Shame on fox sports, herald sun, robbo and any other parties involved in releasing this confidential information and photos to the public. Even after the AFLPA told them not to, and warned them on what effects it could have his wellbeing they still posted it. All this just for publicity... disgusting.

Anyway, well it's not unheard of for some kids with strict parents to start doing bad things once they move out. And, as stated in the article, Bennell had off-field issues since early in his first year, so his family can't say it was all gold coast. Even recruiters at the time raised concerns about his behaviour prior to getting drafted. They would be ignorant to think Bennell didn't do bad things before he was drafted.

But, that's beside the point. As playing the blame game does nothing. All I will say is that he obviously had bad influences around him and he has always for the most part had behavioural issues. If Tom Liberatore can get away with it (that's twice now I might add) then so can Bennell (as well any other players involved).

"He was serving a prison sentence when the talented midfielder was drafted and the pair have rarely spoken"
So Harley's Dad had a drug problem.. says it all really. His mother can say all she wants about having a great upbringing but when you father is never around because of drugs that's going to influence you no matter what club you are at.

So that's going to make you take drugs? How exactly does that work?

Drugs help give you a temporary release from whatever it is you are going through internally. His dad doing drugs is not automatically going to make Harley against them. Just the same as if your parents being against drugs is not going to make you automatically do them. The choice is always there to go either way.

Think you're reading too much into it Ben. The article might be trying to spin it that way but nowhere does it quote a family member blaming the Suns.
Anyway Josh Caddy is clearly the one at fault here. I remember an old article saying he and Harley were spotted down the Casino early in their first year. Glad he left. Harley could have stooped to carrying out break and enters by now if that bloke was still here;)

I think that Karmichael Hunt is a big fat K.Hunt! (say it fast) :)

With all due respect and as much sensitivity given the events of the day, today is probably a good day for getting everything out on the table
Karmichael Hunt to do a tell all interview on Channel 7 Queensland.

You just have to ask why
Surely he would just want it to all go away?
Given he's unlikely to get another big money contract for football of any code anywhere ever again I guess he's vacuuming up cash wherever he can

Read the CM interview with Campaigner today and he says he is not a snitch because he had to or he was going to jail

Correct me if I am wrong but isnt a snitch EXACTLY someone that gives up others to save themselves? Or is that a lying dog. Either way I wouldn't want to be either

To me is was a self serving piece of crap that where he try's to be the victim but let's look at the evidence
  • He took massive money to be a leader at a club trying to build a culture
  • He gave drugs to vulnerable young men
  • He rolled over like a golden retriever on his mates when he could of just said " I am not sure who took what as I was affected by drugs
  • And now he is playing the victim
What a complete kampaigner that has sunk even further down in s**t list.

.

He's a professional athlete who's been told he's the centre of the Universe since he was 12 years old
I'm sure he thinks it's everyone's prime objective to do what's right for Karmichael Hunt

The old adage (and a lyric in a Dire Straits song) "when you point your finger 'cause your plan fell through, you've got three more fingers pointing back at you".

Those who commit crimes .... and let's be clear on that because drug possession is a crime under the DMA .... almost always blame someone else for why / how they ended up in their predicament.

Until they are prepared to take ownership and responsibility for their own actions and blame themselves and not others for making poor choices, then they will continue to offend or fu€£ up.

I don't care when this happened, or who dobbed in who. If you're caught using illegal illicit drugs you should be shown the door ..... and don't let it hit you on the ass on the way out.

What happens when marijuana is legalised? Are you okay with players smoking it up then?

What if cocaine is decriminalised?

What part of recreational drugs are you actually opposed to? The legality of it, or the impact it has on the body? If it's the latter, surely a complete ban of alcohol 365 days a year would be okay?

I'm never quite sure why people are so determined to criticize players who used recreational drugs when statistics show alcohol has a much worse impact on overall health. Obviously ice and meth is ******* terrible and I don't condone it at all, but the focus should be on player wellbeing - not what the government decides is acceptable to do in your spare time.

1. Highly unlikely it would ever be in our lifetime in this country

2. No

3. Definitely will never be in any lifetime, it's an opiate and if that were legalised then the Pandora's Box is open and it would pave the way for all other drugs to follow suit. So you don't really have to worry about considering this question because the answer will always be the same.

4. Both actually. But I will add two more parts (a) the addictive nature of them and (b) the effect is has on the people around them and the rest of the community in general (lying, stealing, burglary, assaults, domestic violence, et al).

5. I see and have to deal with the effects of drugs and alcohol every day, so I don't need to see statistics on this stuff because I live in the real world of it and quite frankly, it's one area I would consider myself a qualified (possibly bordering on expert) witness.
The difference with alcohol in relation to part 1 is that it IS legal even though I have an issue with part 2 the effect on the body, particularly if you are an elite sports person and you drink regularly and/or to excess because your performance will eventually suffer.
However I still have most concern with alcohol for parts a & b which I added in part 4. for the same reasons as above.

Because alcohol is legal the ban or limiting of consumption lies with the club and the individual, so my opinion on 365 day ban probably doesn't matter.

Yep meth / ice is really bad and rampant at the moment, but all of the other drugs mentioned are just as bad in their own right. There is a reason Govt's make these illegal, they don't just decide what's acceptable in your spare time on a whim.

Finally I would like to say that what people do in their spare time is their business, but if it's illegal it doesn't make it okay. AFL footballers have a responsibility to their team mates, their coaches and their club to do it right. But more importantly, footy doesn't survive without us ... the supporters who pay memberships and go to the games and spend their money and buy the merchandise, etc .... because without us the game ceases to exist at elite level. We pay our $$$ and we (well at least 'I') expect players to be law abiding people who don't take illicit drugs and don't turn up pissed for work and are at their very best that they can be when they run out on the field to play in front of my family, your family and all of the kids who wear their jumpers and say "one day when I grow up I want to be as good as ..............".

That's why I believe I have a right to criticise players who use illegal (I refuse to use recreational .... it's not *ing skateboarding in the park) drugs and I don't batter an eyelid if they get sacked for it either.

The AFL's policy is 3 strikes
Your personal prejudices are fine for the BigFooty soapbox but don't reflect the realities of a modern society or the AFL's current approach, or indeed the modern day judiciary
