How the **** could you have Christensen so high yet Jetta so low? Also Talia is better than 11th placing!

Fyfe is awesome. Easily top 3. The eagles could have used Jetta at 7.

Thanks.

Well for the sake of your comparison, Melksham wouldn't be spending as much time purely on the ball as Cunnington, and would therefore be expected to have lower disposal counts. How much lower, though, I couldn't say.

Dont be silly.

Melksham is a fair way behind Bastinac.

There is a reason why Melksham has a lowish disposal count - ENDURANCE - He can't get to enough contests.

I reckon we did pretty poorly in this draft.

Scully: OK, so we all know the story here, but I think pure talent wise he is one of the worst number 1 picks in the past say 10 years. Early on when he was racking up good numbers I thought the sky was the limit with him once he tidied up the kicking and bulked up. As it turns out there appears to be a fundamental flaw with his disposal and he appears to be the kind of player that won't ever become shredded and imposing build like pretty much all the league's best midfielders. Has good endurance and pace so will have some success and MAY still reach elite (as I've been wrong before), but I reckon if he re-signed with us at end of 2011 for big coin and churned out the kind of performances with us the knives would be out.Luckily we got handsome compensation so I eagerly await how we will stuff these picks up in a few months time.

Trengove: Had a horrible year, but 2010 and 2011 were good. He's already the captain and has a lot going for him but as others have said, he doesn't appear to have much WOW factor to him. Will definitely become a good player and I'm confident he can become a gun in the Bartel mould but I would have preferred an out and out gamebreaker with this pick. I would say Trengove was a good pick at 2 but would take Martin if we had our time again.

Gysberts: Had a massive fall from grace, unfairly so, but there were better players at this pick.

Tapscott: was pumped about this pick, but he's making slow progress. Imposing and skilled but something just isn't clicking.

Looking at our picks the stinging thing is more the players that we could have had rather than the ability of the players we did pick. After stuffing up 2007 and 2008 it would have been nice to nail this draft good and proper but that appears to not be the case. I'd give us a D+ or C but things in footy change very quickly.

Cheers.:thumbsu:

On that basis, the comparative stats appear to be somewhat damning against my boy, though not calamitous. Will be interesting to track the two in future seasons.
I don't think it's unfair to say Cunnington was pretty darned average in his first 2 & 1/2 seasons - played a bit back, a bit forward, a bit midfield as well. Improved drastically after he got dropped - whether he needed to freshen up or whether he needed the kick in the arse, who knows, but he's playing properly good football now.

Melksham is a little bit behind him now. But was probably ahead for the first 2 1/2 years. I'm not massively worried about him; but then again I've never been massively excited by him either. He can play, physically he's nowhere near it yet.

Maybe that is what Melksham needed was a run in the two's. I saw a good post on your board to drop him for the last game against the Pies to get the fire in the belly to work hard in the off season. Goldy, Belly and Cunners are all good examples of what a stint in the two's can do for form and confidence. It still has a stigma attached to it but if you get a positive response it is well worth it.

Probably a combination of both those factors plus a third: he's playing in his natural position. With Ziebell out he could play Ziebell's role rather than being forced into the backline and forwardline.

Tend to agree with you. Will be good to see them both next year and who develops better/faster.

There were certainly a few advocates of this approach, myself included. It's all a bit too precious, these days.

Spot on. He's not a guy you see involved more than once in the same play. Sometimes not even that.

This is a redo "draft". So i am looking to the future who i think will be the best, not based on what they have done so far as a draft you are looking for a player for the next 8-10 years especially with top 10-15 picks.

For me Christensen is going to be the 3rd best from this draft. I question Jettas ability against a tag and to play well when the games on the line. Talia is a hard one to place as is all KPPs im just not a big fan of key defenders. Hawthorn for sometime now have shown that you can go without. He also doesnt do enough offensivily for me (already said).

Fair enough

As a Port supporter, this draft could turn out a major bust for us, or alternatively could still prove to be a boom.

Butcher, Moore and Pittard all taken in the top 16. Each player has been heavily restricted in their first 3 years because of recurrent and chronic injury problems. The snippets of each have been promising, but when do you start writing players off altogether?

Well, look no further than Gumbleton. Played less than 30 matches in 5 or 6 years 'in the system' due to chronic injury, but has been a solid contributor in 6-odd consecutive games this year. Each club can probably afford a project-player or two - especially if they were taken high in the draft - but it would depend on output, nature of injury, potential, likelihood to reach potential and the development or otherwise of other players in similar positions.

You can probably afford to have a bit more patience, but without any persisting injuries, you would expect some output in 2013. It is not advantageous to have these players subjected to another coaching change, either.

you are right about a stint in the 2s, remember a couple of years back St Kilda done it to Dal santo, difference is though I just can't see anything special in Melksham's game.
some players are just not up to it, so all we can do is hope he is a late developer.

Melksham is going to be a long term player - what remains to be seen is HOW good he'll be.

I reckon he'll definitely be a 100 gamer, Essendon would want him to play 200+.

Gunston should be higher on people's lists. He showed a bit of the Crows and has gone on with at the Hawks, even when Buddy's missing.

Has to be top 10 ...

My list:
1.Fyfe
2.Martin
3.Gunston
4.Reid
5.Crameri
6.Talia
7.Jetta
8.Menzel
9.Duncan
10.Carlisle

Could have included Ball and Pods, but with only a few years of service I went with younger options.

BTW the reason I pick Martin is I think he is going to play more games, Fyfe is injury prone.

Martin has delivered in spades right out of the gate. A weapon.
Fyfe a freak and steal at #20 - still could be anything.
Scully has underwhelmed for all the pre-draft talk.
Reid a huge steal.
Duncan I really like. Not TOP top echelon, but just a solid, classy, tough footballer, quietly getting better and better at the Cats. Looks a great pick at #9.

I think Jack Trengrove has been a disappointment, For A guy with 2 solid seasons in him and playing at a club with the lowest talent around him you would expect a guy like trengrove to stand out, and offer the demon fans hope,

Trengrove Will Never Be Elite As he has no speed...

Maybe Trengove has more of a Lenny Hayes lack of speed...

What is holding Trengove back at the moment is
a) not getting enough of the ball
b) the soul-crushing weight of the captaincy amidst a crap season with the senior players not leading.

He'll be fine.

I think fitness and playing for Melbourne would be the reason Trengove hasnt started aswell as others yet who were taken behind him in the draft. Also that he is the captain of the club and carries alot of pressure and expectations.

He doesnt have a Cotchin, Deledio, Jackson, Grigg, Foley or a Barlow, Mundy,Hill taking away the focus on him. Pretty sure he played through adversity this year aswell.
