You never know? He might stay a 15-20 poss 1.5-2 goal a game player. Or he might become a 30+1 player or maybe he becomes a freak 30+1.5-2 player. I'm just saying players don't always follow a standard trajectory.

Made the AA squad last year and was the 2nd ranked player in the AFL before he got injured this season...

By whose metric was he the 2nd ranked player in the AFL after round 4?

He averaged 21 disposals, 1 goal, 103 ranking points a game.

Which is funnily enough a similar enough stat line to Thomas' in 3 x the sample size this year.

Any player can stagnate. No player in this group has the sample size (other than Walsh) to confidently state they can't, including Butters. Butters has had 7 x 20+ disposal games vs Thomas' 5 (4 in the last 6 games) in their 40-50 games so far.

GAJ was also averaging disposal no.s in the 30s...

TT is tracking very nicely and kicking a lot of goals but he shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as GAJ.

17 disposals vs 30+ is a world of difference.
North fans really overrating a bloke who hasnt done a lot yet. We get it hes talented and we all agree on that but his perfomances at the same age compared to some of the greats he has been confirmed to in the last 3 days on BF dont stack up at all

He's literally the 2nd ranked u/21 in the comp according to AFL player ratings behind Walsh.

When can we have permission to discuss him then? You realise you are in the 2018 draft thread?

Was more the comparison to GAJ etc not the overall discussion on Thomas

Jesus, I discussed GAJ being a 1.5+ goal a game midfielder. The end.

I wasn't comparing a single element of their games in any way other than the amount of goals they both might kick.

They are quite clearly completely different footballers.

Happy?

He's done this though.

Who's speculating?

He's kicked the most goals in the comp for a midfielder in the last 12 games. He's only played 44 games, so it's about ~25% of his career to date.

People are happy to speculate on Zac Butters?

He's been labelled Ports best player in this thread and he averages 18 disposals a game in his 6 games this season....

Unless the 14 disposals a game for the previous two years are considered a body of work that doesn't include speculation as to his clearly high ceiling?

What are you talking about. Butters has already made the AA squad. That's not speculation, that's fact. Will Tarryn Thomas make the squad. No

He made the AA squad off of 14 disposals a game and 11 goals for the year. Is it some sort of marker as a body of work that can't be usurped? Mainly off the back of his high goal assists numbers.

Which why he bodes as such a damaging player moving forward.

FWIW.

I think when Sam Walsh will be AA, Butters has already made the squad last year and Tarryn Thomas unlikely to make the squad. So I think when he makes the squad then he can be compared to the others.

Omg, do you watch footy or just follow fantasy stats? You're so wrapped up in the stats movement that you can't see clearly. I'm glad the experts and selectors all agreed with me and he was selected in the squad.

The above isn't fantasy stats.

FWIW Butters ranking at the end of last season.

So shut this thread down until everyone else makes an AA squad position or higher?

He got in the squad. Thomas won't make the squad. How are you still arguing? Lol at you for trying to pull stats to justify why Butters isn't that good. Butters is one of the most skilled players in the league. He isn't an accumulator.

Please point me where I said Butters wasn’t good?

I was responding to someone who said we can’t judge Thomas yet because he might stagnate.

Asking for trouble not putting Thomas in the Top 10. North Pitchforks coming in 3...2...1...

"Achieved so far" is a fair point.

Recruiters don't pick players on what they've achieved so far though.

Well they kind of do. They tend to base it on what they've achieved at junior level and how they feel that will translate to AFL level.

We nearly have had 3 seasons to see how it has panned out. What they've done so far is a very good indicator of their ability. Some may get better, some may drop off, but that is still crystal ball stuff. Their body of work in the last 3 years is the single greatest indicator we have.
