Recruiting for 2014

Has been bubbling since the Dimmy boys sent text messages during the finals. Too many blokes killed or seriously hurt from shit like that. Round 3 will be a beauty though.

United dead. Still exploring merger options. Cameron, Mines, Chappel and a few other to Tatty. Diggers will be rapped with Cameron, takes their cash for 1 year then puts the nail in the coffin taking their best players with him.

Gee, pretty big blow to the status of the WFL if Diggers drop out.

What are their merger options?

The obvious and most compatible one in terns of colours/emblem was Pimp which has already rejected them, unless Diggers agree to go across to District league? But even then it doesn't help WFL.

I guess perennial strugglers Taylors Lake might be courted for merger, but similar problems arise ie which league to play in, and I'm guessing TL wouldn't be interested in leaving HDFL.

Rumor has it that former Horsham United nugget midfielder Shane Gusman has signed as an assistant coach at natimuk under Tim Friend after being poached in a tough period for the Diggers. Could be the final nail in the coffin? Anyone else confirm this?

Gee if you wanted to recruit some players over the festive season, the murtoa pub was the place to be. Clint young, Tom lynch, Lochie Dela, Tom Dela, Lenny Clarke, John Kosch. Let's hope the burra supporters didn't shout them too many beers...anything could happen

Stawell have made a couple of big signings, landing two players from VAFA club North Old Boys/St Pat's. Todd Cleary (who has started a teaching job at the 502 primary school) is an old school winger/half back flanker who is as tough as a Monday night special $10 steak. He's managing to convince a mate to travel up the Western Highway - Chris Ford, a prodigiously talented key forward/pinch hitting ruckman. Poor mans Tucks if you will.

Cameo King, tell me this is false?? A big hit to NOBS if true, great pick up for Stawell tho. TC is a beauty, absolute dasher full of courage, and Fordy a star, very handy on field and even better off it.

expecting a tight contest this year in the WFL ( assuming united are shown the door )
by the looks of things most clubs have recruited some quality players.

Dimboola - looks like the side to beat again in 2014 , stewie farr will have them primed for round 1 and looks like have added a few more quality players to there list .

Horsham - expect them to be fitter and stronger in 2014, last year would of hurt a few of there senior players , there depth may be tested at stages, and the loss of parish might see them adjust there game plan , expect them to finish top 3,

Horsham saints - haven't heard much about the saints over the off season, I expect them to be an much improved side in 2014 , I think phil butch will bring the best out of most of there list and expect them to be around the mark this season.

Warrack Eagles - another one I haven't heard much about , the massive signing of clayton hinkley can only be a massive bonus for the eagles , I think Tim Inkster is the right man to lead the eagles forward, I wouldn't be surprised if we see another few key signings for the eagles, the town has produced a lot of quality footballers over the years and I think a few might want to come back and help the eagles push deep into finals.

Minyip Murtoa - looks like the team to really improve in season 2014 , gone out on a massive recruiting drive and been quite successful by the looks of things, a few of the senior boys identified that they could only match the top sides for 3 quarters and that they needed a huge pre season to rectify this, expect to se a much fitter burra outfit in 2014,

Nhill - have heard next to nothing form the mob at the long end of the western highway , will be interesting to see how they go this season , they always seem to be lacking quality 1 or 2 quality midfielder's.

Ararat - blessed with a lot of quality young kids who are lighting fast and just ooze talent, but they have lacked key position players these last few years , if they happen to sign 2-3 high quality key position players I think Ararat will test the stronger sides , if they fail to recruit some key post players I think there game plan doesn't stand up against the better sides.

Stawell - expecting the warriors to really bounce back hard after last year , last year was a complete flop according to some of players , there a proud club the warriors and I wouldn't expect them to have another season like there last , a bit like Ararat they have a heap of young talent but just lack a couple of key position players. I know they have gone out hard on a recruiting drive and picked up a couple of really handy footballers from Melbourne, Cassidy has been away from the game for a few years now and I expect the boys to really get behind him and look to build towards finals.

united - does anyone know what the hell is happening with them in season 2014 !?

would be interested to know some ins/ outs from any sides if anyone is willing to share ?

Good write up, I am suprised warrack didnt have a massive crack at local boy Ryan Mckenzie, who knows they may have but I didnt hear anything.

Horsham United - Natimuk merger talks confirmed by Mail Times online. approved in-principle by both boards, and both presidents are encouraging members of both clubs to vote for the merger. Club would be known as Natimuk United, be mainly based at Nati, and play in HDFL. WFL draw will need to be re-jigged, but obviously the district draw will remain the same except for the addition of an ANZAC Day game. (Does this mean WFL loses the ANZAC day game?)

Not sure this adds much to Natimuk apart from some extra numbers on the track, saving some sore old guys from pulling on the boots in future.

Big blow to WFL major-league status in my opinion, though it does solve the on-going problem of having a perennial struggling club leading to lopsided results, and some will be happy the bye is eliminated.

Go to one league....do it now. Let the strong survive and the weak fall or merge. You can work out the problems with draws and stuff later. One league admin, one set of umpires....do it now.

Yep, one league with two divisions has been an idea for years now, and there is a lot to like about it. Isn't there supposed to be a review of football in the region soon? Time to debate it seriously, work out the advantages and disadvantages.

Letting the strong survive and weak fall is a very senseless idea for football in the area and the broader community. If that is the mindset then we may aswell shut the footy down.
How about everyone bands together to keep the great sport going so the up and coming kids of today have something to strive for as our parents & grandparents etc have and we keep the kids out of the house and active.

So what's the example of how that would be any different to how things have operated for the last 40 years? Quany/Norag, Warrack/Brim, Minyip/Murtoa, Marnoo folded, Homers folded, Gerang Kiata folded etc etc. Nobody stepped in to prop them up....and how would you? The population dwindles and it gets harder to run footy clubs...pretty simple.

Footy in the region might evolve into a single league with one division in the distant future, but a combined league right now would have to be a two-division model because there are too many clubs in both leagues currently. To have one division right now, you would have to force a significant number of clubs to merge or fold, and that is simply too much change too quickly and would create a massive backlash from grass-roots supporters.

I'd love to see 2 divisions. The bottom sides of div 1 get relegated to div 2 at the end of the season. And the top of div 2 go up to div 1.
