if the draft was redone and teams could take the players they need who would they take

1. Saints - Goddard - would not change as he has become a gun and all aus in 2009

2. Roos - McIntosh - will take this top ruckman with the next pick

3. Brisbane - Mackie - very good rebound from defence for the Lions

4. Bulldogs - Wells - good for their style and would be a great combo with cooney

5. Sydney - McVeigh - would stay with the same as mcveigh has become a very good midfielder

6. Port Adelaide - Selwood - selwood is the second best selwood and is a very good reliable player that port could use

7. Geelong - Brennan - cats would love his forward skills in their team now

8. Hawthorn - Merrett - perfect for the hawks get a good full back they need

9. Roos - Simpson - good skilled running player for the roos midfield

10. Essendon - Salopek - ok inside midfield for the dons who need help for jobe

11. Essendon - Winderlich - keep this ok midfielder for their midfield

12. Richmond - Richmond - Minson - need to get ruckman soon so take minson who is not too bad

13. Fremantle - Rivers - need defnders so take a risk on injury hit rivers

14. Melbourne - Gilham - good defender and best player left

15. Melbourne - Malceski - not a very good player but good skills and melb need that

16. Port Adelaide - johnson - give port another uck back up

I would have thought Brisbane would stick with Brennan, especially in preference to Mackie. He isn't as consistent but has far more x-factor, and the Lions are already pretty well served for good quality half-back flankers. It is possible they might opt for a purer midfield type, like Salopek or McVeigh but I reckon it is pretty hard to separate what all three (ie including Brennan) are likely to produce over the next five or so years.

Wasn't Merrett a zone pick for the Lions? Meaning he wasn't available for anyone else to pick. (I stand to be corrected by Lions fans if my memory is faulty on this one.)

If Malceski isn't a very good player, why is he in your top 16? (FWIW Malceksi looks set to remind people this year that he is in fact a very good player indeed, but I can understand why there are question marks over him after 2009 and the injury interrupted 2008.)

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

We actually did really well in this draft by selecting Wells and Mcintosh with our first two picks.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

We didn't do too well with our first two picks with Paul Johnson and Brent Staker, but picked up a gem in Adam Selwood at 53. Staker did play over 100 games but never really progressed beyond a promising player.

Although we traded Johnson for Pick 29 (Matt Rosa) and Staker this year so we didn't end up too bad.

I'm guessing the OP left out Father Son picks Jobe Watson and Brett Ebert?

I think Brendan Goddard is the standout player of that draft, think he will get even better this year as well.

IIRC the rookie draft that year had some very good pick ups as well.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

Very happy with Adam Selwood. Drafted a long way behind Troy but has developed into a better player.

Picked up Daniel Chick for pick #8 (Luke Brennan).

Staker we got a little out of and Johnson was as you say traded for Rosa's pick.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

Good re-order.

North did well here with McIntosh and Wells still having their best football in front of them.

Kris Shore didn't get too far from pick 18, but then there are only a handful of players after that pick still playing today.

Callum Urch and Blake Grima were both unlucky as both showed obvious AFL ability prior to succumbing to continual injury.

The rookies from this draft were outstanding.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

I actually though Urch was a pretty good prospect, Wally.

A shame he didn't make it in the end.

In saying that, I think the best North prospect I've ever seen that didn't make the successful transition to AFL level was Jeremy Clayton.

He was a gun.

Agree, if it wasn't for Laidley this bloke just might've made it. Very smart player with a nasty streak.

But then I thought Shane Valenti showed something for you blokes. What do I know?

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

All these players have had 7 years in the system and players dont improve much after this stage.

It is shaping up to be one of the poorer drafts.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

again, if you had your choice you'd trade out of a horrible draft

How do you predict a strong or weak draft.

2005 was predicted to be a weak draft but is shaping up to be a strong draft.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

Who were the big winners?

The Crows ended up with the servicable Shirley and had an outstanding rookie draft snagging Rutten and Bock.

Brisbane did well with Brennan, Selwood and Merrett.

Geelong picked up Mackie and Rooke.

North did okay with McIntosh and Wells.

Collingwood had a stinker.

They didn't draft Rutten and Bock in 2002. They elevated them, there's a difference.

Yep, I stand corrected.:thumbsu:

Brisbane had a good draft, Geelong and North were fair and there's not much after that.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

are you seriously saying people don't know?

Adelaide for example made a point of trading out of 2002, many clubs traded out of 2009.

its not random.

Made a point or wanted Wayne?

Revisionist.

10. Essendon - Salopek - ok inside midfield for the dons who need help for jobe

Why wouldn't we still just take Salopek?

Brennan for Mackie? Surely you jest. The only player in this draft I would consider swapping him for is Godard, and then I would have to think about it.

Merrett was drafted on merit.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

1. Goddard
2. McIntosh
3. McVeigh
4. Brennan
5. Mackie
6. Wells
7. Selwood
8. Winderlich
9. Merrett
10. Simpson
11. Salopek

Out of curiosity, where would Jobe Watson fit into here if he was not Father/ Son? I'd say around 4 - 7.

Re: redo the 2002 draft now that we have seen them

go check some facts. we also traded picks for torney.

That's right, you traded a first rund pick for Jason Torney didn't you?

Nice move.
