Tom Nicholls from GC? 21, Ive watched GC a few times this year but cant remember seeing him out there. Seems to be going alright based just on hitouts.

Hoping Natanui gets a full season next year no injuries, hes primed to destroy. When you look at the best ruckmen Minson, Leunberger, Jacobs, Goldstein etc there either to old, limited talent, not much effect on games. Natanui is light years ahead in talent just needs to get more of the ball and have consistency

I think you're underestimating Lycett a bit.
Considering where he was last year, he is absolutely LIGHT years ahead of how he was this time last season.

From memory this season I've seen Lycett stiff arm an opponent then run away from them, he's also had bounces on multiple occasions. Don't see that often from young ruckman, and incredible given the lack of movement/flexibility he exhibited last year.

There is plenty of merit in retaining Lycett BUT to bastardise a phrase, "It's the midfield stupid..." (I'm not calling you stupid just coining a phrase!!)

I like Lycett, as do you, but IF he got us a genuine gun midfielder we'd have to look at it given that the midfield is absolutely key. The question is whether Conca is that guy.

If this was Lycett for O'Meara, Bennell or similar we pull the trigger right?

We have a star ruckman; a fading star back up for next year and we can always trade in for solid back ups to NN in future years ... if we had a suitably gifted midfield then I suspect it matters less ...

Of course that reignites the thought about NN... If GWS would break the bank for him given their previous statements, do we?

Keep Lycett and get our pick 6 plus say 1, 10 and say Coniglio for NN...

Would you do that?

I would really like us to get conca.Not sure about for gaff tho as we are trying to build a midfield and both of them would bring different and important qualities to our team.
for what its worth I think conca will have as good a career as gaff,possibly better

callum sinclair showed quite a bit in his few performances imo. he's a bit older so doesn't have the trade value or ceiling that lycett has.

The key with all of the trades mentioned.

Judd - wanted to go home, and said so
Kareem - asked to be traded
Wilt - notoriously difficult teammate/cancer
Gretzky - small market team traded him out for a kings ransom

Nic Nat doesn't come under any of those categories. If you can find an example of a team trading their best player without one of those factors above i'd be surprised.

Kevin Garnett.... Although arguably a small market team, they traded him to Boston for no small market reasons ....,

Shaq from Lakers ....

Paul Pierce & KG - this year

ALL those trades done to improve/rebuild the teams sending them out and in the first 2 cases they were superstars who still had some gas left in tank. Won titles.

I'm sure I could find heaps of other examples. Richard Seymour from the Pats to the Raiders for one...

That's 4 off the top of my head :)
 
So Conca hey... He's a required player in my opinion from Richmonds perspective. Can't see him leaving for $$$ unless it was ridiculous money and can't see west coast paying him ridiculous money.

Garnett wanted to go to a contender, and only went once they had Ray Ray locked up as well. Shaq was a Kobe or Shaq decision as there relationship had broken down.

PP and KG don't count as far too old. Richard Seymour isn't the equivalent of Nic Nat, Brady is.

Ian Downsborough, David Hynes, Chad Morrison & various others who have asked for a trade after being told by the club that it may be best if they did so ;)

Regardless, in an era of free agency you'd expect trades before contracts expire to become more common. The whole process of trades and free agency works poorly in Australia because of our comp being trapped between genuine professionalism and silly old notions tied to suburban comps. I'd expect that to change as the years go by.

By the way, I'm not advocating trading NN, I'm asking whether we'd do it for, say picks 1, 10 and Coniglio. That would give us Coniglio, 1, 6 & 10. I said it was essentially hypothetical and was just throwing it out there. Those choosing to instead debate the likelihood of a hypothetical are somewhat missing the point raised. Which is unfortunately standard BF practice at times ... :)

Agreeing to the said hypothetical trade is probably based on what side you come down on the question if whether WCE as currently constituted are top 4 material next year if we are injury free.

If you think we are then that trade sets us back in the near terms and closes the window for a couple of years.

If you think we aren't top 4 material then it's much easier to agree to the trade as you don't see us having an open window anyway so a couple of years wait won't matter.

A. Bullshit re Garnett. He didnt want to go and had to be pushed to sign. I'm happy to debate NBA & the Celtics in particular with anyone. Your assertion that he pushed for a trade is bollocks, he wanted to be a one team player until the team made it clear they wanted to move him, then he had to agree on the destination and that required Boston to be a genuine contender which happened once they got Allen.

B. it was a trade based on the best option for the team going forward. They traded a superstar and he hasn't wanted to go. That was what the poster was asking for examples of.

C. Agreed, to an extent, threw them in late. Regardless they are stars who went because it was what the team wanted. They were traded.

D. NN is Brady? **** off. Brady is in the argument for best QB of all time. NN is a fair way off anything like that at this point. Also showing your complete ignorance of Richard Seymour.

Team Captain, 7 time pro-bowl including twice AFTER he was traded (I.e. traded in his prime), was named to the starting team for the NFL's all-decade team (alongside Warren Sapp as DT), 3 times SuperBowl champion, Patriots greatest team of the last 50 years etc etc ....

That shits all over NN and frankly makes him one of the all time best in his position and he was traded as a team captain and aged 28 or 29 in a hugely controversial trade.

But yes, he's shit.

We have potentially a Top 4 team but our midfield lacks elite class and depth. As such we won't win anything with this group.

So we need to take decisive action or risk being a solid 4th to 8th team when fit for the next few years with a drop to 10th or worse with injuries. The cupboard is lean for those 20 or under that will leap into the team in next couple of years.

We need to do something.

I'd get RE to put some names in but if we added Coniglio, Aish, Sheed and another (10th pick) mid would we be better in 2015 and beyond than if we kept NN and just added, say, Sheed?

That's the question for me in considering it? And yes, I'm aware that there are broader issues about loyalty, culture etc etc ...
