We also live in society where everyone has a fridge and freezer and even in Perth the shops are open 7 days a week and until 9pm most nights, so it's not like most people need to bulk buy all their food a week or two at a time. I just buy what I need as I go in terms of perishables.

I shop at the stupermarket about 3 or 4 times a year

I throw away about a footballs worth of plastic a week if you squashed it it would be about a soft ball.
Recycle is mainly wine bottles and a few bits of paper a few plastic bottles.
Half a bin a fortnight at most

Most jars get reused to store stuff and make pickles in.
I dont eat fast food or takeaway or pre-packaged food.
I have glass and stainless steel storage containers for leftovers and defrosting stuff and marinating stuff in

Just building a new strawberry bed it has about 200 egg cartons in it that will get covered by dirt to break down.
I even wash and dry veg bags to use a few times ,they only get thrown out when I freeze meat in them.

Yeah it's really not that hard.

For all the talk of a sugar tax I'd rather see a packaging tax. You get 10c for an empty bottle or can at a recycling depot, make it 50c or $1 or something and if people want to throw away their empties then kids and the homeless can prosper.

Live in a block of flats. Most weeks I'm the only resident to put out both rubbish and recycling bins. I guess they think "It's not full" but * that. Who wants food rotting in their bin for over a week?:sick:

In terms of packaging- I moved recently, and just to a one bedroom apartment- minus all the bedroom furniture, I took that with me.

Fmd the amount of packaging I've had to go thru and throw out. Its worse than the ******* move itself.

Over a year ago someone moved in, filled their recycling bin with boxes and decided putting the rest in my bin was a good idea. No campaigner. Took them out and crammed them in their's. Was like 5 days until the next bin collection.

Once on bin night mine was full (they're usually full, council gives smaller bins than most) so I walked down the street until there was one with space. Next morning noticed some *er had plopped a microwave on top of mine

It would be good if Australia had a better recycling system. A lot of the stuff that goes in the recycle bin still goes to landfill. Packaging needs to be reduced by a long way also. Some of it is ridiculous.

Reminds me of an experience I had back in 92.
I was on a Pelni ship travelling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin.
Ship was full of boy scouts and girl guides going to Banjarmasin for a Jamboree.
Being the only whitey on board, they all wanted to chat with me and practice their English.
I noticed that all of them would just toss their rubbish overboard, so I painstakingly repeatedly explained the damage that littering was doing to the environment and that all rubbish should be placed in the bins and not tossed overboard.
I was elated that they all took this on board and soon the bins were all full of waste.
Elated till a deckie came along, pulled the bin liner from the bin and hoisted the whole thing overboard.

What are your recycling habits like?

I’ll be one to put my hand up and say I’m pretty bad, I go through a 50 pack of sandwich bags a week while meal prepping my lunch and dinners, and probably a roll or two of paper towel. I do try my best to seperate recyclables and general waste when cooking and the like, however I’m also not going to take a bin out if the other one isn’t full yet. :$ Also notorious for still buying Woolies and Coles ‘non plastic’ plastic bags rather than bringing one of my own non plastic bags.

Over to you BigFooty!

The Chinese rejected Aus recycling, its rubbish is what they said & guess what ? Its rubbish

Because you think something is recyclable means squat & you MUST only recycle what the sorting facility can sort & IF you havent checked this out YOU are part of the problem. Looney Tunes throw nappies in (yeh, fair dinkum), old shoes, new shoes, electrical stuff, clothes, anything in a plastic bag (yeh Myrtle thats you) goes to landfill.
There's more, if in doubt put it in the gsrbage bin, at home at work.

All the nonsense we've been fed about high recycling participation are just a waste of time.

Apparently wine bottles are not recycled in most places

Recycling is for jerks and lesbians.
So edgy

Well...
One way would be to buy a half pound of weed, chuck an oz in the bowl then sell the other seven.
Every day!
I mean I like the way you think but that sounds like a lot of work. Much better foe the environment just to keep it all

You dont get money for it at the container place but our council takes it,not much profit in recycling glass it costs more than making it from new material,I think it gets used in road construction ??

After you've been overseas, to places like Thailand you realise that recycling is pointless after you see people just throwing litter into the ocean everywhere.

Most recycling ends up at transfer stations which then end up at landfill. Since China pulled out of buying out plastic we just don't have the facilities to deal with it anymore. Bit sad its just being thrown into massive landfils.

Technology and price may mean it will be mined in the future.

I remember in Germany 30 years ago outside in the supermarket car parks there was containers to recycle things in.
There was a hole for brown glass, clear glass, green glass, tin aluminium, plastics and paper.
People just parked there, did their recycling, then went shopping.
It would be taken away and recycled easily

There was even a point with a dip stick vacuum so you could suck out your oil and it would get recycled and you would buy new oil from the shop
