His clearance work in the last combined with Fyfes was enormous. He provides a greater balance for us around the ball which is important. Doesn't shirk a contest and will halve them or win them. Plays within his limitations and gets the ball moving forward. I think the new 6-6-6 rule is to his advantage as a forward ball from clearance isn't automatically swept out by the +1.

If we can keep him inury free he should be a very good player for us for the next 7 years.

7 Years??
He is 26 Years old.
I'd be happy with 5 years !! He's been tremendous

Yeah I misread his age - having said that he should be a solid team member until early thirties... He doesn't rely on pace. 5 Years would be great.

He would be competing with Switkowski as the defensive forward. We aren't using a tagger (but he is actually an awesome tagger). And our forward line could use his leadership.
Conca isn’t quick in that role though. I wouldn’t change anything for Reece. He’s going superbly inside there. So underrated now he has found his role.
Big outspoken person about Conca. Didn’t like him in the back line. But now he’s just a tough nut and composed. Really liking his game. Him and Brayshaw are so crucial defensively, their body work and nous is a huge reason why Walters and Fyfe are doing what they’re doing

I may be missing something here. I think I was talking about who deBoer would replace if we'd kept him.

Legitimate question, are we better off not playing Reece Conca? I like what he’s done since being at Freo, but is there a walk up position for him or has he moved out of our best 22 into the 25-30 range.
SHill has come back & nailed down his role defensively & should we play Serong, Cerra, Valente & Blakely ahead of him on the ball.
I think they will play him when fit, but should they?

I think when he's back he'd be a walk on start for a bit simply because he provides a huge on field leadership presence but he'd slowly be phased out.

All fit and available and there will be some jostling for positions. He is moving towards not being automatic best 22 as others develop, but I think he stays for now.

Probably has to re-define his role next year again to stay in the side but he’s a reasonably handy player regardless and worth his spot in the side. If we have better players so be it - we’d be going really well imo to leave him out consistently.

Phased out perfectly from a club POV. May be a bit brutal but thats footy.

I must say when i clicked on this thread it took me to the first page. Looking back at some of the posts were mentioning how important he was going to be in the finals. 2 and half years later we still might not get there and reece is gone

Love Reece but I understand the clubs decision.

I hope this gives pause to people who cite loyalty as a reason for players to re-sign. Their careers can be over at the drop of a hat.

Players absolutely should make decisions based on their personal circumstances. I'm sure Reece did when signing with Fremantle and it hasn't worked out for him long term.

Seems to have had a positive influence on the club in the short time he was here.

Not sure it’s a great look luring a free agent in then cutting them so soon.

A victim of the coaching changes?

Tbh it’s a decent bit of business for the club imo.

- Give up nothing.
- Two and a half seasons of best 22 footy.
- Leadership.

Not everyone has to be here a long time to be a success. Conca certainly wasn’t a failure.

Yep, he’s been great for Freo, and we game him a 3 year contract and honoured it.

hopefully we see him in a coaching or mentoring role somewhere in footy circles in the future.

Good luck Reece :thumbsu:

At the end of his 3 year contract. 3 years is a long time in footy. Especially when you start getting close to 30 in the end. He was no gifted superstar, but more a hard worker. To hard worker it happens even faster. DeBoer was gone as quickly as well.
