We're not getting a second rounder for Newton. Players who tear up the state comp but haven't shown anything at AFL level don't carry trade currency that reflects their potential. It is the downside of not getting games into them when they deserve it. His original draft projections are meaningless.

Comparable trades are the ones we arranged for Campbell Heath and Lewis Stevenson, both for picks in the 80s. Newton would garner slightly better, but certainly not in the 20s or 30s. We got Brad Ebert for pick 28 FFS.
I think 45-50 for Newton is probably correct weight. Don't forget we got Robbie Gray for 55 :)

The Ebert trade was a bit different in that we could play the PSD card, but you're right, Newton probably won't get much draft pick value, more likely as a pick upgrade or another fringe player that is better suited to what we need.

Port could trade a better profiled player out and keep Newton on the dice roll that they think he will improve enough to take a spot next year.

I wouldn't even be entertaining a trade for Newton, and i'd be telling him he's a required player.

Unless he asks to be traded. Then I guess we just take what we can get. He might end up being our Josh Kennedy to Sydney trade, but as good as Kennedy became, it didn't stop the Hawks winning another couple of flags.

This thread's a bit boring now. Fast forward a month and Ryder will be at Port for Pick 16, give or take steak knives. No need for any gnashing and thrashing from anyone here.

I'm more interested in the second of the big fish we've reportedly got hooked... *off to the recruiting targets thread*
which is who?

Ken has told him he wants him to stay.... Now what is an offer that we can put to him and bear in mind one more year on the outer he's looking for a job in the real world.... If we think he's worth keeping we match offers from other clubs and I've no doubt he stays but if we don't give that kind of commitment to him.... Talk is cheap.

Yeah look, we're going to lose a few we'd prefer to keep. Newton will be the first of several. We can already see how hard our delisting is going to be over the next few seasons. If we delist everyone we want to this season, who goes next season? We have to make 3 list changes.

We'll lose other players who want more opportunity but can't get it here because we're a fantastic football team. It's unavoidable. Look at the quality Hawthorn has lost since 2008 in McGlynn and Kennedy.

We just have to make sure that we're making the most of our trades in and we'll be better, even if we do have to reluctantly trade away a player who might make it.

We have to face facts about Ryder, we want him coz he is so damn good, therefore we must spend to get him.

I know this wont be popular, but I reckon this could get our man

Pick 16 + John Butcher + Tom Clurey for Ryder + 3rd round pick + 4th round pick

Lowden should be available for our 3rd round pick

This is the key bit. It's a mark of success if we have the players we want in the 22 and we have players unable to crack it wanting opportunities elsewhere. Rhode and replacements, if they are doing a good job, should be able to leverage that we have the third youngest list, so players wanting out aren't struggling hacks who can't crack a mediocre side.

I would drive Butcher over and bring Jones back myself.
I will pay for the petrol.
I like the possibility of Liam Jones because unlike Day, Gorringe an a few others he may be gettable.
Securing Ryder, Jones and Lowden would do nicely imo.

You're right, this won't be popular at all.
Clurey is going to be a very decent footballer. Be patient with him. We can't afford to give away big guys when our depth in that area is so tenuous.

We would be crazy to trade Clurey ... it will be Tom Harley all over again. I know he has played only 1 game but once he has a couple of seasons with us he will be very good we just need to get games into him. we wouldn't trade Shaw or Harvey (because we need to get games into them as well)
