I should really change my Alias. I’m 32 years old and hearing you old boys talk about how painful the 80s were makes me feel I’ve had it pretty bloody good. Mind you, some say last season was one of the worse...
The thing is 'Suffering' in those years losing was the norm - losing seemed part of our identity, it was part of our DNA - anything else was like the second coming of Christ... I'm not kidding as someone else on here has also said any kind of win no matter when or who it was against was cause for massive celebration... seems crazy now thinking about it...

Second from memory!
We beat them at Moorabin on a pretty wet deck in 84 I think!
Remember It well for the engrossing duel between a young Plugger and Bruce Doull!
I only remember that day for two things.

-Stewie did a magnificent job with the sprinklers.....it was an absolute mud heap that day.

-I just happened to be standing next to the Social Club manager of the time...…..the standing area behind the seats on the first deck.....Max someone I think……..who turned around to someone when we appeared home and said..."It's going to be an absolutely huge night in here tonight"

Cheers dct66!
Nice to be recognised for my useless talent!

That 1 point loss in 87 was at princess park with Tom Alvin kicking the
Winning goal after the siren!
I think the frenetic last quarter with Rocket Rod Owen going berserk he kicked 7 or 8
Went for about 5 hours!
From memory....the final siren went at about the 35 or 36 minute mark of the last 1/4.

We just couldn't beat them back in those days....was incredibly frustrating.....so many close finishes.

I was in Adelaide at the time and was listening to the game on the car radio.....it was played at night from memory.....once the final siren went I thought..."F*** it ".....I'm off too the casino for a few scotches.

We were in front in the last few minutes.....then they kicked the goal that won it for them....to this day I'd swear that John Elliot was in the timekeepers box with his finger on the button.....he wasn't going to push it until they were in front!

Those years were character building if nothing else.

I reckon the little league won more games.

100+ beltings were all to common and frequent.
Sadly, i used to actually check the little league scores in the hope we would get a win. :)

Growing up in the Mallee i never got to games, which was probably a blessing in hindsight. The downside is I only ever got to experience Morrabbin once. Jeez it was good tho

Max Williams. Went on to be manager of Victoria Club
Back then Social club and Football club were seperate entities.
Max would cry every Monday after a big night at the social club when the very very broke football club would raid the social club bank account to meet wages. FACT

Was at that Carlton game and the quarter went well past 35 min..cheats then nothing changes.

Best bit many years later was our last game of the season was our home game played at Princes Park. Blues were about to win their first wooden spoon and after the game there were wooden spoons everywhere on their centre wicket in the urinals in the social club.... magnificent.

It's the little things that you celebrate.
Much rather have what is it 14 cups

That’s so bloody depressing!! No wonder my old man is a nut job haha
Welcome to our world of pain, Suffering!
Some of us are still sane even, which is quite remarkable!

Not me though! This club has sent me batshit crazy. I now walk with a lisp
And talk with a limp! You don't want to know what my Johnson does!

They were dark dark years VDS66.

The horror of horrors for me was the start of the 1985 season.

4 100 point beltings in the first 7 rounds....the first 3 games were 100 point beltings.

The first 2 games were both at Moorabbin......Syd belted us by 110...….Carlton by 140 the next week...….can't tell you how depressing it was standing at ground level in the Social Club watching that stuff.....it's seared into my memory.

That's why for me.....the years 2003 thru 2012 were something to savior.....I never took any win from that period for granted.

Remember Max well. He kicked me out of the social club on several occasions. Had to duck him for about 2 seasons in a row. Eventually had to front up mid week and come to an agreement with him re. my enthusiasm.

We sort of turned it around with the arrival of Doc and Plugger and we dared to believe again.

91-92 finals. 93 a ripping start and then as night turns to day we imploded over the Winmar mess... Until 97.

Talk about a boom-bust cycle...

Still have the Saints 92’ season highlights on VCR. When Sandy Roberts screams ‘Hilton Hotel has scored’ for some reason just sticks in the memory..

I'm actually more resilient than quite a few on here who were raised during our better era.

You raise a generation where everyone gets a lolly bag at the party, and as soon as they miss out they lose the plot and don't know how to deal with it.

I blame we the baby boomers.

We will be fine.

I assumed this was Jeff Hilton but he only played 5 games for the Saints in '91 and one in '92. He did score (a point) in that 1992 game and Sandy is a good Saints man so it could have got a bit over-excited.
