As I've posted earlier, if we are going to trade Butcher (and I doubt we will unless the player himself wants out), I'd rather us look at manufacturing a like-for-like trade with another club. The Bulldogs and Liam Jones come to mind, but there would be a couple of the other clubs around with young key forwards who have shown a bit but haven't quite clicked in their current environments.
I'm hopeful we would be able to create a Jay Schulz like result with another club's "failure".

Rumours going around that we will be trading Butcher to St Kilda for Milera.

Absolutely horrible.
St Kilda want to delist him and can't because he has another year on his contract A Tim Tam will seal the deal let alone giving up Butcher. Unless he was going to replace a player, we do not need Milera.

Milera as a rookie would be ok
Krakouer as a rookie would be better because at least he'd have a chance of getting a game in our best 22.

Trading Butcher for a soon to be delistee would be charity for St Kilda, maybe we can work Stevenson for Rhys Stanley because that'd be the equivalent of that crazy trade rumour.

If everything goes the way I think, our off season could end up like this.

IN:
Ryder (Pick 16 + Stevenson or Butcher)
Pick 34 - Development KPD
Lowden (Pick 50 via Geelong)
Pick 52 - Johansen (Small forward to be turned into Outside Mid later in career)
Pick 70 - Mitchell upgraded off rookie list
Rookie Pick 1 - Baulderstone
Rookie Pick 2 - Krakouer
International Rookie - Wagner

OUT:
Newton (To Geelong for Pick 50)
Pick 16 + Stevenson or Butcher (For Ryder)
Pick 50 (Via Geelong for Lowden)
Heath
Hitchcock
Renouf
Johannesen's form was fantastic in the under 18 tournament, I think he'll go before pick 52

Butcher for Milera? The only way this would work is the following:

Port Adelaide:

Lose: Butcher, Pick 16, Pick 35
Gain: Ryder, Milera, Pick 49

St. Kilda:

Lose: Milera, Pick 21
Gain: Butcher, Pick 35

Essendon:

Lose: Ryder, Pick 49
Gain: Pick 16, Pick 21

So for Port, it would be paying Butcher + 16 for Ryder and Milera, with a swap of third round draft picks to even it up.

St.Kilda gets Butcher for Milera and a downgrade of their second round pick.

Essendon gets two draft picks close enough to being first rounders for Ryder and a loss of their third round pick.

His size has made him a potential late pick.

I like everything apart from gaining Milera, Might as well have kept Hitchcock for another year.

lol that would be horrible for us

our first pick in the draft starting at 49 , we delist hitchcock just to put milera on the main list??

if we wanted pick 49 , we could just trade butch for a pick like that. so why would we be giving up picks round 1 and 2 for ryder?

I thought Milera was a promising kid with room for improvement - just checked and was surprised to learn he will be 27 by the start of next season. It's a no from me.

Given our lack of KPF depth, if we are letting Butcher go, it has to be with a view to replacing him with a key forward.
Milera is superfluous to our needs.
Amon, Sam Gray and AhChee are better long term prospects IMO, and that's not to mention Neade, Wingard and Monfries.

We will get Lowden as a forward ruck. I'm hoping it will be with the pick we trade out Newton for. (About 50)

Don't mind this idea and it makes a lot of sense to me. Who are the KPF at other clubs you had in mind?

I am sorry but dislike the Newton for pick 50 deal immensely
Don't be sorry, it's a horrible suggestion.

Newton was talked up as a possible top 10 pick before getting a bad injury in his draft year. We picked him up with a second round pick, worked hard to get his body right where he was picked for some AFL footy this season, came second in Magpie's BnF count and then give him away for pick 50?

I'd rather keep him and see if he can break through next year.

It's as bad as trading out Butch for Milera.

Jones from Bulldogs is the main one.
TBH, I would also consider Stanley from St Kilda, although I suspect Alan Richardson would be especially wary about the injury baggage that comes with Butcher.
One of the GWS kids would be fantastic, but would cost too much given that we have our eggs in the Ryder basket.

We're not getting a second rounder for Newton. Players who tear up the state comp but haven't shown anything at AFL level don't carry trade currency that reflects their potential. It is the downside of not getting games into them when they deserve it. His original draft projections are meaningless.

Comparable trades are the ones we arranged for Campbell Heath and Lewis Stevenson, both for picks in the 80s. Newton would garner slightly better, but certainly not in the 20s or 30s. We got Brad Ebert for pick 28 FFS.
