So Richo just said Luke Lowden to port is basically a certainty
Don't see why Lowden would come here to be honest. Is being behind Lobbe, Ryder and Redden better than being behind McEvoy, Ceglar and Hale? Especially when Hale probably only has a year left, if that. But if he does want to come here, I'm definitely not complaining.

If we land Lowden and Ryder we are pretty much sorted. Gives us three solid rucks with Redden allowed to get his body right. All three are different in their game style and we have Trengrove and Westhoff as back up. Shaw even had a crack for the Maggies. Nice big tick!
All sorted in the ruck but there have been a few whispers of another 'big' target hinted by a few people in the know, depending on how we go about getting Ryder I'd love to get a KPF like Day here as a somewhat realistic option i.e more realistic than Cameron.

Ryder, Lowden & Day would go down as our best trade period ever both in quality & filling obvious list needs.

Lobbe and Redden have a history of injuries. Ryder - who knows what will happen with ASADA and will play more as a forward/ruck. Realistically if Lobbe misses Lowden is straight in. Whereas at the Hawks Grimley may push past him and he isn't better than McEvoy and Hale.

So if we lock done Ryder and Lowden, what is the next focus for the trade period?

Defence: A developing back wouldn't be a bad option here - we only have Clurey as back up. Maybe Stevenson and Stewart (both too short).
Midfield: We can't get games into Newton/Young/Moore/Mitchell as it is. A young developing player may be worth it. Wouldn't mind us taking a risk on a player here.
Forward: Realistically we have Shaw and Harvey. Butcher remains an unknown quantity. If we land Ryder and Lowden we could avoid to draft a young KPF and develop him as there is less of a need for a ready made player.

Ryder, Day and Gorringe would work too!

Schulz doesn't have many years left. Lowden can play forward. One injury to Lobbe, Ryder or Schulz and you'd think that Lowden would be the first man up. Much easier to get a game here than it would be at Hawthorn where he is at least 2 players down before getting a game.

yep would likely be lowden and redden rucking for the maggies next year.

does our set up in the sanfl change next year in regards to top up players?

we really need some tall defenders to play next to clurey so he isnt the lone backman again. whether that is a top up player or we go to the draft.

we have some good depth in trengove, carlile , hombsch and clurey with paddy being able to go back at a stretch but if we can find a project tall defender with a rookie or late pick in the next 2 drafts that would be good.

thats probably why i would suggest it's for a bit of job security in the contract. for at least next year he will be ahead of Redden and if Redden doesn't come up he will be our long term first ruck replacement. he can replace Ryder and Lobbe playing role so i can see why he would come. IMO would play a few games next year especially if Ryder accepts a deal.

It's great to hear that we've got another signing in the pipeline but I just don't see how we can get it done without trading a first 22 player which I don't want the club to do unless it's a mutual agreement.

I daresay based on the indication Ken gave on Reddens body that Lowden would be well ahead of him in the short-medium term whilst we take the very careful approach with getting Red back to full fitness.

The Lowden to Port rumours have been around a while, I'm glad we'll be able to effectively square up for them stitching us up with the Renouf trade by bringing in Lowden cheaply.

I guess it depends on how the Ryder trade goes, if we play hardball & get him for 16 on it's own I could see us trading 1-2 players looking for more opportunity & working ourselves another decent pick to put a package deal together for a KPF.

Won't happen but it'd be ideal in a Franklin/Tippet way if Essendon/Doddoro tried to stuff us over & Paddy managed to walk to us for nix leaving our first pick to trade in a player like Day, can't see us going down that route though but do see us holding firm on 16.

If we did happen to get a Day/Cameron/etc type (lets forget the difficulties of actually getting one of these players), they would be straight up 1st 22. Ryder would be first 22 as well and would be playing that third tall role that Day/Cameron would also be playing. We wouldn't play that many talls and would have to sacrifice midfield depth and pace. Whilst it would be a nice quandry to have, I am not sure where all these talls would fit in.

We could maybe hide one of em behind Bobby?

Any reason a bunch of my friends on FB are worried Port may get Stanton as well? - Haven't seen anything about him...
He's in Adelaide at the moment. Mate is a bartender and met him in the city last night, said he's here for a bucks night. Doubt there's anything more to it than that.

On 5aa that would be reported as he's accepted the Crow's offer worth more bucks and will be signing the contract tonight.

Going to say the same thing about Richo as I said about David King (that Port were into Tex).

How the hell would he know?

Edit: Would love to get Lowden though. Insurance backup if ASADA hits. Also could move Butcher to defense or to another club since they're both at the same stage of their careers.
