Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

So you are saying that right now, at Collingwood, you would take Tambling over Le Cras, Rosa and Monfries?

Right.

LeCras & Rosa definitely. Monfries is a lineball. Tambling is going to be a very good player - has shown glimpses of it and once he gets some consistency you'll eat your words. He's got a huge upside.

That may well be, but given my words, and this thread are directed at how they have gone so far, my words will stay uneaten. Thanks.:thumbsu:

Huge upside........euphemism for "hasn't done what we expected he would".......which may in a few years time become "very big disappointment".

He at least is finding the footy this year.......but, like Russell, burns the footy to much.

Russ has huge upside too.:p Doesn't mean it will ever be realised.

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

Lecras should be just outside the top 10.Hugely underrated on here,a very good footballer.

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

Lol.

Tambling may not be Buddy, but he's a hell of a lot better than most of the blokes being put ahead of him :thumbsu:

200 game very good player, potential to be a matchwinner.

Developing at the same speed as Shaun Burgoyne, Andrew McLoed and Gary Ablett Jnr.

Edit: I don't expect him to be a superstar, I just expect him to get a lot more respect in the coming years.

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

1. Lance Franklin
2. Jarryd Roughead
3. Brett Deledio
4. Ryan Griffen
5. Jordan Lewis

Yes I think it is pretty clear that this is the top 5. As a number of posters have indicated, these five guys are a cut above the rest.

Franklin first (obviously) and then you can throw a blanket over 2 to 5.

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

Could also argue he'd struggle to kick 50 without Franklin taking the opposition's 2 best defenders + everyone else preparing to leave their man when Buddy comes near.

Roughead kicked 5 against Richmond earlier in the year because his defender was more worried about helping out against Buddy.

Roughead has it very easy.

He gets 3rd rate defenders who focus on someone else, and he's playing for a team than wins 90% of the time.

Does it get any easier for a forward?

Try and think of another forward in the comp who has it easier than Roughead.

Try.

Okay - how about the forwards that actually get the ball kicked to them from time to time.

Roughy gets minimal delivery - far less than Fevola (most in AFL by a mile), Brown, Franklin, Bradshaw, Reiwoldt, Pavlich, Lloyd, Hall, Mooney, Cloke...

75 goals is a minor miracle. He is very smart and opportunistic for a big man. And geez he has a good pair of hands.

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

Tambling should be about pick 50 and WILL NOT EVER BE A MEDIOCRE PLAYER, HE HAS REACHED HIS FULL POTENTIAL!

See the problem is that everyone compares him to Buddy. Buddy is one of only two elite players in the league at this moment, Ablett is the other.

If you actually take a good look at the 2004 draft, it was very very weak.

Tambling has played well over 50 games and is turning out to be quite handy. His averages went up again for the 4th year running.

When you compare him to others from the draft, like Monfries, Rosa, Williams, Prismall and Le Cras, he's well ahead of them at the moment.

No he isn't.

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

He contributed half a goal less per game, otherwise seems to be pretty even or slightly ahead in every other area. More disposals, marks and tackles and every year his possie count has gone up by about 4.

There is incredible upside to Tambling.

He has potential matchwinning abilities and in all likelihood will be averaging 22-24 disposals next year, about 4 tackles a game and 1 goal per week.

Smithers had said that Tambling was well ahead of Monfries when obviously it is not the case. Currently Monfries has similar if not slightly better offensive impact despite the fact that he is being played as a defensive forward.

In that case you are right.

I would say Tambling would be quite ahead if you factored in potential though, and he would get picked everytime right now if the two were up for grabs. And that's nothing against Monfries, he has developed quite well and I do have respect for him.

It would be wrong to say Tambling is clearly better without showing respect for Monfries, Le Cras etc.

But Tambling has a freakish ability and he must have some kind of talent if he was rated ahead of Lance Franklin only a couple of years ago - talent like that doesn't just disappear (no matter how long they've been at Richmond!)

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

Cloke should be Top 5 in every single list, without doubt - He's won a Best and Fairest and "Best Finals Player" in a side that went to prelim.

Other than Buddy and Roughead, nobody on the list has acheived that much, and I'd argue he's ahead of Roughy - Let Cloke play next to Buddy Franklin and he'd kick that many goals too.

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

Tambling is developing into an A-grade midfielder...

Oh FFS get over Tambling, just because he's not AS GOOD AS BUDDY doesn't mean he isn't a very good player in his own right.
So you think it's unfair that, on what we've seen, Tambling isn't considered a "very good player"?

Your bias never ceases to amaze me.

Could also argue he'd struggle to kick 50 without Franklin taking the opposition's 2 best defenders + everyone else preparing to leave their man when Buddy comes near.

Roughead kicked 5 against Richmond earlier in the year because his defender was more worried about helping out against Buddy.

Does it get any easier for a forward?

Try and think of another forward in the comp who has it easier than Roughead.

Try.
That's just a rubbish argument. This is a 21yr genuine KPP, a power forward, who just kicked 75 goals playing at CHF in the premiership team. This done whilst, even by your own admission, at least probably 70% of forward entries were being directed through Buddy. You're prepared to talk up Tambling on the back of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING..."is a very good player"..."developing into an A-Grader":...yet a player like Roughy, who given his size and style of play could be forgiven for taking years to fully develop, you're at pains to talk down?

Try and show me another player who, with all things considered (age, position, 'type' of player, achievements-to-date etc), could've shown more promise and more reason for optimism.

Go on, try.

Try.

But Tambling has a freakish ability and he must have some kind of talent if he was rated ahead of Lance Franklin only a couple of years ago - talent like that doesn't just disappear (no matter how long they've been at Richmond!)

So what? History is littered with unfulfilled talents. At any rate, getting picked up early means nothing. Clubs get it wrong ALL THE TIME. Given your club's recent history, you of all people should realize that.

My top-20*

1. Franklin
2. Roughead
3. Deledio
4. Lewis
5. Cloke
6. Griffen
7. Egan
8. Williams
9. Pratt
10.Van Berlo
11. Knights
12. Monfries
13. Bate
14. Prismall
15. McGuane
16. Rosa
17. Murphy
18. J Smith
19. LeCras
20. Moore

*Subject to change. Whipped up in about 1.5 mins.

Re: 2004 Draft Re-Done

4. Ryan Griffen
5. Jordan Lewis

Agree with this. Cloke being an F/S isn't in there for me, but if he was available I would have him above Lewis, and put JL down to No. 6.

I Think we will see Tom Williams get to 7 very soon.

Yeah I pretty much agree with this.

Cloke would be a monster if he was next to a Buddy Franklin or Fevola.
