James Fantasia said:
One player Adelaide does not expect to get its hands on is gun South Adelaide midfielder Ryan Griffen, who should be the first Croweater selected. The SA under-18 captain will go in the top five picks.

"I think Ryan will be gone by pick 8," Fantasia said.

"If he's not he would come under consideration very strongly. In fact it would be pants down and lap around the table."

hehehe, we are one of the worst offenders of this.

and collingwood. every draftee they have seem rated at least top 20 by the recruiting team. i dont think this is them lying, i just think its a reflection of the quality of their talent identification process (or seemingly lack there of).

Spot on. Every year you hear the Pies saying "I can't believe he slipped through to us, we're absolutely stoked".

"we had him at no. 3 on our draft board"

collingwood have a very big draft board, that can fit a lot of guys onto the one slot

Lap it up and enjoy one last year of Judkins saying 'We cant believe we got <Pick 55> where we did, we had him in our Top 5!'.

And somewhere in Tasmania, Danny Roach smiled.

I love Rucci
PORT ADELAIDE'S pre-draft planning labouriously identified the top 51 teenagers in Australian football in anticipation of the Power staying in the AFL player lottery until pick No. 51.

That the AFL premier's five draftees were rated by the Power as top-30 picks - when Port had just two calls in the top 30 (at No. 11 and No. 19) - suggests the Power made Saturday's national draft stretch deeply and productively.

Actually, I solemnly believe that Collingwood does rate these late picks that highly on their boards. Think about it: Ben Johnson, Tristan Walker, Matthew Lokan, Julian Rowe etc.

Compared with Danny Roach, Bo Nixon, Billy Morrison...

I wouldn't question that they had those late picks high on their draft board. I'd just question why they're drafting people who should presumably be so low on their draft board so highly...

When you think about it every single club is pretty much only going to recruit guys they have rated in their top-30.

There will only be 60-ish picks. Of those there will be some recycled players, some older state league guys, and some father-sons who clubs won't bother to include in their top-30. Then some clubs will recruit for need, take some roughies. One club will have a kid ranked 25 and another will have that same kid at 40.

By time pick 60 comes around one of the club's top-30 will still be available. It is not as though a club is going to get to pick 20 and choose the guy they have at 50.

So they (by definition) will all recruit guys in their top-30. By definition they will be happy with the kid they took at each pick (otherwise they would have taken someone else).

For all of you idiot Pie knockers, you'll be pleased to know that Balme was on SEN this morning and said that we would have taken Chris Egan with Pick 7.

That's near enough to the "Can't believe he slipped through to our pick!" line.

Anyway, it is actually feasible for all recruiters to perenially get five guys they rate as being top thirty...even some of the guys at pick 85. It's all opinion. There were guys rated by some as first rounders who didn't even get drafted! (Edit: I probably should have read Weaver's post first).

What do you people expect them to say about these kids. "Yeah, he's a bit of a dud and he probably won't make it, but we thought we'd give him a go because the rest of them are even worse".

We all know to take what they say with a grain of salt. I can't see what the problem is.

Wells or Thompson stated that Prismall was the no1 on their checklist for pick 32. Feasible since Buddha and our new VFL coach, Leigh Tudor, were both coaches at the Jets and he went earlier than some expected.

I think we have a winner...

"We really rate Chris," Crows recruiting manager James Fantasia said of the dual Vic Metro under-18 player. "It's a bit like Graham Johncock (pick No. 67 in 2000) for us. We had Chris in our top 20 and we had pick 56 so we went over (to the draft) thinking we'd keep that pick for the pre-season draft. But when he was available, we got a nice surprise, just as we did with Graham."

Whats wrong with what was quoted there Porthos?

Just sounds like he thought Knights was a bargain that couldnt be passed over, just like when they picked Johncock late in the draft.

??????? Dont see how this is anything that could be regarded as the recruiter quote of the year.

No offence to Chris Knights, who is a player I really liked, but there is no way known he was in the top 20 players.
Chris was a certain top 10 selection but was overlooked - we got a bargain !

the crows may have rated him top20. it just seems the 15 other AFL clubs didnt. when u think about it tho, if knights was rated top 20, presumably the guys the crows took before him where rated higher than knights. which means the crows think they got 20% of the best 20 young players in the country.
