Just a question, is conca at 20 better then shuey, selwood, gaff at 20? If the answer is yes, then we need to get him.

I checked this out before and it's actually about the same.

Here are a few players at 20 years and 11 months:

Conca: 42 games, 18 disposals, 4 marks, 2.6 tackes, 0.2 goals
Scooter: 43 games, 14.9 disposals, 3.4 marks, 3.5 tackles, 0.2 goals
Shuey: 15 games, 18.4 disposals, 2.9 marks, 3.7 tackles, 1.2 goals
Masten: 34 games, 18.3 disposals, 2.7 marks, 3.3 tackles, 0.2
Gaff: 52 games, 20.9 disposals, 4.3 marks, 1.3 tackles, 0.4 goals
Judd: 68 games, 18.4 disposals, 2.2 marks, 3.3 tackles, 1.1 goals

It's interesting that Shuey was on par with Judd at the same stage but, of course, he'd played far less football. Gaff has had a good start to his career too.

Anyway, I'd compare Conca most closely to Masten or Scooter in early output.

Billings and Bontempelli are 2 that IMO would offer better long term value to WC than Garlett and I could easily argue Acres and Dunstan would also.

Surely Dunstan wouldn't be available at our pick? Would be an ideal get.

Interesting.
I'm not sure about Billings for WC.
Yes, he provides us with a goal-kicking, strong marking mid (which we don't really have on our list ATM - excluding maybe Shuey when he's on) but this is not our most pressing need right now. Whilst reasonable inside it's not an absolute strength (like some others rated around him) and he doesn't seem to have the speed we require as a 2nd touch player.
Bontempelli, however, I'm liking the more I see of him.
Dunstan would be a fine compromise at approx. pick 10 between someone like Billings and someone like Crouch.

Callum Twomey did a mock draft of the first 20 picks, interestingly had sheed at 17....

Would be a case of clubs looking at athleticism over actually being able to play footy. Wouldn't put it past them. :p

1) a goal kicking strong marking mid is EXACTLY what WC needs
2) He has reasonable hands so inside he will be more than acceptable (dont forget Priddis and Selwood will be inside) & we'll wait till DC but having watched him a couple of times, I think his speed is OK. What is good is that as a running style he's not technically perfect now so with instruction his speed will increase dramatically.
3) Bontempelli reminds me a lot of Pendelbury its not funny despite him being likened to Birchall.

Able to shed any light on our favourites? Dunstan looks very, very good to me.

In the conversation I had with a certain person on Wed night - there was comments passed regarding numerous players. Sitting at Etihad, Bontempelli, Scharenberg, Billings, Lennon as well as Cripps all were impressive as was Marsh with his pure speed for a big boy.

Recruiters come away like a kid in a lolly shop - all excited - then reality sets in.

Just thinking out loud here but would an exchange of first round picks and a fringe player or our second round pick get it done?

If we fall to a pick in the 7-10 range would this be overpaying for Conca straight up?

Considering how many clubs beneath us are craving for KPP'S and this is looking like a midfielders draft it is very likely we may be lucky enough to have someone of real quality slip to us between 7-10.

However since there are so many midfielders, if we could pick up Conca and still have a pick later in the first that would be ideal.

I still don't think he will leave Richmond though.
That wouldn't get the trade done, at least I hope not!

From a Richmond supporter's perspective, Conca is absolute gold.

The vast majority of us rate him in the top two/three best of his draft year. We wouldn't bother with players like Brown or picks lower than first round. For a straight swap, we'd probably expect the quality of a Gaff/Darling because that's the same value we put on Conca.

That said, word is that he's really happy in Melbourne so I doubt this will go any further.
This is complete nonsense.

What's the general perception of the likes of Sheed and Dunstan then? Most on here have them top 8 but more 'esteemed' sources like the afl.com.au article posted seem to place them around the 15-20 range.

To you maybe, but I did say Richmond supporters. You probably have Gaff above him whilst we don't or at least most of us don't. Every team's supporters are biased towards their own players.
So you claim that the majority of Richmond supporters are not capable of even partial objectivity?

Heppell, Prestia, Bennell, Darling and Libretore have all been better, with Gaff similarly performed and the likes of Swallow, Howe and Dahlhaus not far behind.

I rate Conca (from well before he was drafted) and he has stepped up his game this year big time, yet was decidedly average and injury prone in his first two seasons.

To say he is in the best two players from the draft however is not bias, it is completely divorced from reality.
