Redden

After Abletts performance on the weekend I'm not sure that is the best example:p
Focusing on only tackling the ability to rap up Gary Ablett is pretty awsome, have you read the article on how most teams don't bother trying to tackle him because he is so dam hard to tackle. All i was pointing out was the fact his tackling is one of the best in the league

He has fantastic pressure and a great tackle no doubt :)

Haha, was going to say Hammo Hammo is that you.

Reddo has said this year he has been working on his disposal. If that improves markedly I think he'll stand out more. He doesn't stand out like a Rich with his booming cannon. But he does the tough and dirty background work to load the shell.

Jackie Redden is the Joel Patfull of the midfield. What he does might not look important to a lot of people, but it's a valuable service which allows other players the room to do their best. It's not a glamorous job, but it's a critical one and someone has to step up and do it. You usually won't win a lot of awards for it, and the fans won't flock all over you like they do your team mates, but I think guys like Jack enjoy the relative peace compared to what Rockliff and Rich get.

In our best 5-6 players and one of the very few who has consistent effort. Best 22 at any club.

I have to concede Reddo may not be the superstar I was hoping he could develop into but the club would do very well to have more like him.

Different type of player in that he's not as flashy with the ball, but arguably the best at the club without it. A good balance is important, and his type are every bit as important as the guys that stand out more with the ball. Is, and will continue to be best 22 as long as he's fit.

I think Redden is actually the type of player we need a couple more of - not too flashy but doing hard slog all game that allows the flashier guys to do their thing.

His value comes from pressure and persistence. He is actually quite consistent over the course of a game rather than fading in and out like others can do.

I imagine that Redden is one of those players that the coach barely had to give specific instructions to each game, knowing he will do exactly what is needed of him.

I think it is also easy to miss the value players like Redden have yet I reckon that the best teams all have a couple at least. When people like to say their club's best player would make the best 22 of any other team it is guys like Redden that they imagine could be replaced but I suspect the coach would feel very differently. Too much flash and not enough hard slog = down hill skiers. Or worse, Carlton.

I understand where sherrinator is coming from in regards to Redden. After seeing the development in his earlier years the trajectory was exciting but this seems to have platued. I perceive that it is not his output that has been dissapointing but our desire for him to be an A grade player which has been let down. In context of the league he is not A grade but what he brings to our side and what he does is A grade. This says more about where our team is at. We get so hung up on grading players and whether they are A, B or C grade players and also stats. He plays his role and is one of the better defensive mids in the league. He is not flashy and might be deemed as a bit vanilla.

It has been a few years now since I played footy but I loved playing with those blokes who put their body on the line game in game out to do whatever they had to do for the team to win. I would believe that he would be looked at in the same light within the inner sanctum.

I think it will be a long time before Redden is no longer in our side if ever. Just one of those guys who does the job and is an important part of the team. Most good teams have guys like this who just get on with all the little jobs you don't see on tv especially. I think he's got a bit to work on and there's certainly improvement there but it will be a long time before he's worse than 8th in line for a midfield spot. Not flashy but always works hard and does most things reasonably well. He's the guy that lets players like mayes and aish do the brilliant stuff.

If Redden doesn't improve any further, then he's still worth a place in the midfield.

I guess my disappointment with him is that I saw him as capable of being something much better. Other than his kicking, the best attributes of his game are elite. He shows he can win multiple clearances. He shows he can run to create space outside. He has great hands. His tackling is league best. But, other than the tackling, he doesn't put in enough complete performances. He'll give us the full package sometimes but not as often as we should expect from a 6th year midfielder. I'm starting to question whether he's got a huge amount of improvement left in him.

But that doesn't mean that he would drop out of our best 22 or out of the midfield rotations. He's good enough now. But there's another level that he could go to that would elevate him as a footballer. Just not sure that will happen now.

It may just be me confirming to my bias, but he does seem to play better when 1 or 2 of our preferred starting mids are out of the side.

That's BrownDog's fav cognitive bias.

He loves it.

Nah...

Is he a potential-tagger? I wouldn't mind seeing him going to the elite mids, and then being able to still collect his 20-25 touches? He is the best defensive mid at our club, I really feel he could be the best tagger in the league, whilst still getting a decent amount of the ball.

Can also play as a defensive half-forward against your 'Quarter-Backs'.

I have thought this myself actually. The best taggers play the shut down role as well as being able to hurt them the other way. A Ling type tagger than a Crowley though.

Rockliff and Rich aren't Brownlow medalists. They are B+ graders who occasionally play an A grade game.
Not yet, but Rocky has shown he isn't far away. In any event, some past Brownlow winners haven't been elite either so there are probably better measures to use.
