Since Danny Roach got drafted at pick seven have we changed recruiting managers? Whoever it was at the time stuffed up big as they traded away effectively Pavlich or Haselby to get Steve McKee.
Who is current recruiting manager and who was it then?

I think Noel Judkins is the current recruiting manager. Not sure who it was back then, but I can imagine they would've been kicked to the kerb for their efforts in costing us Pavlich, mind you the coach would obviously have had a say in that. That being the draft at the end of 1999 would mean that Malthouse would've just been placed in charge wouldn't it? Correct me if I am wrong of course. Can't believe we gave up Pavlich for the Cardboard Ruckman. If it makes us feel any better though, at least Richmond took that hack Fiora ahead of Pavlich, at least we got a decent player in Fraser. Would still have loved to see the Big Pav running around in black and white.

Noel Judkins is credited as being one of the best recruiting managers around, he did wonders with Essendon during the 1990's apparently. I think he is better at finding new talented kids than recruiting big names players though. Or I should say I hope so seeings we didn't get anyone in the trading period.

Hope that was a bit of a help for you richie_cole#13

...Repo Man...

Judkins is very good.

Out of all the recruiting managers, he (I’m pretty sure) has the most wide-spread network of scouts around Australia out of any team.

Although he isn't necessarily the best, he still is still up there with the best recruiting managers.

Sorry to Hi-jack the pies board but Judkins (was @ essendon first) will get you some very good talent but he'll also bring some very bad Hacks. Dodoro's better;)

He is one of the best recruiting managers but he will make mistakes and bring many a Hack

Judkins has recruited reasonably well with later picks but also made some costly mistakes. Giving up 3 then picking Roach is unforgiveable and has probably cost us a flag. He also paid too high a price for Shaw (18), when we could have had Kerr and two other father/son picks Davis and Oborne didn't work out with Oborne getting delisted. He cost us 35 and we could have had Danny Jacobs who went next pick.

Instead of 20/20 hindsight how about using some 20/20 vision?

If you are such an expert why dont you tell us whether Brayden or Heath Shaw will be good pick-ups, or who we should take with pick 17.

Perhaps then you will realise its all to easy to be an expert after the fact. The Roach/Pavlich issue is the only one that was probably an obvious error from day 1. Even then, McKee was only nine points away from being a Premiership ruckman.

Well some people even ranked Pavlich higher than Josh on draft day so it was a pretty daft selection. I think that Brayden is a steal with a third round but Heath is more, perhaps just worth a second-rounded, a bit of a risk but worth taking bearing in mind that it is not a strong draft. Though I question the wisdom of having so many father/sons, three Clokes and Shaws, especially as it can become a bit inbred and the Ray Shaw finals era reminds me of failure. Davis was always only going to be a very short term prospect due to homesickness so we could have overlooked him. I don't think it is only hindsight I and some others are using. There have been ordinary picks we would not have ventured into. And besides Judkins is paid big money not to make stuff-ups which have drastic effects. Blind Freddie could see that Pavlich or Hasleby were better than anything coming after them. And then to go and pick Roach who had performed terribly in under 18s that year.........................

I'ver never heard so much crap in all my life. How in hell do you know he was always going to be homesick? He didn't even know it himself!!!!!

Maybe Alan Didak will get homesick - we should sack him immediately!!!!

I agree hotpie. We should delist immediately every interstate recruit in case they get homesick!!!

I am amazed at the amount of wisdom after the event. I suggest everyone who is sticking the knife into Noel Judkins should study the players available for this years draft and identify those who are definitely going to be superstars and those who will be duds. Send the list to Noel and post it on here. We might be able to do away with Noel's position and save some money.

No, it was common knowledge that Davo was only a short term prospect, if you knew anything about his background which Judkins didn't properly research. He even ran away back to Sydney after a couple of weeks here initially. They could have overlooked him but certainly should have traded him after 2000. Couldn't see the point of keeping him. At least then we might have got something for him and would have avoided all the aggro and hatred that now surrounds him and the Pies.
