With the upcoming compromised drafts clubs have been much more ruthless in their list managment than in past seasons. This has resulted in many experienced and even promising kids being cut loose by clubs that in previous years would have been retained on their list. This provides a unique opportunity perhaps to snare some quality experienced players to fill holes on our list considering this is believed to be a weak draft.

Who should we be looking at?? And what should we be willing to pay??

Luke Ball - Goes without saying. Would seriously help out our inside midfield group. Both parties still seem to be very keen to get the move that fell through done. Would pay pick 30 without hesitation.

Andrew Welsh - Another interesting option. Less likely to land him as he hasn't officially walked out yet. I think in many ways would be an even better needs fit for us than Ball as he is an elite tagger in addition to being a decent clearance midfielder. Would pay pick 30 without hesitation.

Joel McDonald - Many will say we don't need this type of player but I think you can never have enough quality. He and Shaw would make a formidable duo of rebounding defenders. Would give us experience too. Would give us the flexibility to develop Blight into an outside mid or winger which would address another need on our list. Would pay pick 64 for him.

Scott Harding - Promising outside mid who was a victim of Brisbanes bold approach to this years trade week. Approaching the 50 game mark and has shown a fair bit when given the opportunity in midfield. Was often played out of position as a small forward which he isn't as well suited too. Would add a player with serious pace to our midfield group which we lack a bit of. Would pick him up in the rookie draft.

Mitch Thorp - An extremely promising KPF, with consistent injury issues and serious attitude problems. Still the best KPP available for free and could prove the bargain of the draft if a team can turn him around. Well worth the punt to help sure up our KP stocks but i'd say too big a risk for our first rounder in the ND. Pick anywhere from 64+.

Other available players:

Robert Shirley, Rhan Hooper, Daniel Gilmore, Kane Tenace, Russell Robertson, Simon Buckley, Shane Valenti, Daniel Harris, Jesse Smith, Nathan Brown, Mark Coughlan, Matt Maguire, Jamie McNamara

>>> Among many other players that have been delisted.

What are your thoughts?? Should we stick to the draft?? Or chase some experienced players?? Who should we look at??

PLEASE DO NOT MERGE THIS WITH OTHER THREADS!!!

IT'S SO FRUSTRATING WHEN SOMEONE STARTS A THREAD WITH NEW IDEAS OR KNOWLEDGE AND IT GETS LUMPED WITH SOME 500-PAGE THREAD ELSEWHERE.

THREADS SHOULD ONLY BE MERGED IF THEY CONTAIN THE SAME ORIGINAL POST.

THANKYOU!!!!!!!

Hehehehehe...I feel better now.

I would go Ball for sure, then Welsh.
The rest are worth late picks at best.
To be honest I would be prepared to pick up no kids this draft and just go for senior guys.
Maybe go the kids in the Rookie Draft.

I think you mean Andrew Welsh. Scott Welsh is from the Dogs and if you were willing to take him with pick 30 there is a fair chance you are not all there.

But yes, gladly take both Ball and Welsh with pick 30.

Cheers for that, just fixed it up.

Where is Tobias thoolen?!?!?

I believe at pick 30 we are shooting for ball or welsh, pert was on radio this morning saying we are still interested and a good chance for ball. Apart from thorp the others don't interest me assorted spuds and alright players with severe issues

A bit harsh on MacDonald there I think. Genuinely good player, but in a position we just don't need.

Poor man's Heath Shaw basically, but still a player who'd be good on any list.

Wheres Thoolen?? At Highpoint I hear!!

I wouldn't call Joel McDonald a spud. Very good HBF and would make a good combo with Shaw. I think it is also attractive to be able to develop Blight as an outside mid. Just in the VFL the way he moves somtimes I think he'd be best suited to the midfield and delivering the ball into the 50. Thats even more important given we don't have too many outside mid options on our list.

The other thing to note is that with so many more decent experienced players available this year it makes it easier to perhaps snare a Ball or a Welsh or a McDonald or whoever. If Welsh and Ball were in the draft it just makes it alot more likely one or the other will fall to us at 30. Good position to be in. I hope Welsh and McPhee walk. That'd make things very interesting.

Ball - If he is there at 30, we should pick him up.
Welsh - If he is there at 30 and Ball is not, we should pick him up.
Thorp - If he is there at our last pick, we should have a go. Not with pick 62, though.
MacDonald - If Thorp is gone at our last pick, I would pick up MacDonald. Small attacking defenders are actually an area that we are light on (with Clarke going), so I wouldn't mind getting him with our last.

I wouldn't pick up any other recycled player.

Pick 30: Ball or Welsh whichever is available (if both avail then Ball)

Pick 62: I really think we need to pick up Myles Sewell if he is still there but if not id like this pick for Serhat Temel if available if not then i rate Robert Shirley and is worthy of pick 62 i also rate Kane Tenace (i know most of you do not, but i have seen a bit of him over the passed 2-3 years) as a ball magnet could be worth a punt. (also think Shane Valenti would be a great pick up, showed promise i thought at the dees.

Pick 78: Maybe Daniel Harris here could be a good pickup. At 78 its a junk pick so no huge loss if he doesnt do much, but i would have thought any help in the midfield we can get would be greatly appreciated.

Agree on most.
Tenace?
He is rubbish, absolute and utter rubbish, a hack of the highest order.

If we manage to pick up Welsh or Ball at 30 it will be interesting to see what the club does in regards to our KP's. Temel is probably a good punt - although Snoop has a good point about him perhaps bullying smaller opponents at TAC level, something he wont have teh luxury of at AFL or even VFL level. I see similarities to Dawes situation now. I wonder if someone like Hartigan will be around at 62 and worth it??

Also Harris can likely be picked up in the rookie draft. Don't see the point in wasting even our third pick when we can get him cheaper. Would prefer we look at Claye Beams or another draftee with that pick. Think he'd be worth a shot in the rookie though.

I might start a thread, "if jesus is available at 30, should we pick him up?"...

of course they would take ball and welsh at 30... but we havent even heard that both of them are going to leave their clubs yet!

Isn't he slotting in the goals regularly for Nagoya Grampus?? ;)

Get Thorp.

So he has had a couple of injuries. He's young. So he's a ********. He's young.

One thing for sure is that he's cheap, and could answer our prayers. And then we could all laugh at Hawthorn.

Am I correct when I believe he said to Tom Harley that he was going to end his career.

yes in his vfl match, harley matched him up and he promised to end his career

My mate who worked with him at the Hawks reckons he has never been nurtured properly, and the Hawks didn't manage his arrogance properly.

He also thinks his injuries are a mental problem at times.

If we can get him to mature and channel his arrogance properly, he could be a good player.

IMO arrogance is a good attribute in a way, when it is used right. All the best players had some arrogance about them.

I cant believe there's no love for Jesse Smith, IF he can get his body right, he's the best player of the mature age blokes, by the length of Flemington straight. I understand we need a stopage mid, but if Smiths available, he's a jet.

We looked at a trade but his medical came back very average.

So did Johnson's I guess.

The top 3 youve mentioned on that list would be able to contribute something and add a bit of value to the team, not too sure bout the next 2 youve mentioned.
With our last pick, i wouldnt be upset if we picked up a player like Valenti or McNamara(if still available).

Thorp would be the best because off age. McGuire has lost to much speed to be much value.

Trying to get some info on Thorp from the Q dawg. Suspects Carlton and Richmond are keen but not sure.

Said he is tee'd up somewhere or he wouldn't let the dorks release him.

Can't believe I just said dorks.

Now I've said it twice. Bah.

I would definitly have a crack at Ball firstly and if he isnt available then welsh at pick 30.

with our 2nd pick id definitly have a crack at jesse Smith(injury prone but high rick high reward type pick, if he does get his body right could be the best player from the draft if not he is no worse than a Thoolen).

with our 3rd pick id have a crack at Thorp. if Mick and Bucks can get his head in the right spot could be the answer.

Didnt Thorp go on to kick 6 or something on Harley after telling him he was going to end his career???

that could mean we have added a ready made ruckman/2 good mids (ball or welsh and smith)/Key forward to our starting 22 who will impact in 2010 and beyond.

Jamie McNamara and Ashley Arrowsmith are 2 I'm interested in.

Arrowsmith got delisted from the West Coast rookie list. He is someone who can perform in big games (2007 TAC Cup Grand Final). I wouldn't have minded him as a late pick in that draft and I would give him atleast a spot on our rookie list.

Jamie McNamara is someone who got delisted from the West Coast senior list, the biggest concern with him is his disposal, but otherwise really like his game. Wouldn't mind using our pre season draft pick on him.

Also I think Danny Stanley would be very successful for Essendon and Johnny Bennell in West Coast. West Coast need a small forward and Essendon need a strong bodied inside mid, so both could work out well.
