I'll die on the hill his peak was better than the other two big names in this draft but unfortunately, Fyfey's injuries and games played hold him back. **** he was incredible in those 2013 to 2019 years

If Fyfe had played for a Victorian club, he’d be treated like a literal god instead of just another interstate star

Dusty’s peak was the 2017 season which Leigh Mathews’s labelled the best season ever. The damage he could do on the scoreboard plus through the middle sets him above Fyfe in my opinion.

I actually agree and I'm a Freo fan. Fyfe was a joy to watch and has given me so much pleasure as a pure fan of the game with his aerial ability and freakish athleticism but Martin was a stone killer in high pressure matches. You don't win 3 Norms if you're not.

I think the difference is mental. Fyfe is a deep thinker and emotionally a bit over sensitive> He thought about the game too much and felt it too deeply to his detriment (terrible yips ever since missing 2 regulation shots at the start of the 2013 GF. He never got over that).

Martin I suspect is a bit more cynical about the game and life in general. He could play it stone cold.
I'd rather watch Fyfe but I'm picking Martin to win a GF for me.

If you flipped a coin on draft day I don’t think you come out disappointed.

Was Talia better than Grimes?

Pretty hard to split IMO - both guns, both underrated.

Talia was a multiple All Australian full back. He won a best and fairest, was good from early in his career (won the Rising Star in 2012) and had a pretty sustained peak (still AA squad in 2019). For a period there, was the 2nd best key defender (behind Rance) in the league.

Grimes was more the medium back that could play on tall or small equally well. He made the AA team once (could have been more IMO), the squad twice more and also won a best and fairest. Was an underrated key part of a very successful side.

I think most lean slightly to Talia because true KPP players tend to be harder to find and his absolute peak ('14-'16) may have been slightly higher. Grimes is underrated and an absolute gun though.

Jack Gunston's late career rennaissaince puts himself in a weird position relflecting on this draft IMO.

That is, he's never going to touch the top 3 - (Martin, Gawn, Fyfe) who are all "all-timers" that will end up with Legend status.

At the same time, I think he's now well clear of 5th from this draft (probably Talia but could be Grimes, Cunnington or Duncan).

He has now made the All Australian squad 6 times. He's won multiple best and fairests, multiple AA's and finished top 3 in the Coleman multiple times. He will end his career with over 600 goals (and over 200 assists), at least 5 seasons of 50+ goals and is a big game performer (averages 3+ goals in Grand Finals, having top scored in 2 of them).

Fair.

Grimes played his best footy after Rance (and Astbury) retired prematurely and he had to step up, and he did it unbelievable well, especially as he was a touch undersized.

Martin is a better kick and overall player, Fyfe better at winning the ball as an inside mid though.

Yeah the top three are clear cut, the Gunston is clearly 4th

The top 3 have the following between them

15 AA's (potentially 16 coming)
3 brownlows
2 AFLCA awards
3 MVP's
3 Norm Smiths

Not too bad

Fyfe was also better in the air. He could mark like a very good key forward even after he got his shoulder recons.

That 2015 year till Mitchel kneed him around rd 14 was so special. He could barely be tackled and it was like watching a gun 18 year old play in an under 14's game.

Dusty still gets him for his longevity and flag influence. Fyfe peak was better in my opinion though although had less cattle and more opposition around when Freo were challenging. Injuries really hampered him.

Fyfe lead the league in contested marks one of his peak years. That's pretty crazy for a midfielder.

If Fyfe was a more accurate goal kicker he would have almost been the absolute prototype unbeatable player with no real weakness

1. Martin
2. Fyfe
3. Gawn
4. Gunston
5. Duncan
6. Grimes
7. Talia
8. Tuohy
9. Cunnington

In what order do people rate Carlisle, Astbury and Reid?

Throw Shep in there I reckon.
