won't have a problem with cockiness or over confidence, they worked to long over the years to get that reward they deserved last year.
What will happen is teams will scrutinise our game plan a little harder !!!?
Thats where my next point leads into, of what we've seen during the pre-season cup what team(s) looks like copying our high risk game style.
Although i have'nt seen much of the pre season matches the crows look like copying our game style & taking us on, of the other sides during the nab cup who else looks like there going to go head to head with us!!!?

And have the cats tweaked any of there game plans, defence & onball structures!!!?
