Redundancy/Golden handshake

Ahh, redundancy - been there. I was at a big company straight out of uni and stayed for 9 years before I got the tap on the shoulder. At first, I panicked. You go through all the emotions: denial, despair... I genuinely thought I’d never get another job ever again and die unemployed . The idea of applying and interviewing was terrifying.

But honestly, it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. I was in my late 20s, and the payout more than doubled my house deposit. Before that, I could only afford an apartment, but now I own a house with around 33% equity. As a single first-home buyer, I feel pretty lucky - it wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

I bombed the first few interviews hard. But you quickly start to see the patterns in the questions they ask, and after a few rounds, you can answer them in your sleep.

Now, I’m not afraid of redundancy or job hunting anymore, it’s actually kind of empowering.

This is going to sound like a Monty Python sketch but I DREAM of being offered a redundancy. All you posters don't know how lucky you are. I've been in the mining industry for 20 years now. Not once has a redundancy been offered. Probably because the companies I worked for were doing well financially due in no small part to having me as an employee. Bastards!

Bulla Dairy layed off 33 workers yesterday, including my sister-in-law, a highly experienced and even more highky skilled food compliance specialist. Victoria such a wonderful place for business right now....not.
