One day Stephen Wells and those around him might write a book or make a documentary about recruitment strategies at Geelong in the last 25 years. We have seen recruiters leave to other clubs (Woodland, Selwood) yet the same success not replicated at their new clubs. It is an inexact Science that no one outside the four walls seems to know the formula to, but it continues to work.
It’s not to say that we have nailed every pick. For a time there we couldn’t get a lot of first-round picks right. However it is the clear reason that we have stayed competitive for so long.
Which is why I found it interesting to read this week that we were the only side to bid on Ty Gallop. Add to that previously that we have bid on Marcus Windhager and Errol Gulden, two who would have been fantastic pickups.
Given two of these were playing juniors in NSW and QLD, our recruitment network seems to extend far and wide. Add to that our continued recruitment out of the SANFL and plucking a couple from obscurity out of the WAFL that will be playing this weekend. We clearly have invested heavily in recruiting. Something I am sure other clubs are doing too, but without the diversity in success.
Anyway if that book or documentary ever gets released. I will be first in line.
