Here is something I found. pdf

Trevor Sutton

Yes, I've seen that article before. Pure fantasy land !
688 games over 25 seasons - that is average of 27 games per year without a miss (yet he suffered all those injuries listed in the article).

He's also quoted as saying "I was on $120 a game with Footscray in 1971" and then later in piece talks about injury when at Footscray
being collected by De Wolde of Hawthorn in a practice game [presume he's claiming that to be 1971 as well].

When Footscray announced the final list ready for the 1971 season a few days before Round 1, the names do not include Sutton
https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=sNxUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ppADAAAAIBAJ&pg=4185,5007341

I can find ref to four practice games played by Footscray in lead up to 1971 season.
None of them mention Sutton as playing (but a certain D Cometti is trying out for them).
And note that no match vs Hawthorn occurs.

Yes I noticed a few tall tales but thought I would post it . More as an interest piece but also to see how it stands. My thoughts on the games was that he continuously played South then North. I think Northern Territory football was always played in summer.

But , yes , the tone of the article was of a braggart

Wayne Fox played at both South Launceston and Sandy Bay in 1990. He started at South after Browning gave him the boot from Hobart after the '89 Grand Final for demanding a pay increase. By mid-season he moved back to Hobart and played with Sandy Bay and was listed there in 1991 before retiring from TFL footy, I don't believe he played any games in 1991, will look it up for you though.
Played for Claremont in 1998 in the SFL.
His brother Graeme was the coach at the time.
Kicked 97 goals in 1989 (not 79), needed 8 in the Grand Final and kicked 5.

VAFA legend Bill Pearson's total of 1023 can be extended to 1080 by adding on his interstate goals.

Actually, Pearson should have 1079 goals. It's only one goal, but it's good to be accurate wherever possible. Here is something I posted on Footypedia on September 25 last year in the Records and Bests section to explain it.

"Bill Pearson, who played for Old Scotch in the VAFA during the 1930s, often has his VAFA goal total quoted as 1,023, but after looking through the relevant microfilm, I have him finishing with 1,022. The error would seem to come from the 1935 season. After round 7 that season, both The Age and The Argus list Pearson as having kicked 53 goals to that stage. After his next game, in which he kicked 5 goals, he is quoted in both newspapers as now having 59 instead of 58. Pearson's total is then extended to 68, not 67, after he kicked 9 in his next game, and it is this total with the "extra goal" that keeps being added to as the season progresses.

When adding on the 57 goals Pearson kicked in interstate games versus other amateur leagues, his senior total can now be given as 1,079."

Wickham's 2014 season tally of 100 was done in just 10 games, including a club and NTFA record of 28 goals in a game.

Alle De Wolde was only 15 in 1971 (born 27/12/1955) I think Sutton meant 1975.

Hear him one day on the Coodabeens and said he played for Claremont and was going to try out with Carlton but a Footscray official meet him at Tullamarine so he tried out there instead.

You could be right about Sutton meaning 1975 because Footscray did play a practice match against Hawthorn that year:
https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=Z1oQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=OpIDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4483%2C3831055

Here are the final lists as released by the clubs just before the 1975 VFL season gets under way:
https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=DPJUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=OpIDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5951,6582125

Trevor Sutton's name is nowhere to be seen in the Footscray section.

It seems Footscray signed Trevor Sutton from East Fremantle in 1972. He is meant to have played with that (WA) club, so why would he have said that he went from Claremont to Footscray (perhaps in 1975)? Did he decide to have a second crack at the VFL, or did he (most likely) get it wrong when talking to the Coodabeens - as mentioned by Todman - about his career? He obviously never managed any senior games at Footscray, but it would be interesting to find out what happened in 1972, at least.

"The Bulldogs have signed promising West Australian player Trevor Sutton, 20, who showed out in last Sunday's senior practice match.

Sutton, an East Fremantle ruck-rover, will have no problems with a clearance, as he is doing his National Service training here."

https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AAIBAJ&sjid=sZADAAAAIBAJ&pg=5606,127932&hl=en (The Age, Mar 1 1972)

"Footscray produced a rugged recruit named Trevor Sutton in its main practice game yesterday, but he is no relation to former Bulldog champion Charlie Sutton.

Trevor, a 6 ft. 1 in., 13.7 ruck-rover, comes from East Fremantle.

He is doing national service training here and was sighted by Footscray on its trip to Puckapunyal last week."

https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19720228&printsec=frontpage&hl=en (The Age, Feb 28 1972 - page 10/12)

Sutton is named as being on the Footscray final list for 1972, though it does say he's from South Fremantle (the same thing happens a week later)!

https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19720320&printsec=frontpage&hl=en (The Age, Mar 20 1972 - page 10/11)

Checking through the Football Record from 1972 Sutton's name doesn't seem to be there. It's not to be found in any of Footscray's squads of 50 or so players, or in the Reserves best players/goalkickers. Perhaps he left before the season started for some reason, or was injured?
==============================================
Sutton reckons his worst injury was at Footscray when Hawthorn defender Alle De Wolde broke his
left rib and sternum bone with a vicious shirtfront. ‘‘I was playing in a practice match and had already
taken a mark and kicked a goal and thought how easy is this,’’ he recalled ‘‘Three minutes later I
did it again and bang, De Wolde gave me a big welcome to the big league.’’

‘‘I was on $120 a game with Footscray in 1971 while Gardiner was on $800,000 a year at West
Coast and Lockyer $700,000 at Collingwood.
